I mean it's terrible that Pokemon still does this, don't get me wrong, I'm astounded that it's been over 20 years and they still haven't ditched this outdated game design, but it's hardly an accurate description fo the overall video game industry/market.

    another good example was imperial recruiter. there was 2 printings (og and promo) both sat at 200$ and then it got a reprint. the price fluctuated between 180-200 for the 2 old printings while the new one sat at 30$. granted that card price recently went down a bit but then again everything has gone down lately.

    I own nearly the entire Reserved List (I miss Bazaars, Workshop, Tabernacle, Drop of Honey, Candelabra, Jihad, and Gauntlet of Might). I "only" have 33 duals. I play Old School and Legacy. I still want that stupid Reserved List to be abolished. Legacy is on Life support where I live (France). I want players to play with at sanctioned events, not more and more expensive cardboard.

    Yeah, this is my problem with the argument for "budget" legacy decks. If I wanted to play Legacy I would want to play something like U/B control, buuuuuuut a playset of force of wills is REAL pricey, and that's before you get into the Mana bases. Also if you don't have a group that plays the format you either can't play or you have build a couple of other decks to play with.

    Don't think of it as a "Here play this and only this deck" but as a "Here is a good starting point to get you into the format." For instance I typically will recommend Burn because you can start there, pick up a few cards here or there then play UR Delver and eventually play Grixis Delver.

    @@ness87mtg The issue is 1. Not everyone that wants to get into legacy wants to play burn, D&T, or some pirate jank (even just to get their foot in the door). 2. A "few cards here and there" we are talking a thousands plus dollars for those few cards to play a fundamentally different deck in delver. Its a stupid out of touch thing to say from them that people should just pick up a cheap deck just to have the privilege to play in this format. Hell screw the middle man and just take your modern deck to legacy. You probably have just as good of a chance winning consistently against real legacy decks as you would with legacy burn. Again people play non-rotating magic to play what they want to play not what they are forced to play.

    @@billcravens5907 I do agree those "few cards" are a ton of money and I do think the barrier to entry is a huge issue for Legacy and I would like to see the reserved list go away. I just don't know a better solution to recommend to someone who is interested in Legacy but is hesitant due to the cost other than recommending a budget deck like Burn or Dredge, or some Depths lists. Heck Miracles isn't too bad if you hold off on getting Tundras for a while. Modern decks are one possible solution and people can have success with them due to decks not having appropriate answers for them. Bottom line is Legacy is my favorite format and I don't want it to die out. I wish people had better access to these cards so people don't have to recommend budget decks to people that are interested.

    The important thing to know ab legacy accessibility is just whether or not your store allows proxies. Even if it's just 4 to 5 proxies, than can significantly decrease the cost of the majority of decks, and I've heard of many stores than do more than that, like 12 to 15. One of my fav decks, which is legacy madness, could be bought for around 250 dollars if you were able to proxy some duals, some LEDs, and a few of your fetches.

    No there are so many problems with a promissory estoppel claim. 1 you'd have to prove you went out and spent $3K on kudzu or whatever because it was reserve listed. You'd probably be someone who speculates on hundreds or thousands of cards and most aren't reserved list, so that's an uphill battle. 2 you'd have to prove wizards should have expected you to go spend $3K on kudzu based on their promise. There's no real reasonable way to argue that wizards should have expected the insane things finance people imported to the game from the stock market. 3 your damages would be whatever you paid when you bought in minus whatever the card is worth after the reprint. So, almost certainly zero since most likely the cards would stay above your buy in price, and at worst would return to the exact price they were when they were freely reprintable. And that's assuming wizards doesn't do anything clever and just reprints the whole reserved list pixel for pixel. They can print triple lands and dual moxes if they want. They can print one worthless reserve list card that isn't worth suing over and wait two years, and then reprint the rest after everyone has waived their reserve list claims by sitting out the statute of limitations from when they first broke the promise. Trust me the lawyers who weighed in on this issue knew what promissory estoppel was and analyzed specifically that issue because there is no contract issue. Prof knew the claim would be estoppel based and would definitely fail.

    Quick PSA guys - proxy decks are the best way to enjoy legacy and learn the format without the investment, and just because you can't play sanctioned events with proxy decks doesn't mean you lose out on any of the fun or nuance. Someone in my playgroup proxied about twenty legacy decks , sleeved them up, and keeps them in one of the large Pirate Lab carriers. He brings it to our FNM every week, and players often show up early to play, and we try to squeeze in a quick game between rounds as well. Factoring in ink, paper, sleeves, and the carrying case, your entire LGS can play legacy for an investment of just a couple hundred dollars... if even that. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

    So what they mean about the reserved list agreement being legally binding is this: according to American contract law, and given that WotC “promised” never to reprint these cards, if they every did, any collector that lost money because of that reprint could if they wanted to sue WotC for the exact amount they lost, which of course every single one of them would do because they want their money back. I mean, just look at Modern with its fetchlands and planeswalkers. I know for sure that I wouldn't spend that much, regardless of which format it is.

    So my 2cents on the RL: I'm a long-time MTG player, playing standard since the Shadowmoor/Eventide block, and then modern and now almost exclusively EDH due to time constraints (some modern on the side for fun still). While I may not be a completely dedicated MTG-Financer, the reserve list has allowed me to dabble into investing in small-time, as I don't have as much expendable income as people who do the stock market. I don't have to dump thousands into an investment to hope it appreciates and risk losing thousands if it crashes. RL-cards are one of the few investments out there that is basically guaranteed to appreciate. I don't have to worry about sitting on pricey modern cards, wondering if now is the right time to dump before they get reprinted and have their value slashed in half. RL cards will only ever go up, so you can wait as long as you want and won't ever get burned for it (assuming the RL stays in place). I enjoy the fact that I have a small stock in items that are "safe", and if I decide to sell some or all of my collection down the road, I could make double, triple, or quintuple the money back that I spent on them. And that's a very, VERY cool upside to have tacked on the back of a hobby you enjoy so much. Now on the gameplay side, I definitely get the unfairness of how some formats like legacy, EDH to an extent, and especially vintage feel locked-away by the RL. To this I say, proxies. Most of the local game stores around me fully allow proxies for vintage and legacy tournaments, because they're aware how ridiculous it is to acquire the authentic cards. And if people just want to play the format because they enjoy it, well then go ahead and do so with proxies. You can have literally just as much fun with cards that look almost identical to the real thing. The ONLY reason you would NEED to have the real ones, is if you are one of the big-leagues, going to sanctioned regional/national/international GPs and tournaments. And if that's the case, you probably could afford the real ones anyway. If your LGS doesn't allow proxies for shop tournaments tho, then my apologies...maybe try convincing them to allow it? Just my thoughts on the matter, I imagine not many share my opinion, but wanted to put it out there. Keep up the content~

    @@goldcreeper7376 no I'm saying the majority of cedh decks would smash most "casual decks". Certain competitive stax decks may have a hard time against some casual decks but that's about it. If someone is flashing a hulk/add naus doomsday shit in the frist couple turn of the game with counter back up I dont think most casual decks can or will deal with that. Theres a reason they are "competitive" and the others are "casual". Now theres a grey area where people play not competitive archetypes but build it in a Competitive way and that kinda works but it's basically just playing a tier 2 cedh deck. Play what you have fun with but dont pretend ur playing a "good" deck or get salty when a hulk is flashed turn 2.

    In the long run, keeping Vintage and Legacy alive as playable formats does more to prop up the prices of old staple cards than would refusing to reprint them and letting the formats die off. Once the format dies then all the value that comes from the cards as playing pieces will evaporate overnight.

  • @KingBobXVI
    @KingBobXVI5 жыл бұрын

    On axing the reserve list: I do think there would be absolutely no price change for Alpha and Beta, and little change for Unlimited (and it would rebound quickly for what change did happen). The thing about those sets is that people don't really buy those cards to _play_ with very little exception made for power in Unlimited (as the most "affordable" recalls and moxen are from that set - though those are still all only playable in Vintage, and I wouldn't be against keeping them out of print) - nobody is going down to Friday Night Magic and dropping their slabbed and graded deck on the table. Where the price _would_ take a nose dive (but still, only temporarily) is in the Revised dual lands - those are the only high-cost only-in-ABUR cards that people do actually buy for the _necessity_ in deck building. Print Vintage Masters with duals, and those would no longer be literally the only option, I could see them then dropping, wow, all the way down to the price of _Zendikar fetch lands_ oh no, but the retro art and style would still climb back up as it's still unique compared to what would probably be the $50 Masters reprints. Also: on the finance people, you should watch Rudy's video on the subject - he argued in favor of axing the reserve list so he could go in and buy all the ABUR duals and power during the initial selloff panic, which is a great idea, because he's not an idiot and knows they'll rise in price again quickly (especially with more players getting into the game as it becomes accessible...).

    I'm enjoying this series more and more. Fantastic content and topics. I've largely played Modern and Limited (although I far prefer Modern) and have always considered Legacy but never wanted to pull the trigger on making a deck purchase because I feared the format wasn't going to be supported by WoTC and my own perception that there just isn't enough player support for it. Apparently, and happy I am incorrect. I do however think I would purchase a deck on MTGO before I purchased the paper cards. Side note: While I love what WotC has done with Arena, I just don't accept it because of it's highly constrained format support. I don't want to HAVE to play Standard or Limited. I want to play Modern, Commander, Legacy and (in fact) every format that I want to play. I continue to play on MTGO and have given up completely on Arena. Great user experience but ultimately, it falls short on what I want personally as a player. -mM

    Alternative suggestion- What if they ban dual lands in legacy? It would drive price down, dramatically, and it would make the problem people seem to be having of “ermahgerd blue 2 stronk” somewhat fixed- having to shock in lands on top of your usual forces hurts, not to mention having to use daze on top of that. Other decks might rise to the top that havent seen play, or are lesser played in the meta rn. I imagine maverick and nic fit making a return, meaning more dnt lists would have reason to run leonin arbiter. Stoneblade would be strong for sure, but not to a horrific extent like it is in modern (force, while painful, would still exist). The only boogeyman I see being a problem is reanimator/sneak and show decks, but force still exists, and the new printing of lavinia really helps with that matchup. Dredge would see a return in this proposed meta I assume, so this would provide more reason to run graveyard hate- which hoses reanimator too. If they’re not good enough for everybody to use, why are they good enough for anybody to use? The reserve list may as well be a ban list, why not make it official?

I started wetting my toes into the format, and it's basically what I want modern to be. It has complex gameplay, punished linear combo decks that modern doesn't punish, and has a much larger deck pool that I initially believed. I still have not built a deck, am looking forward to, and learning to play the format. I don't believe it will ever replace modern so long as I can play primeval titan on turn two, but it feels more like what modern should be, than the format that it is.
