Fuel Injector Electrical Quick-Fix
Running electrical tests on the fuel injector should be a main component of an auto repair injection strategy. The fuel injector is a coil winding, that magnetically moves a fuel valve pintle. Here are the electrical facts about the fuel injector.
1) The opening and closing of the injector can be determined, by the superimposed voltage and current waveform.
2) As a rule of thumb, fuel injectors draw about 950 milli Amps, or almost 1 Amp.
3) The first step in testing a fuel injector is to make sure it's being triggered, so use a noid light to make sure ECM is doing its job. Do not use an LED test light to test injectors, as the current or Amps is all wrong to test the injector.
4) Use a stethoscope or screw driver to listen for a clicking injector noise.
5) The injector always has 12 volts steady power applied to it, through a power relay. On some vehicles, the injector relay stays off with engine off, so a crank signal is needed by the ECM to turn the injector relay on. Dodge and many European cars use this system.
6) The ECM provides a pulsed ground to activate the fuel injector.
7) At idle, most ECMs give the injector about a 3 to 5 milli second pulse. During cranking the pulse may reach over 20 milli seconds.
8) The best way to determine fuel flow pulse is not using injector pulse width, is by doing a duty cycle test with the multi-meter.
9) There are 2 electrical tests done on the fuel injector, the duty-cycle and the oscilloscope test. To run a duty-cycle test, connect the multi-meter set to duty-cycle between injector pulsed wire and 12 volt power. On 99% of vehicles, at idle, the duty-cycle should be about 2.9 to 3%.
10) To run the waveform test, use an oscilloscope of graphing meter with a good resolution. Connect the leads between battery negative and injector pulsed wire. Look for the following waveform spots. Make sure it's grounded all the way down. Look for a clean pulse-width. Make sure the shut off spike is at least 35 volts or higher. Many ECMs clip the turn-off spike at 35 volts. The high spike is an indication of injector coil winding health.
Remember to use the injector resistance specification. The 0.95 Amps rule of thumb here is just that, a general rule. That concludes the Fuel Injector Electrical Quick-Fix.

I find the video both instructive and useful. If you think that auto or engine diagnosing is just following a recipe like procedure, you should refrain to get into this field. If you feel you "wasted" your precious time... then you learned nothing, because you understood NOTHING.

Ok, I'm assuming it's a bike or motorcycle. If it's like an automobile, power is supplied to injectors by a relay. Then the ECM drives the ground side. Look for the relay and make sure it has power going in, like from a fuse. If so, then check power out from relay. If not, change relay. If ok, then keep tracing wire. Hope this helps. We also have this tool for MPFI Injector testing. www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/Injector_Pulser_Tool.html

You're talking the inductive spike. This is a normal occurrence in any inductor. The collapsing magnetic field induced the spike.

@@ADPTraining Yes, my second remark was to make clear that the reverse voltage spike is caused by interrupting the coil current. That the multimeter is showing O.950 A in DCVolts range is not possible. Powered by a dc voltage source like the 12V car battery, the coil (0.5 Ohm resistance) will surely burn. I suppose that you mean that the coil current has a 0.95A value after about 3 ms. (= ending of the driver pulse) . But therefore you will need real current meter with peak-hold memory or a scope. All the best, Cyriel

I have a Honda cbr 600 motorcycle I guess all injectors work basically the same as car. I don’t have a lot test equipment other then meter and test light and node tester. My fuel pump is kicking on and remove fuel hose at rail and plenty of fuel next in line is pressure regulator which I replaced with new one I’m getting pluse on node light but the injectors are not spraying I’m sure all 4 can’t be plugged. I can spray starting fuild in each carb and runs til fuel is burnt up. If I’m getting power to injectors what would keep them from working. Thanks

Love your explanation. What makes you think inj are not firing? Take a long screwdriver and tip to inj, other end or handle to you ear. Crank motor listen for clicking. If no clicking them ECM Computer is faulty. If you do get click, then fuel flow VOLUME is the issue.

I’m getting a bright light pluse from node light tho why would I get a good reading from node light but not letting injectors open? Is there a power source to injectors? Maybe it is showing power cause of node light lighting up but possibly not enough I’ll have to check voltage to injectors I’m just puzzled that node light shows it’s getting power to injectors and not open yet a 9 v battery from my smoke detector will. I’m not sure if new injectors is causing it or not enough power forcing gas out

Port injection 0.9 mA maximum. All injectors can't be shorted. If so, then play the lottery cause you'll win. If throttle body injectors, then that's normal.

Someone please help! To make a very long and frustrating situation short I’m getting code P0306 & P0206 and my noid light will not light up on #6 injector connector at all, I checked all the rest of my connectors and they all light up and pulse....I swapped #6 with #4 and code moved to #4 so it’s quite evident it’s either the feed wire, controlled wire, or ecu... Here’s where it gets frustrating for me... the feed wire is registering 14.2 volts and the ecu controlled ground is registering 0 volts with key off and 14.2 volts koeo, so my question is how am I getting the proper volts but my noid light isn’t lighting at all or pulsating??? I checked both wires all the way to the fuse box and the ecu and didn’t find any openings in the wires... I must also add that a month prior I lost all dash lights and gauges and my blue instrument panel needles are flashing...is this common when a vehicle’s ecu needs re-flashed or programmed? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated....my vehicle is an 09 Escalade hybrid and I hooked up scan tool and noticed my 300v hybrid battery is only at 63% SOC (state of charge) could this be related in anyway ??? I have experienced other electrical problems through the years however it never really affected engine performance.

Ok, nice description, which is rare. It also looks like you have an analytical mind, good. Now, here's one thing that pops to mind right away, YOU MAY HAVE VOLTAGE, BUT DO YOU HAVE PROPER CURRENT. I capitalized to stress the point. I've had issues like that, drove me crazy, and ended up being that the Injector Power Feed wire was hanging by a single strand of wire. The same could happen to the ground Pulse inj. wire. Clearly, you're having an issue with Inj # 6 only, so don't think reflashing can solve that. This is why I created my STRESS LOADING TESTLIGHT. You can only prove your circuit when you STRESS it. If you want to call me, go to my website and remind me who you are. www.autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/Stress_Loaded_Tester.html autodiagnosticsandpublishing.com/

This doesn't show you how to fix anything. All this does is show you how get diagnostic information, and doesn't show you what to do with that info. NOT ALL injectors run on 12 volts. A majority of non direct injection cars' injectors that have been out since early 2000s run on 3v or 6v. You're going to burn out injectors if you're going to be testing on 12v.
