Digging In And Getting The Posts Set | Garden Fence Build (Part 1)
Ойын-сауық
It's the beginning of the end……the end being the final project of the year on our homestead! Though we faced tough challenges, we got the garden fence posts erected just in time before the ground starts to freeze. Stay tuned for the rest of the garden fence build!

Hi, we are Emily and Matt, and welcome to A Glimpse of Alaska! In September 2022, we (along with our puppy Aurora) made the nearly 5,000 mile drive from our home in Florida to our new home: Alaska. We created this channel to document and share our adventures in this wonderful state.
We appreciate each and every person who spent time out of their day to watch this video! If you enjoyed this video, please consider liking and subscribing to our channel. We will be continuing to document all of our Alaskan adventures including hiking, fishing, gardening, working on our homestead and so much more!

Good to see you guys getting your fence up for next year. Gotta keep those unwanted guests out. Simple living rock's the off grid life. Ariel knows a lot about gardening. 😊
Love simple living Alaska. I actually found your channel because it’s related to theirs. Thank you for sharing your lives and projects with the world. Love all the great content.
Staying focused on that hard job with such bad equipment of an auger, speaks for you.
Hey guys, one thing to note when it comes time for a tractor - most augers mount on the 3-point hitch, which is used to raise and lower the auger, but it does not allow you to add any down pressure to the auger. This means that the only downward force is from the weight of the auger. A better option is generally a skid loader for running an auger, because you have the ability to force the auger down in tough soil. I'd say that you should look into renting one for the next project, you would likely have had all of those holes dug in less than a couple of hours. Nice video, and the workout was worth it, too! -Dusty

Wise choice to fence the garden! Great choice to use Simple Living Alaska guidance for your garden. Arielle & Eric are an incredible source of information on living in Alaska!!
Hello y’all from Alabama. Excellent work you’ve done so far and I’m looking forward to seeing what else you do 👏👏👏👏. Simply Living Alaska is one of my favorite channels. You guys rocked those holes 👏👏. You definitely need a tractor for your land. The best thing you will ever buy.
a Skid Steer with an auger on the front works better than one of the back of a tractor. See DustyBottomAcresAK's comment. He's spot on. I'd rent both a Skid Steer & a Compact Tractor and see what you like best.
Maybe your posthole digger will work better for ice auger, when you need a hole for ice fishing.
Good luck building your fence around your garden Matt and Emily
Glad you got all the posts in. I know it’s hard work but you did it. Team work👍🇺🇸
Great video Matt and Emily
I love to see the Alaska community helping each other, even on KZread! Cant wait to be part of it! Might use your video for our fence here!

I purchased that same earth auger...worked great for me...I planted 19 trees & bushes in no time....(sand & clay soil) I have since purchased many Ryobi battery operated tools....all are excellent...great video..thanks
You guys are hard workers you will do fine moving on . I notice you are both Perfectionist and It’s looking awesome .

That we definitely are! We appreciate the nice comment ☺️
You need to add a Digging Bar to your tool arsenal. The box stores have them.
Sorry that it didn’t work out better with the auger. On a good note, you can get an ice attachment for it if you ever decide to go ice fishing.
Good job
Morning , You two are too young to know what “ to be continued “ for your favorite TV show is , that was a flashback when your video ended. Another great job and video . see you next week , happy Saturday :)

You could supplement t-posts in between your posts. Might be a LITTLE easier to install
The Ryobi just like mine dog over 20 holes first with one charge p it's also just the right size for taking and planning bushes and so forth works great
You can bring this auger to ice fishing.
So nice give a shout out to those who taught you! I love their channel too!

Great video your garden is looking amazing
I love your channel ❤
Another good job!
Great job guys!
I think you shouldn’t put cement on your posts. The freeze will push them out of the ground. You can see that on one of simple livings videos.

Dang wish we would have known that before. I’m sure we will learn after this winter. If there’s one person we trust up here it’s you so thank you for the tip!
Hi guys, good to see you again, just curious, why didn’t you use trees for the posts?
@AGlimpseOfAlaska
8 ай бұрын
Hi! We explained this in the video but we bought the materials a year ago when we were thinking the fence would go in long before it did. At the time we did not have the knowledge we have now of using trees as posts 😊
Did you ever stall out the auger? Tractor and loader are nice but a skidsteer will out work them and has tons of attachments.

Auger was terrible. Maybe one day we will win the lottery we don’t play and we will buy a tractor AND a skid steer!

ulitmate is a mini excavator and skidsteer and tractor lol lottery, you can't lose if you don't play.
Hi guys, I enjoy watching your videos and this one was kind of amusing. I would have taken that Ryobi auger back after the second hole. It appears to be worthless, or worse. I have over 100 acres in North Pole and am fortunate to have a John Deere tractor and have a good variety of implements including an auger which I have used to put in many holes. It is MUCH easier and more effective. It takes time to get the tools you need. I know: I've been living in northern Alaska for over 50 years as a trapper, farmer, science teacher, and I guess, an off-grid homesteader, though that was not a category until recently. You both have good attitudes and boundless energy---excellent tools for the job ahead. I personally trust God each day for the strength and the skill to get my work done, He has not failed me. I will pray for your safety and progress as you build your life in Alaska. Dave in North Pole, Alaska

Its been a while since I ran an auger, but it looks like this Ryobi one doesn't spin fast enough to pull the dirt up out of the hole and eject it? I remember the gas augers I used; you might need a post hole digger to clean out a little bit of dirt at the end, but the auger pretty much did all the work. Is that your experience with the 3-point auger on your tractor?

We took the auger back. We tried using it till the very end but it never worked out. It just can’t handle the ground here. It worked for 1 hole and for the rest it was a burden. We haven’t been to North Pole but we hope to go this winter! God is very good to us as well! Thank for the nice comment and prayers! 😄
The augers not doing the job take it back
Could those roots have been trees buried during the house construction?
@AGlimpseOfAlaska

Possibly but unlikely. The trees that we have dug up in the past have slightly decayed. These roots were “green”.
I am not being sarcastic, but I would like to know, why did you guys move to Alaska. Did you think it was going to be fun. I am very curious about what I have said. Thank you.
