Diesel Piezoelectric Injector Quick-Fix
The newer Diesel Piezoelectric Injectors are triggered by a capacitor discharge. These are the facts on testing the Diesel Piezoelectric Injector.
1) They use about 120 volts or higher, with a current flow of about 7 Amps.
2) There are 3 to 7 mini pulses per cylinder power cycle.
3) The ECM shuts power off in the event of an injector fault.
4) The high trigger voltage makes the injector crystal expand.
5) Use about 170 to 220 K Ohms are a resistance guide for the Injector. Test scross the two injector pins.
6) Diesel Piezoelectric Injectors crystal tends to short to the outter casing.
7) Test the injector, using an Ohm meter from each pin to ground, thereby testing for a short to case. There should be infinite resistance from injector pin to ground, meaning the ijector case.
8) You must measure across each pin, to ground. Again, there should be no resistance value whatsoever.
Remember, if the injector is faulty, the ECM will disable or close this circuit. So it'll seem like the ECM is faulty. That concludes our Diesel Piezoelectric Injector quick fix.

Excellent, Mandy. Very valuable information. These videos just get better and better. I suppose if you combine these tests wit a back leakage test you can arrive at the right diagnosis most, if not every time. Is there a test that you can do to force the ECM to to output a pulse or signal in case of a faulty injector so that you can definitely rule out the ECM??? Thank you very much.

THe issue with these Piezo injectors, by the way, it's the same whether for Diesel or the newer Direct Injection, the issue is High-Voltage. If you force the ECM to trigger a faulty or shorted injector, you fry a lot of eggs. Makes sense?

Hi Mandy, thanks for your reply. I didn't make myself clear. I didn't mean to force the ECM to trigger a faulty injector, but rather output a signal that could be measured or observed, for example, on an oscilloscope and that way you can be sure the ECM is definitely not faulty as well as the faulty injector. Many thanks, Joe

Ok, I see... Yes, this is doable by performing a Current RAMP test using a ClampOn Amp Probe. The problem is that when the ECM sees a Piezo-Injector issue it shuts down the circuit. So, at that time you can't test, or do anything. The only option is to erase codes, connect Scope and ClampOn probe and try and do the test. But these computers are too smart and realize there's a shorted injector almost instantly. After doing many tests, we've found that this is the best way to test the Piezo Injectors.

Hi.. I have a ford Continental piezoelectric injectors. It has a mileage of around 18000kms only and the mechanic change all of the 4 injectors. How can i check if the old 4 injectors is still okay or at least can be repaired?

It's an involved process. Check this channel as I have videos dealing with that.

Is there a way to repair once it's shorted to body.

Yes, you need to test it first. Then do the insight. So test, repair and glow test. Here's the tester. www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/GDI_CRDI_Direct_Injector_Tester.html

@@ADPTraining I will likely send it to an injector specialist for repair but didn't know if it would be worth doing with it being open circuit to body. Solenoid resistance is correct but failed the insulation test.
