Shockingly Effective Electric Garden Fence Build | Protecting Our Harvest
Ойын-сауық
The electric garden fence install is complete! And with that, the season for homestead projects has officially come to a close for us. We used as many free materials as possible to complete this build, including materials from our workbench and hoop house build. We’re so excited to have the garden protected, and we can’t wait to get to garden again come break up. We’ve come such a long way since we started our homestead, and although this is our last project on the property before winter, we have plenty of other projects to keep us busy once the snow hits!

From an Aussie with electric fencing: to test if it’s powered up, just get a long bit of grass, wet it (in your mouth if you want to be cool), and then touch the end on the wire, move it slowly forward till you feel the tickle of the power. No need to “electrocute” yourself ! Cheers, cobbers!
Hey guy, Wild Alaskan Homestead here, You need to put your fencer battery on a piece of wood up off the ground because the ground will drain the charge out of your battery and it doesn’t take long.

Hi! We are going to do that. It was only temporary to make sure the system worked. We will fix it next year!
You can buy a tester for your fence. One other thing. If a battery sets on the ground. It will drain the charge out of it. They also sell wire twister at the hardware store. You would just have to double your wire to use them. Can’t wait to see what your up to next. Your videos are nice. Keep up the good work. Later
Please get a tester for testing the electric fence. You’ll want to regularly test it to ensure all parts are working. Nice garden.
I was working next to my electric fence one day and I must have brushed my nose against it. I got a shock that felt like getting hit in the nose with a hammer. The strangest part was that afterwards there was no residual pain, none ! Nice job & thanks for the video !!!
The top of the gate is an opening they can use. Please take a look at some of the other homestead vlogs and see their gate setups. Gold Shaw Farms has a good example.
Matt apologized for being tired. After touching the fence, he didn't look so tired any more! Great work you two! Greetings from north Florida.

You are a lovely couple. Great job working together. You both look so young. You are very knowledgeable and I can’t believe that you like this kind of weather, although I’m sure it’s much better than rain. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

We love this weather!! Cold and snow is our favorite ❄️❤️ and thank you! 😊
I'm new to your channel. I've been watching the older ones. I love it! You two work great together. You make a great team. The garden looks great! You both should be proud.
Great job building your fence
I think you two have a fabulous start with your new property. Very practical - all of it. Should evolve and grow with you in the future. Congratulations. Very nice and well done.
I believe you should add a wire across the top of the gate. If there is on spot without electric fence the wildlife will definitely find it. Looks good.

They have a safety handle that you attach to one end of the wire to connect and disconnect to do this setup across the gate😊

Thank you for the idea!
Looking good, on your final fence might want to use T-posts, they are a lot stronger and last a lot longer, also might want to invest in a T-post pounder/driver to drive the posts in the ground, they are well worth the money spent. Keep up the Great content, looking forward to your next video.
Good work! If and when you have time, I would suggest 45 degree 6 feet long 4"x4"'s on every corner post as well as the gate. The corner posts and the gate opening are under a great deal of lateral stress and should be braced up. Try adding a short length of electrically charged wire across the upper gate opening using quick release clips for easy entry and exit. You won't regret doing a bit more to strengthen your fence after your hard work. A hungry Moose is not your friend.

Great job building the gate
i'm thrilled with all the great suggestions posted in the comments.
After the Winter snow and the Spring thaw you will know if you need to brace up your corner posts.
That turned out pretty nice, well done. Those high tensile crimp clamps are aluminum. When you don't have the proper crimper you can put the wires in place and lay the crimp connector on a hard surface, like the sledgehammer, and hit it with another hammer to squeeze it flat. -Dusty

Interesting watching you both doing the fencing
Good job on the fence. I was hard work but you will be glad you did it when you start planting in the spring. Until the next project have a good week. Take care from Cape Cod Massachusetts 🥰✌️🇺🇸
Nice job. One tip, rabbits can still get through that type fencing. They did mine. Consider adding a section of chicken wire (or some other smaller opening wire) to the bottom couple of feet of the main fence.
Cool mustasch. Love it.
Congratulations on your progress it's looking great and cheers and Best wishes from Tasmania
Great job you two! (And Aurora) that fence should keep the moose out. Kinda cool with the mama moose & her twins just right there eating away with you guys working. 😊

We are always amazed with the nature in this state! It truly is always “right in your backyard” 🙂
Great video Emily and Matt
Okay, fyi…always use the BACK of your hand when testing electrified fencing. Otherwise, you run the risk of you hand clenching closed on the wire and being unable to get loose for a bit. Believe me, that’s not fun. Great looking fence.

Nicely Done. Test electricity use the back of your hand. Your hand and arm will contract and pull away. Open hand and it can grip on the wire. All the best
I believe you are going to have issues with your wooden posts in a year or two. What happens is the frost will grab a hold of the wood and actually push it up. The posts need to be either wrapped in plastic (the below ground level) or concreted into the ground at least 3 feet. The garden is looking good. Thanks for sharing
When testing a hot fence by hand (if you feel you have to resort to that), always use the BACK of your fingers (of your non-dominant hand) so a muscle spasm doesn't cause you to grab onto the hot wire. You could buy a tester for a few dollars though.
I enjoyed your video and subscribed. Appreciate your sharing your thoughts and honesty. Good friends are priceless and you appear to be great friends. It's good to be able to work together and accomplish finished projects. Blessings to you both and prayers for your health, safety, strength, wisdom, peace and success in all that you set your heart to do. All in His Holy Name. ☝️🙏🙌🇺🇸💪🤠❤️🎯

A SUGGESTION: Tie Orange Marking Tape about every 2-3 Feet around the Top of The Fence. High Visibility for Moose & Deer; And, You'll See where your Fence is While Plowing the Snow.
@AGlimpseOfAlaska

That is a very good idea!
Shocked is not usually fatal. Electrocuted is usually fatal or at least seriously injured. Get a tester to see how "hot" your wire is. Your gate needs some electric wire across it also. Maybe put some fencing with smaller openings like chicken wire on the bottom to keep out rabbits and smaller animals. Good job in protecting your garden and your future food. Lots of hours of hard work and money gardening just to let the animals eat the "fruits of your labor". When you have crops growing put up some game cameras and adjust your defenses accordingly. Good luck!

Nice job on the fence. If you run into issues with smaller critters in the spring you can always just run a jumper cable from the poly wire to the fence and electrify the whole thing.
Great fence! It looks good *and* looks efficient. I'm in Texas and had to use hog panels for my fencing (lots of wild hogs around). To keep out the rabbits etc... I used chicken fencing (it's cheap here) as a second layer on the bottom, and the electric wire for the deer. You will be glad you put in all the hard work now when the spring gardening comes around! Can't wait to see what surprises you have for the winter!

They do make a meter to check your fence. But your way works too although it hurts a lot more!
Put a camera up so we can see it. Great job. As always be safe and God bless you

Highly commend you two for your well thought out project and keeping on task. I hope your fence will be good protection for your garden! 🌲 🌲
Fence looks good! Make sure you put the battery on something so it isn't just sitting on the ground.

Might think about building and insulating something around the battery to keep it out of the snow and rain, the moisture will drain your battery.
Awesome work, everything looks great! ❤
WOW you have accomplished so much and you should be proud of yourselves - incredible transformation! LOVE all the things and can't wait to see all the food you'll be growing next year and those moose - incredibly unfazed by humans lol... the fence should definitely get them though!!! hope you catch them trying! ❤

Wondering about the battery be in a milk box or box for weather protection- make sure you have loops/dips in the wires so water doesn't run down the wire into the box. Wondering what extremely prickly bush you could plant on the outside perimeter of the fence along the backside. just start piling rocks on the outside and inside of the fence. hawthorn or blackberries? Have two layers of fence about a ft or two apart- plant the hedge between them and every fall just trim back let the hedge grow and hold the fence up. The deer could only eat to the fence. Then the bushes would entwine into the fence. On the garden side you could pick the berries.
Great job Matt & Emily 👏👏👏👏

New subscriber. I am looking forward to your journey and adventure! Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and E Minister.
nice
Post pounder tool, more posts....smaller spaces between moose will walk right through
You can use Japanese char method to preserve exterior wood
You might stick your battery in a inexpensive Styrofoam cooler, to help protect the battery from discharging by it sitting on the ground
Great video! To prevent bears and other diggers from raiding your garden next summer, would it be a good idea to clear a strip of ground all around the perimeter of the fence and installing electric fence near ground level, for added protection?
@AGlimpseOfAlaska

Next year we will be filling the bottom with rocks and gravel. That should do the trick.
Great job guy’s! You both have worked so hard to get your gardens going! 🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
i saw a video a while back about putting up a fence in ground affected by permafrost. If it starts causing problems for your fence and you find you have to re-do some posts... having holes that are bell shaped can keep them from coming up. I wish I could find the video to just link it here, but I don't have much time to look for it and my initial search hasn't turned up anything.
Love your content, I have to say, you did a great job with the fence. But the battery should be 3' of the ground. Not good under snow. And it does snow a lot in Alaska 😊😊😊. GBU Both.

Great job mi friend, I sold Batteries for AAA, for 15years. I still remember a few tricks and some points.
❤
A lot of hard work but it will pay off.
why 3 grounding rods? that type of ground should only need 1. you need to get the battery off the ground. the ground will drain your battery. enjoyed your video
Great job but Hard rubber can eventually deteriorate, develop cracks (no matter how small), and if placed on the damp ground or concrete, the battery can self-discharge.

What about the bottom of the fence? Rabbit’s and other critters will go under.
Do you have many deer around? They will jump that fence if they want in.
It's call terminal
You desperately need a tpost driver 100% easier 👍
Have you seen “North to Alaska” channel?
Alligator clips
Everything looks great. Two questions. One- does battery need to be off the ground ? and 2 does battery need to be covered? I learned alot. Ive got deer and raccoon that have discovered my garden.
@AGlimpseOfAlaska
8 ай бұрын
Thank you! The battery does need to be off the ground. It should be covered but it doesn’t have to because it is a marine battery. We will get it covered and off the ground next year! 👍🏼
Shouldn't the fence battery be enclosed and insulated for winter?
