BEGINNERS! Set up a perfect, trouble free fish tank with Father Fish

Father Fish is the Master of the perfect aquarium for new fish keepers'
This simple but sophisticated aquarium will thrill you with its beauty. You will be able to grow plants and keep your fish healthy and happy..
A Little Planted Tank for Kim
We are donating this pretty little 10 gallon planted tank to Kim, an invalid in a Venice, Florida assisted living facility. She remains in lockdown in her room with no visitors. She called us yesterday asking for us to sell her a small aquarium. We decided to gift this tank to her with help from our Fish Tube friends.
Part II is on hold until we get approval from the nursing home to set up the tank, WAITING....

@@corinnakl Ok. What I learned from Father Fish... is that gravel allows too much water flow, so the dirt nutrients get into the water. Also, the gravel collects lots of waste and food in the large spaces. Sand is very different. The nutrienys stay safely separated from the water column.. And all food is eaten, not rotting in the gravel gaps... Etc etc.. His video.. Dull Tank into Aquatic Wonderland converted my tank without tearing it down. The nitrates have gone wayyyy down. And I can now add ferts into the sand... and grow plants. My nitrates used to be too high to do root tabs. I am thrilled. My puffer tanks never kept plants alive, just Algae... Gravel, no dirt...

I recently discovered Father Fish. He puts together a natural aquarium in 10 mins, when I’ve spent hours just driving back and forth to pet stores trying to pick artificial stuff that will make my new aquarium “look natural”. Watching this is changing my way of thinking on it, so thank you! I also have a question…would it make a difference if I used a HOB filter instead of a sponge filter? I have an Aqua Clear 50 and 70 from other setups in the past. I also have a couple air pumps, so switching to a sponge filter wouldn’t cost much.

I didn't clarify myself enough.. I want to do a combined system in a 50 gallon tank, with a focus on maximizing bio-diversity. So I would like to use your method for a large percentage of the tank (75 - 80% of the bottom), which I will heavily plant. Then I want to have a smaller area that is a UGF, to give an environment for aerobic bacterial mattes. I wont ever touch or clean the UGF unless it gets totally blocked. If you look at streams and lakes (I grew up in Oregon), you ALWAYS find both plants and bacterial mattes in healthy ecosystems. I will seed the tank with microfauna from a clear water lake. Importantly, the UGF area (with gravel and a powerhead for flow and adjustable surface aeration), will be isolated from the soil. I'll probably put it in a casserol dish or something that will lay on the bottom of the tank, with the soil built up around it. I can also easily load the uptake tube with activated carbon, if my tank gets too full of tannins... Ultimately I want to have like a little gravel clearing, surrounded by well-planted sand beds. Lots of plants, and then some schools of nano- or small-sized fish, gradually adding fish and other critters like frogs and shrimp. Is it crazy enough to work?

Interesting! I always just dig the clay up from deep on my property I know it has no chemicals etc and it grows just about anything once it's broken up. I just use that and sand or fine gravel on top but never added anything else. It has worked well so far especially in the shrimp tanks. I never water change it or do anything its only 5 gallons and I breed thousands of shrimp out of it and plants.

  • @FatherFish

Clay is nature's mineral deposit. A good way to mix it with a looser soil base is to liquify it and pour into potting soil. That is a rich foundation for a sand capped substrate.

Hello Father Fish, I’ve been watching most of your videos on no water change aquariums and found it fascinating how well you explained the nitrogen cycle. I'm sorry for the long read, you’re one of the best practical explainer of the no water change phenomenon on youtube and "Jay's aquarium" is something like the best theoretical explainer. But surfing through forums on the internet I noticed a lot of people considering dirtied tanks to be harder to manage as it ca destabilize quickly if you don't know what you're doing, unforgiving in terms of replanting, messy. Clearly it’s not a beginners aquarium. But I absolutely love the concept of denitrification and the big nutrient battery that dirt is. For my first aquarium, I want to go with semi-inert substrate. Now, I’m a beginner, but willing to experiment a bunch but not take tank crashing risks, everything is new to me in the practical sense and would greatly appreciate if you would answer me to a few questions. 1. Sand is known to compact and hinder roots of plants, what is the smallest diameter of sand/gravel so that most aquatic plants can grow their roots normally? 2. Can the sand/gravel of the size you answered in my first question harbor denitrifying bacteria as well as fine sand ? Or does it need a thicker layer because of increased aerobic water flow ? 3. Can the output water of canister filters (presumably less oxygenated, mechanically filtered) at low flow through another canister with labyrinths, filled with ordinary canister media harbor significant nitrate eating bacteria ? Or it would be so inefficient that it’s simply not worth it ? 4. If it’s worth it, what kind of medium should I use to maximize efficiency aside laterite which I can’t find even if my life depended on it? A Dr. Novak basked filter. Hope my noob questions aren’t too much of a sore eye but I really need the opinion of an experienced aquarist. Best regards.

You are overthinking the process. Pour an inch of mud in the empty tank. Add 2" of dry sand above the mud. Carefully fill the tank not disturbing the substrate. Stop listening to naysayers. They are not helpful. Add plants and fish and enjoy the wonder of a natural aquarium. This IS a beginner's tank and is the very best way for a complete newbie to set up their first tank. It is not messy unless you make it messy. It is not difficuly unless you make it difficult. It is not a lot of work unless you make it a lot of work. Follow the simple directions I have outlined. If you can LEAVE IT ALONE you will be delighted. If you cannot let it be you will fail.

Good question !, now I'm not FF xD but in my opinion it doesn't matter if you cap with at least 1.9 to 2.3 inches of sand over your top soil as minimun. I have ofc a dirted tank kinda following hes step. i have much more Substrate as he said as minimun. keep in mind that can be why i dont have a problem having alot of Malaysian Trumpet Snail and Rabbit Snails and I have not run into any problem (Yet) let's see what FF says. I'm curious . Peace :)

I saw your fish and plants for sale on get gills. I was wondering wht you are feeding your pygmy sun fish? Also you are selling a 6 group of Florida fish. Is this okay to have a group of individual types of these or is this a group to order the 6 of each Florida natives and add onto this 6 group? Thanks! P.S. The listing is for NATIVE FLORIDA FISH FORMOSA, BLUE FIN KILLIE, SAILFIN MOLLY, FLORIDA FLAG FISH, GOLDEN TOP MINNOW Can a person order 6 of one of these individuals? I like these from wht research I've done. Says Florida Flag fish is somewhat aggressive...can't remember the others.... I am stocking a 7 gallon cold water tank with some of each of these: Pygmy Cory, Asian Stone Catfish, Otocinclus and a couple endlers. These are doing very well so I don't want to upset the apple cart but I'm so interested in the Florida ones in your listing. I am interested in the Pygmy Sun Fish too but I'd have to find out what you are feeding them. I had a small group with no luck as they would NOT eat any of the foods I gave them and I tried just about every type including frozen blood worms and other frozen. I would not want to feed live worms, etc. So these fish seem to me to need this...but can be found to eat non live food so that's why I'm asking what you feed yours. These fish will starve themselves rather than eat something they don't like so want the appropriate info re their current feeding. Thanks!!

@father Fish, I really want to hear your opinion. Q: Can I take all my fresh cut plants from my 92 gal and put them in the bottom of my aquarium (New), as well as green hair algae rolled together. It has the same size as a football. (Looks crazy) Flatten it out and throw a fine layer of HORNUM Fertilizer nozzle and throw top soil on top and close it with sand. ??) (all in all, my bottom layer will be 6 - 7 inches) I ask because it is an easy and cost free method for me. P.S. you are an old soul and I mean that in a loving way! You have what we call a big and loving heart. Orh yearh .. By the way! ...and pray that the tank won't be leaking afterwards....There are many, many companies around the world who have created fish tanks IN GENERAL: ANY fish tank no matter how big or small has not been manufactured to be carried with water or a tiny amount of substrate in it...Anyone doing that is doing it on their own risk. The manufacturing companies who create fish tanks state it clearly that any fish tank must be completely empty before moving it because THEY HAVE NOT BEEN DESIGNED TO BE MOVED!! Anyone who does it and disregards their policies will have no coverage and lose money.. (I hope I am wrong- but it appears that Father Fish would be more than happy to sell you a new fish tank...) People!! Do research!! You do not move a house nor a lived in fish tank.. .You move the ingredients of the house because you cannot move all tings inside the house with the house .Now a human house is solid, so you only move whats insidd or can be taken appart. USE COMMON SENSE- ERGO = you empty your fish tank completely before you move it..Even if it's is in the same room! A absolutely no brainer when it comes to common sense...You can get tanks suitable for traveling...................m
