• DIR EN GREY - MC + 羅刹国...
"Rasetsukoku", "Land of Rakshasa". I was about to sub the mode of Macabre performance when I stumbled across this absolute gem and just had to pick it. It's from the Arche「A Knot」Limited Extra live at Liquidroom.
This song contains a lot of buddhist terms and I could've replaced them with some adjectives they stand for, but I think taking a moment to look at what they mean adds so much to the song, and ultimately these are the words Kyo is singing, so I ended up keeping them.
Translation by me.
Annotations and explanations:
"The clairvoyant can't see [the demon]" - As in "can't predict".
"In a double ring pattern [the nightly procession of demons occurs]" - This double ring pattern is like a bull's eye, usually it's found on parasols. If you google 蛇の目 images will pop up.
"Nature" - Referring to biological sex.
"Filthy and wickedly they laugh" - This line has kanji that are only used for their sound. Basically it says "They laugh keserakerakera". Imagine their laughter sounding like that. I did derive the adjectives I picked from the kanji, but I still think they are actually only there for the sound.
"Without breaking down the pre-established harmony" - Might refer to Gottfried Leibniz's theory of pre-established harmony.
"They treat my life as repulsive" - This is a translation in context. The lyrics only say "My life - repulsively".
"The world of the living is the land of Asura" - This could also simply be "this world". I believe the world of the living is meant here because there's actually something often said about Asura: The modern world is that of Asura because humans are always in a haste, chasing after material things that they end up being unable to reach.
But let's finally get to what the buddhist terms used in this song actually are:
Asura:
Ashura/Shura in Japanese. Kyo uses "Shura" in this song.
The buddhist demigod (sometimes anti-god) of war. Also used to refer to people that fight an endless war against something in their lives. The world of Asura is governed by anger and pain. The state of being an Asura (e.g. being reborn as one) stands for the mental state of being obsessed with ego and violence.
Rakshasa:
Rasetsu in Japanese. Buddhist demons that made humanity their enemy.
Sometimes Asura and Rakshasa are used interchangeably. Rakshasas are also called "maneaters". In many depictions they eat humans or drink their blood.
Thank you for watching and also for reading!

I do not own Dir En Grey or any of their music or performances.
I translate for fun and wanted to share this translation.

Since this is the last encore, Kyo had shed the elaborate stuff. They start out fully clothed and then change their outfits to more casual for the encore.

@@omr4745 Well, I might have seen a show or two... 😏 But also, it's a thing within this Japanese scene. All the bands have stage costumes, and then most or all band members switch to concert tees for the first encore. Selling merch is a huuuuge thing in Japan and it helps sales to promote the gear. Also, fresh clothes for the encore sounds like a nice thing for the band. 😆

I absolutely love your Dir en Grey reactions 😍 I myself have been listening to Dir en Grey for 17 years now and I love the fact you enjoy and appreciate everything you gyus have reacted to so far, and you still want more songs 👏😊 (and I love your reactions) What I think would be awesome if you guys do album reactions. Then you can discover your own favorite songs. They have some crazy stuff from their earlier works that you haven't reacted to yet. Hope you continue with your Dir en Grey journey

Moshing exists in Japan (tons of bands have them at their shows), but in the case of DIR EN GREY, they've banned it (along with crowd surfing) from their concerts since 2003, after some fans were injured. Since it's nearly impossible to enforce a "mosh ban" at a metal concert in the west, they tolerate it when they perform overseas. However, it's still completely banned at their shows in Japan.

I've seen mosh pits with other Japanese bands in the US. But when I saw Dir en Grey, we were all packed together like sardines. I was in the front and was pushed forward so hard I was lifted off the ground, which honestly helped cause I'm short. Some people around me passed out standing up from the heat. Our venue was smaller, so that's probably why there wasn't any.

I believe I just lost my neck..🤣 And, yes, I would riot if Kyo told me to, hahah I've had the experience of hearing/seeing this song performed live, and it's exactly like that, lemme tell you. Fans of Dir really are so loyal and they just know when to interact and when not. Also, I think moshing isn't allowed in Japan, if I remember correctly 🤔

It depends on the band. Crossfaith and SiM definitely have it and when I saw Lynch open for crossfaith there were circle pits there too. Its usually vkei bands or vkei influenced bands that dont do it much because of how the majority of the crowd is usually women. I did see a crowd surfer at a Gazette show though

I love when they play small venues like this. They usually do when they tour the states. It’s a lot less theatrics and more personal. When Kyo isn’t dressed like a demon or a nun or a mime and it’s just him in a pair of jeans and a microphone he has a really cool connection to the crowd. You can tell he loves his fans

I know I've said it before but every concert should end with Rasetsukoku! (Regardless if it's Dir en grey or not.) If you ever experienced this live you know what I mean. In Japan it's pretty normal for a band to leave the stage and then come back for an encore of 3-4 songs. So you've been going hard for 1h+ straight before that break and while you're waiting for the band to return your body starts to feel the exhaustion. But then they come back and really take EVERYTHING from you. hydra 666, The IIID Empire and Rasetsukoku make for the most insane encore! The standing venues in Japan have place limitations (I'm sorry I don't know the right term in English) to prevent people from killing each other by relentlessly pushing forward so that makes mosh pits a bit tricky. Larger venues like the Budokan have seats. So you really have to be huge enough to play arenas to get people moshing, or participate in festivals. edit: Well...I added a picture of the empty ZEPP Tokyo to my comment because my describtion is rubbish. But it seems KZread is all for allowing shady porn links but no links to japanese news sites so...just search for pictures if you want to know what I'm talking about. Of course every hall has a different concept regarding where and how to place these barriers but most of the venues for 1000-5000 people have them. They CAN be taken down but I have never experienced it personally. I think they do it more often with foreign bands.

I've seen a few Dir concerts already, even in Japan, and I never knew how far I could push myself after all those intense performances, but when they came back for encore etc.. Ppfftt.. Those concerts leave me dead even after recovering for 2 days, hahah ALSO, I've seen them when they OPENED with Rasetsukoku.. 😆 John, that imitation was awesome!! Wonderful reaction once again~ Thank you Liberty! I think this one is my favorite version of Rasetsukoku to watch. It was filmed at LIQUIDROOM 2006 and Kyo ususally doesn't go into the crowd like this - but this was a 'a knot' only concert [fanclub members only]. From what I've seen these concerts always seem a bit more intimite :) The song itself comes from their second album macabre [same album that 'wake' and the original 'macabre' are from] I think this might be one of their most played songs from their earlier albums and I think you can see and hear why 😄 From the comments it seems like people had awesome live experiences with this - I hope I get to hear it live some day, too~

@@happycapy47 I Agree DIR En Grey's Show-Menship is Radical only a few of the VK legends today have that intensity! But for me the INSULATED WORLD was a step back into Kisou album with a modern day sound. their was some tunes like "Values of madness" that could have been on ARCHE But it it was mostly an album of Alternative Power Ballads to me... And I know they've always used synthetics and synthesizers. But they've been Heavy on the electronics especially in their newest single "Ochita Koto no Aru Sora" were it overpowers the song competely. However I have full respect for "The World of Mercy" it's another "Diablo" in my opinion.

@@libertyluna1383 Yes of Course DIR En Grey does multiple Vers. of their songs. Studio wise and of course when performing they alter their songs for theatrics, and performance sake! But this is the type of performance that makes people look down on DEG. I know how sensitive Vocals are and that Kyo's vocal change ups take alot of talent and effort. But when you Can't pull off what you recored Live it's just a show of problems with a band or straight up Fake-age. It's never been a secret Kyo has blown out his vocals over the years and has taken years to master his vocal change ups. There a Major Difference in recording & performing different versions of songs & not performing an original song correct live... TRUTH.
