Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101: How to Eat Taiwanese Soup Dumplings!

Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101, read my blog post: migrationology.com/2015/08/din...
One of the most famous restaurant in all of Taipei is Din Tai Fun, a restaurant that’s become famous and even synonymous for serving soup dumplings known as xiao long bao. The original location of Din Tai Fung, located on Xinyi street is only one of the many locations now around Taipei and even around the world. But since we were already visiting the Taipei 101, we decided to skip the original location and eat at the Din Tai Fung Taipei 101 branch for lunch one day.
One of the best things about the restaurant is the service and the branding - it almost runs like a fast food restaurant - the system works so well, yet of course they serve much higher quality food. We arrived to the restaurant at about 11 am and luckily that was early enough to beat the main Taipei lunch rush. We got situated down, and made our order. The dumplings are all handmade inside the restaurant, and as soon as you enter you’ll notice a small army of white dressed dumpling makers who look like they work at a hospital, but in fact they are making world class dumplings - all by hand.
The Din Tai Fung menu includes quite a few different things, but really the only reason everyone goes there is mainly to eat soup dumplings, the xiao long bao - everything else on the menu is sort of secondary, though it’s nice to have a variety of different foods on the table. But let’s start with the xiao long bao soup dumplings. What I really enjoyed about the xiao long bao at Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101 is that they were very delicate. The wrapper wasn’t too thick, but it was just nice and thin and the pork mixture inside was delicate and flavorful, but not overly salty like it can sometimes be. In order to eat xiao long bao, there was a handy instructions card on the table at the restaurant. The first step was to add some soy sauce and vinegar to your dipping bowl, then dip a dumpling into the sauce and top with ginger, then put your dumpling in your spoon and poke a hole in the wrapper to release all the soup juice, and then eat it all in one bite. The instructions worked well and I successfully enjoy all the xiao long bao.
Along with the soup dumplings another dish I tried was the minced pork topped noodles which came with a pile of hand-made noodles on the bottom with a minced pork and Chinese sausage mixture on the top. It was a little on the plain side, but it was pretty good. We also ordered a few other side dishes like pickled cucumber and the Din Tai Fung salad, all of which were good, but nothing compared to the xiao long bao.
Again, there are a number of location of Din Tai Fung around Taipei, and the Taipei 101 branch is a really nice restaurant. It’s clean, the service is really good, and it’s all about those soup dumplings.

I discovered Din Tai Fung in Singapore, it is now my go to place for noodles and dumplings. Alas, we - family and I - were scheduled to go there for a week in early June. Corona virus has forced a change in plans. No noodles. No xiao long bao! My favorite noodle - their minced pork with chinese shitake mushrooms. That is worth flying the 10,000 miles to Singapore to eat.

i ADORE Shao Rong Bao--they are my second favourite Yum Cha! My favourite is the kind that is fried on the bottom, but steamed on the top and served with sesame seeds and minced scallions on top. I adore them. Fun Goh and prawn balls encased in toasted almonds are my next favourites, followed by chicken feet in black bean sauce. As you can tell, I eat yum cha everywhere I travel to or live--bangkok, taiwan, hong kong, san francisco, tokyo, san diego, new york, etc.

Hey, Mark, love your channel! Do you typically sample the first dumpling without condiment to make a true judgment of the dumpling's quality? I just had some of these last night at the best dumpling place in Atlanta, and the soup was this perfectly rich, flavorful broth, and the dumpling proper was perfectly balanced and complex. I tried the next one with the delicious dipping sauce they serve with them, but it just threw the flavor profile and overpowered it with strong flavors. I ate the rest of them without sauce. How tasty were your soup dumplings without sauce? Keep up the great work!

The nearest soup dumpling restaurant to me is about a half hour away, so it is a special experience when I get to eat them. Thankfully, my birthday is on Sept. 3rd, so I know where I'm going to eat my birthday dinner. :) Thanks for sharing your experience! They look amazing!!

actually what the soup is actually made of is that they freeze the soup before hand and so they mix in the frozen soup with the meat and when they steam it, that's where the soup comes from... so in a way there is some pork juices but mainly is frozen soup

Amazing! Miss eating this in China! I had the opportunity to dine at Din Tai Fung in Shanghai and Irvine, CA. Think in China had more selections than US. Will have to go back to Shanghai once they raise travel restrictions perhaps in 2022! 😉

I am actually for the rugged not so westernized lifestyle. I could handle a poorer country and live frugal. All I need is pretty ladies, good food and a internet connection... I could live in just about any small place.

Hello Mark and Ying. As always, a great video. I'm a big fan of noodles and dumplings. I love it when the dough for the dumplings is very thin. And the filling juicy, large and full of flavor. I know you are less often outside Asia. but you should once again be in the USA and you're in New York, or Los Angeles! And you're hungry on noodles and dumplings. Then you should definitely try these places. For me, New York is the best place for China and Asia food outside Asian countries. , The Asians have retained much of their genuine cuisine in NY. You can even find authentic cuisine. Here's where you'll find many many delicious different food places in one place. New World Mall 136-20 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing, NY 11354 Best Hui Mian or Che Mian Noodles I ever had. Uncle Zhou 83-29 Broadway, Dongan Avenue, Elmhurst NY 11373 Best soup Dumplings outside China, Southeast Asien Kung Fu Xiao Long Bao, 59-16 Main St, Flushing, NY 11355 Queensborough Hill, Flushing If you're in Los Angeles go to Din Tai Fung 1108 S Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007 keep it up, and best regards Joschi

You're making me want to go back to asia SO BADLY!!!!! Los Angeles has a pretty solid Asian food scene, but it can't touch this by a long shot. I did a video about the food scene here in DTLA and the food was good, but I can tell from the looks of those dumplings, they were better :)
