Dimebag Tone Tutorial - MXR 6 Band / Furman PQ-4 / MXR Flanger/Doubler

Музыка

Probably the most important and beneficial tools that have aided me over the years when it comes to tone are my own ears! I'm no sound engineer though and I've still got LOTS to learn, so you'll have to forgive my recording/mixing skills, but I've done my best to give you an accurate as possible example of Dime's tone and how I usually would go about dialing it all in! I really hope you learn something from this video!

    Well it's finally here, after countless hours of planning and editing(probably days actually). I really hope you all can get through my nervous monotone voice and numerous jump-cuts, this is my first video talking, and it felt WEIRD! It's also the first time I've edited a video of this magnitude! So apologies for my amatuerish editing skills. If there's anything you would like to ask, and if you also have any ideas for future videos that you'd like to see me attempt, then definitely let me know and I'll try to do anything that I think I'm capable of!

    One of the best Dimebag tones on YT, maybe the best. Attention has been paid to every small detail of his modest rig. I know you're not the only one on YT with an MXR 6 band, Flanger/Doubler, Randall amp and cab or Furman EQ but one of the most important parts of his tone is getting the riffs right. The second one who played Dime's riffs right was Ola Englund, I will choose Attila Voros as the third guy. Great job.

    ha thanks! But it was more to say that everyone's perception of sound is going to be different, and each piece of gear might have a slightly different character despite being the same model name, so if everyone dialed in the EXACT same settings, it might not always come out the same. Basically trusting your own ears and having a play will do wonders for understanding the equipment better and getting a better final result :)

    Ha no worries! and thanks, I'm really happy that I was clearly understood, one main thing to remember, is that the same gear can actually sound different, especially when it comes to amps, so I think that's one thing most people don't take into consideration when hooking all this shit up! Thanks for being the first to make a request also! By Dime-"era" gear reviews, do you mean review this gear seperately with other guitars, equipment, and tones maybe? Because that's definitely a good idea!

    I wish I could share a pic of mine! What it was intended for was to sit on top of TV's and Everytime you changed a channel they would comment on what you were watching. There's a little censor on the front that will pick up any remote. Put some fresh batteries and it's a sweet and funny nod to my favorite era. (And one that catered to our favorite Texas 4 piece) Cheers, dude!

    A doubler is intended for stereo, not mono. This is where you will notice a very wide and thick or panned doubler effect. Adding in some detune to the one signal will emulate two guitars even further. The mimiq doubler by tc electronic provides the same effect and allows you to select the number of dubs.

  • @DomicidalCovers

    @DomicidalCovers

    8 ай бұрын

    Correct! I learned this VERY shortly after making this video unfortunately. If by "detune" you mean delay then yes, Dime used to run 2 or 3 amps live, I'm guessing 1 for clean, and 2 for gain. 1 Was dry with no doubler, and the other wet with the doubler engaged to delay the signal by about 10-20ms apparently, just short enough to fatten the sound. If I ever buy another amp then you can bet I'll be trying this out and making another video on it👍

Also like I said at the start, I didn't change or alter the EQ in post, just added a compressor to sort out the low-end. The only other thing that might be worth mentioning, is that all of the intro recording including solos were dual tracked.

    I’ve been trying to do a “dime” tone on my helix LT trying to substitute for specific gear with stuff they have and tweaking it till it sounds as close to the record as I can’t get. This is actually really helpful to me because on my “rig” if you will through the helix I do have a 6 band eq into a parametric (unknown brand) then into a wah (normally bypassed) and then into the amp which isn’t a Randall but it’s a solid state line 6 version of something ha, seems to sound the best from what I could go with for this, then into 2 4x12 v3 cabs have a 160 ribbon mic on the first cab and a 4080 ribbon on the second. First mic is like 2 inches off and the second mic is 11 inches off the cab. Where it gets confusing is they technically have it set up as a studio type so you have your loop which is on your normal signal chain and then into a 2A signal path would be if a producer added reverb delay etc into the tone. So In that I have everything in stereo which gave me an option for a double flanger which I’ve tweaked and then into a delay pedal I turn on and off mostly for dive bombs and then into a reverb pedal which is just for a little added hollow sound and then into another eq which is to just tweak any lose ends and then the chain ends in a studio LA compressor pedal to “glue” the tone together kind of like a producer would do. My issues are the parametric and the flanger. I’ve gotten actual settings for his 6 band from Grady...not directly but someone I know who got the pics directly. So your parametric settings are gonna help me tremendously! My dime is a Washburn 333 dimebolt nothing fancy but love it and it plays great! Has a dimebucker in it as well.

  • @DomicidalCovers

    @DomicidalCovers

    5 жыл бұрын

    Wow that's a lot of info there. At first I thought you literally had all this different equipment hooked up because I had no idea what the Helix even is until I googled it! About the parametric settings... I'm somewhat confused as to how my settings will help you if you already have pics of his actual settings? I'm glad to have been a help though if it does work! One thing I'll say though is that you have to keep in mind that every brand of eq and effects will have their own characteristics when dialed in, you may be able to dial in the same settings but it won't neccessarily give the same or even similar results, then you have to take into consideration how all his gear reacted together, because obviously plugging the same eq or boost or whatever into the front of one amp, won't give the same results as plugging it into a different amp, Sorry if this is all obvious to you. Flangers are definitely a tricky one for this, as the 126 is a rather special unit as most people know, and I don't really know too much about running rigs and/or effects in stereo, I do run my rack amps in stereo every now and then, but it's still new to me. I hope you can find something useable though with this rig, it sounds like it gives a lot of options to play around with!

    Thank you so much for the work you put into this! Amazing tone and playing. I think Dime would approve :D I have a couple of suggestions. For the people who have this gear, it would probably help to have a high res image of the rig (with all of the settings how you like) at the end of the video. I know you said the pq4 settings change throughout so maybe that would help clear it up. For the people who love this tone, but don't have access to all of the vintage gear, it would be cool for someone like you to chase the tone with modern versions of the rig and see how close you can get. Maybe (rg1003h ,new mxr 6 band, empress para eq)? I bet if you were able to get a similar tone with modern gear it would boost those product sales. Hell, you could probably get those companies to send them to you and test! Also, a tutorial on how to mimic Dime's finger style would be awesome! Love what you are doing man!

  • @DomicidalCovers

    You're welcome and thanks for the support! I can see what you mean, and I guess it probably would have helped to add another high res pic, but I wanted to help explain to people how I thought the rig worked aswell, and if I displayed one photo, then most people would have just skipped to that one photo and ignored the rest, Plus as long as you follow what I'm doing and look at the final result after I stop tweaking the PQ-4, you'll see that the settings will stay the same so it should be easy enough to copy down from there :) I really appreciate these suggestions because I noticed that most people are ending the video when I start talking at the end, which is when I actually asked for peoples opinions and requests, but I've only literally had a couple of requests so far. I would LOVE to do something like that, but mainly having the time and money to get this gear to test at the moment that's the problem :( If I can build the channel up then I'll have more chance of getting to test some gear out and I would definitely try to re-create this tone on a budget, but for now I'll have to take things slowly I'm afraid :/ I do however have Steel Panther's Pussy Melter pedal on the way for me to review and demo when it arrives ;) As for Dime's technique, that's another thing I actually might have planned for a future tutorial aswell, but It's something I would love to include in a series of other random lessons on playing if people are down with it! OR it could just be the perfect introduction to start a series of lessons! We will see.

    Thanks a lot for your time and efforts! As a devotee of the master myself, I really enjoy watching your covers, this tone is so sick! You are the only one on YT to achieve this ;-) I've got the Randall RG1503, 4x12 V30's, the deans, the mxr eq, but... I am nowhere near your perfection!!! Does the PQ-4 make a big difference in your sound ? The dobbler ? Keep the good work, I know it is appreciated among the true fans!

  • @DomicidalCovers

    Thank you! It's great that my efforts are appreciated! I actually think the 6-band is the main key factor to getting the actual tone(apart from the amp of course), the PQ4 just ads some more gain and then tightens it up a bit. If you can't find a PQ3 or PQ4 then I would suggest buying a similar parametric eq that also has a level boost to get you more gain, but try not to use anything that would colour the tone too much, just something that would give you more punch to compliment the 6-band, and then go from there.
