BTW professor, you should look into MTG: Arena matchmaking how tilted is. because who buy packs with gems gets easier matches for a while. if you play straight free to play as you mean to do... you will get harder matches. game is rigged.

Really interesting discussion. Everyone I play on ranked currently is using mill tactics or mutations. I am playing a white/black life gain (Vito) deck and a mono green Stompy deck. I don't care how long it takes. I'm winning a lot, making ppl think and having fun!! Best of 3 with sideboard tweaks would be cool, however it seems that would need to be optional for ppl without time to sit down for an hour and also breaks in-between games because i always need the toilet or a drink or the phone rings or there's someone at the door.... IMHO, there are lots of ppl out there who see it like these guys and that will help to maintain the... magic in Magic 😁
"Merfolk is like monored" the face of the prof....I just sensed a new ulcer.
So I’m just getting into MTG at 40, been to one Open House prior, I went to my first prerelease today, but not before watching several of your videos. I went 2 for 2, and won a door prize. It was a great time and the people there were quite helpful. I loved it. Thanks again!

Best of 1 will suck in paper because it will take longer to get everyone moved around to the right seat than to play the game.

I'll speak up for it since nobody else does - I love control mirrors. All you ever hear is complaining but I know many people who enjoy control mirrors. Unpopular opinion but at least there is a voice for it instead of just hate for it.

was this recorded before they announced bo3 coming to ladder?
One thing that is often overlooked in the discussion for Best of One in Arena is the issue of barrier to entry. While Best of Three is "real" Magic and Best of One is "garbage for people who don't deserve our wonderful Magic format," and thus obviously it shouldn't be extended to paper competitive events, you're neglecting to consider that sideboards are a huge barrier. Starting out on Arena, you don't start with decks that have sideboards. The starter decks are 60 cards, and only 60 cards. When you build your first 'real' deck, a common theme you'll find is that sideboards can make up upwards of half the cost of the total deck-- in Arena it can be even moreso. Mono Red in Best of One? Relatively cheap, few if any mythics, but sideboarding for best of three with the deck involves putting in Rekindling Phoenixes, potentially four copies of a mythic that you only start with a single copy of, and that's just to name one arbitrarily selected deck and card. If you want to have multiple passably constructed decks? Making them Best of Three viable can easily double or triple the required investment. Sure, any black deck can just slot in four copies of duress (though after playing since the wipe I don't actually own a single copy due not opening sets that Duress is found in), but that's only 4/15. Add to this strain on resource the strain on time as discussed, and perhaps more damningly, the strain on skill: where does Arena teach a player how to build a sideboard? How to tune their decks for game two and three? Does it possess any resources to prepare a player for the 'authentic' experience of Magic? In my humble, non-expert opinion, Arena badly needs competitive best of three, but best of one is vital for any form of Magic that wants to attract new players as it cuts down the barrier to entry to a massive degree. Would you want to go to your local game store with your first 60 card deck and have to play a best of three where your opponent stomps you completely for the later two games because their superior collection allowed them to trounce you after boarding? Sure, on some level that's inevitable, natural even, but is it what we want the new player experience to be?
Your guys banter and chemistry is great
Loving the Podcast. Just to let you know that a few days ago on the 14th a January State of the Beta was released detailing some upcoming information regarding Arena. They stated that they will be releasing a Bo3 ranked mode on the 31st with the next ranked Preseason. The State of the Beta posts on the MTG Arena Forums (General Discussion section) are a great way to see what WOTC is planning on implementing in the future.
LIES! Nothing "dies" to Scour from Existence.

Man I just loooove the opening skits hahaha
I'm just here for the Brady Bunch references.
As I am a bit of a control player on Arena (UB right now) I love playing against other control players.
seeing this in 2021, i remember that standard, it was beautiful
My thing about arena is that a single match takes about 15 or less minutes, best 2 of 3 takes muuuuch longer. When I'm playing paper magic, I WANT it to take long and get my money's worth. It's so much more intense when you're actually facing the person. When I'm waiting 3 minutes for someone to play a land because they're busy checking their phone, it is not worth the time unless I set aside time for it. Hence why best of one is good for arena
Laughed so hard with the intro
But you did have to pay for it, Prof. You paid in _time._
love this podcast
If they wanted to be envious of any kind of similar game, they should take a look at HEX and its resource system. Land could easily become something similar to their shards. If it did, it would really help to normalize some of the extremes of land rng, and actually make the game better. Its depressing to see in a tournament the finals and semi-finals just being "oh I got land and you didn't"
Banning faithless looting would hit so many decks. My decks are Hollow One and Dredge. I would go from two tier 1 decks to none in one fell swoop!! It would be horrific for me tbh.
Thank you Professor for introducing me to PK.

Davriel Cane, the Man of the Manor. 😃
I'm just hearing Vince 7 months later, thinking that 'Aqua decks' were a really oppresive deck in arena back then. At the 31:00 point I realize he's saying 'Aggro decks'...
Apart from sideboarding 3 game matches add a lot of strategy to mulliganing and the first few turns of the game. You keep different hands vs different decks and you play differently when you know the match up. Having every game be blind rewards decks that are more all in and built less around counterplay (midrange and control).
I watched this while on the toilet
They're already planning on best of one tournaments, btw. Recently, in my LGS I was told that they got an announcement from WotC that they're supposed to offer best of ône drafts now. No one wanted to play in them, but it seems to be a thing they're trying
That opening is the Elixir my shitty day needed
Having sideboard (and more deep and complexity) was the main reason to me to switch from Heartstone to MTG. About ladder, you really have to look for ways to balance because if not aggro fills the ladder until some combo or control decks happens to be broken enough to be tier S/0.
Ya, side decks can be very important in best of 3. With knowledge of different decks. One can always pin point a decks weakness and reduce it to a single card being able to kill a deck completely.
Thanks prof for your videos today i had my first paper experience And IT was awesome 2-3 orzov again ty
that Brady Bunch part.....amazing stuff haaahaa
Hey love your channel and the podcast! On your topic of one round magic they are forcing one round draft at my local game store next month. Are they doing this everywhere? Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks and thanks for the great channel.
I feel like there is a lot misconceptions being thrown around about the ladder in this video. As soon as you get to platinum, you gain and loose stars at the same rate, and at that point win % really start to matter a lot. As I remember you need about 20 more wins than loses to get from plat to diamond. At 100% thats 20 games, at 60% it is an average of 100 games and 55% its 200 games on average. Also I think main part of where the sideboard takes skill, is that it makes it harder to net-deck. You will see very skilled players do a similar thing with metagame calls, and use tech cards to play around the most played strategies. Just as an example I would start to tech in negates since I was mainly loosing to turbo-fog (playing izzet drakes w. phoenixes).
It would be incredibly hard to do best of one in paper with any kind of attendance. The manpower overhead of the scorekeeper entering that many results that often plus doing the pairing would require a much larger judging staff.
I'd actually be interested in seeing what a modern metagame would be like for a one match format. How would you include hate cards in the deck now? Would a meta shift more because of how one deck grows in popularity, the amount of answers against it increases? Not in paper of course, but since a lot of the game of modern is decided based on the sideboard, it's hard to tell how good it could be
43:37 had me laughing pretty good!
Risk Factor is awesome in Modern Burn.
who knew sean bean loved MTG so much
Where do i sign up for play only control mirror match on arena?
i feel like people forget shortly after death shadow was rampant gitaxian probe was band to soften the deck, sure the card was strong and prob should have been sooner but you could prob say the same thing about some arch light cards
I indeed just need a real drafting experience, with 7 people drafting and playing one against each other

Watched some of the recent tourney finals... they never used their sideboard in a Bo3. A lot of people act like its a huge deal, and it can impact a match-up, but most decks right now really don't need a sideboard in Bo3 in standard.
I'm listening to this while playing Jeskai control in the ranked ladder.
"Playing hearthstone it was vocative of the toilet"... man how I love how you said it. @tolariancomunnitycollege
I suggest Arena consider having best of one in the casual play and best of 3 pretty much elsewhere.
What about an April Fools Day free pauper Draft labeled as mythic Draft? 🤣
I've been grinding the ladder with Mono Blue Tempo and stuck on Gold for a while now. I made it up to tier 2 once, then went on a losing streak and fell all the way down to the bottom of tier 4. I'd like to play something else, but since I've only been playing a few of weeks and haven't spent any money on the game, I just don't have the cards.
The real gate to the speed of Arena as far as I'm aware is the mechanics of leveling up into mythic. It doesn't matter how many rounds you go with a single, if there's no punishment for losing games then people will never play slower, more intricate and nuanced decks even if they edge out a moderately higher win percentage. It just doesn't make sense to invest your time into those decks. You need to actually punish people who lose games and let them de-rank. I think that would be a major influence in letting arena breath more life into the diversity of mtg mechanics. Imagine this. The next GP/MF they changed the points/qualification system. Instead of there being gated time slots to play an opponent, you were paired up with a random opponent who had a similarish record as you who has reported their match as finished, and the goal of the tournament is to be the first so-many people to get to 10 match-wins. It doesn't matter how many losses you have. If this were legacy would people be playing miracles, death and taxes, junk or any other midrange-y deck? Of course not. Everyone would be playing storm, charbelcher, maybe elves, or even ridiculous decks that should never get played like cheerios because they win on turn 2 or 3 extremely consistently and only lose if the opponent has interaction. Dredge might even go by the wayside because of how long it takes people to spool through their graveyard and look at all the dredge/recursion. We didn't change the best of 3 format, but we've had the exact same detrimental effect on deck variety and quality. I think there's only two ways to start to solve this for Arena. Either make Arena more like a traditional rank points system where you earn more points if you beat a higher pointed opponent, lose less if a higher ranked one beats you, etc. Or you make mini-tournaments where you have to win a single elim best of 8 to rank up, with the possibility of ranking down if you perform consistently below a 50% in your current rank.
In the fighting game Killer Instinct you play bo1 up until gold rank and then you have to play bo3. I think this would be an interesting thing to try with Arena.
Video didn't age that well they already announced Bo3 ranked. Anyway i've been stuck on Diamond Tier 1 for ages and i find a wide variety of decks. Also winning a lot of games in a row with a control deck you get faster to Mythic than with Aggro deck with 50% winrate stuck in same rank forever.
I don’t play on ladder often because the rewards aren’t great anyways and would like to experience normal magic, unfortunately going into casual traditional mode you mostly encounter common piles
Hi Professor, i always do enjoy your video's keep up the good work. I have a question to you or maybe someone else can also help me, i am familiair with Magic the gathering, but a friend of mine isn't, we mostly play board and card games like Dominion, Machavelli and settlers of Catan. Can anyone recommend good starter decks which are suitable for 1v1, but also for 2v2? Fun, balanced and not to expensive is what i'm looking for. I myself liked Lorwynn, Innistrad, return to ravnica and kaladesh, but i haven't played for a while, just started again with Magic Arena online. Thnx in advance for any info!
Something I don't think you guys brought up is- there is already a very small proportion of standard legal cards that are actually playable in standard. Removing sideboarding makes this pool of playable cards even smaller. So from the standpoint of buying Arena packs, it's a feels bad because now even less of your cards you are opening are actually playable.
18:00 Besides MTG I also play Pokemon and I often say that if Pokemon had a sideboard mechanic the game would be way better and the meta decks/net decks would be more diverse. MTG would be able to work without a sideboard, but that would make it another play variant
When is the next "In Response"?
So I’m not very familiar with Arena, but what if you earned more trophies (the games I play use a trophy based system but I’m not sure How arena works) for the longer each game is to encourage less “sexy” decks
Best of One should be rebranded as SpeedMagic in the same way Chess is the same game in both versions, SpeedMagic will be the same but with a focus on the clock aswell. I realise this hurts certain arcetypes but they will still have a place in standart Magic.
"If we got another... Birthing pod" well, Kenobi...
Personally I've taken to adding teferi to my previously mono blue tempo deck, for the simple reason that as soon as I drop it the opponent concedes to avoid playing against a teferi deck. Take that aggro players.
I love best-of-one format. I have very young twins. I can't always dedicate an hour for one best-of-3 game. I draft and play sealed a lot. I think they nailed Bo1 in limited. Sure, mana screw still happens, but you get 3 loses. In draft, sideboard means a lot less than other formats. Exception to changing decks in a sealed tournament. That's just fun, but an acceptable loss to me.
? Arena just anounced that Best of 3 will be available in ranked and still very much supported....

Plus it's kinda convoluted in comparison. You have to know about it outside of the game, it's not super coherent as to how a sideboard works and should be supported to say, a Hearthstone player just coming to MTGA. The games tutorials and such should really support it more.
I remember the Brady Bunch
The specific name for Magicfests may be bad, but I do think it was a good idea to change the name. The events need to portray themselves accurately, and since they aren’t exclusively the big competitive tournament, it’s better to make sure people know that. In my seven years of playing, I only found out last year or so (from one of your videos) that you could go to a GP and not play in the main event.
20 Land Burn is so broken right now; Spotlight was the worst idea ever.
Bo1 magicfest mythic championships. We hearthstone now
Prof! Ive Only been on arena a month and I went from gold 2 to platinum 2 in one day! The competition is fierce now. I lose to mono red if I don't get my turn 1 and 2 creatures. Could you guess what I play? Lol. I won't make you guess. Boro's aggro with midrange included. I bring 2 risk factors, 2 rekindling pheonix, a lyra dawnbringer, and a banefire. Ofc 4 history of benalia, 3 benalish marshal, and 4 heroic reinforcements. It's unbelievable how good it is. I have 1 lava coil, 1 clarion, 1 justice strike, and 4 conclaves for removal. My low end is 2 bodyguards, 3 skymarcher, 2 or 3 adantos, that's it.
Dear Prof, this is a really fun show. I would, however like to make one request. Is there any chance that you could either get a translator or have subtitles for your foreign co-host? As your typical American, I am monolingual and I would love to know what the other guy is saying. Thanks in advance!

RIP KCI
Eggs is a perfect deck to fishbowl. It's an amazing utility to show newer players what depths of intricacy are available and it is difficult to point to a different deck that is going to elevate a player's understanding of stack interactions and mechanical intricacies that are still basal enough to what they're familiar with in standard/draft/arena/casual, but can show them what the depths of formats like vintage and legacy can be capable of with enough ingenuity. Though once they 'get' the deck it's usefulness in the narrative kind of drops away. Honestly I don't think it should be banned even if it is a little bit sad to play against, but it's the same argument for people who whine constantly about their timmy cards getting counterspelled. "They're not playing magic the way I want to play magic, so they're bad and dumb and stupid and should have their cards taken away from them." That's how I see this argument if I'm being totally disingenuous with the maturity of the opposition. Don't ban KCI, unban twin, unban pod. Unban the things that can help police and shake up modern.
Modern needs Force of Will.
"We don't want best of one in paper, because you will buy less paper boosters" - case solved :)

I'm all for different art on cards but I wish they'd reprint the old art occasionally so that people do have a choice to play with the old art. There are some old arts I like better but they are so much more expensive. I also think it is good to not have too many so you just can't tell what card it is anymore.

My take on the bo1 vs bo3 in arena/paper. I think bo1 would be terrible in paper, mainly because everything takes longer: organizing people, moving them around, shuffling before the match, etc. Instead in arena you can just queue repeatedly so loosing a bo1 with a terrible draw doesn't feel as bad: I didn't invest time getting to a venue, searching for my table, greeting my opponent, shuffling, etc. In arena I don't mind just loosing a game because I didn't invest much in getting to play that game. I think this will be exacerbated when the game releases in android/iOS
Is Prof giving us the finger at 8:50 ? :P

everyone make sure to hold up your blood moons tonight to empower them
omg Risk Factor is my favorite card too! i use an izzet deck, but i cant get out of bronze x) i asked my bf for a playset of Risk Factor for Valentines day
While I wold certainly prefer bo3 for any competitive MTG, I really like bo1 for the same reason I like playing with my friends. It is fun and simple, just like your first games of magic should be. I sent bo1 as the kitchen table magic, great for introducing the game, even if it is not the most competitive format. Edit: responding a bit to the "why are we chasing a dumed down version?" I believe the answer is just to look at how many play magic at home vs casual tournament vs pro. Bo1 is for that first group, the players that are either new or just don't want to deal with side boarding and build the optimal Deck. It is for those that just want to sit down with a friend and play a quick game for fun and for Arena it is for those that might (like me) not live in a city where are can do that without a 1 and a half hour drive to and than back from my LGS. I wold say removing bo1 wold be like saying that you are going to remove kitchen magic and welcome games/events. Bo1 is not played to be competitive, it is played to be fun. Edit 2: "why are they making that mistake on there digital platform?" One thing, barrier to entry. If I am playing MGT in person I ether have been convinced by a friend or I have went through the the truble of figuring out where my LGS is and then entering the event myself. In the first case, my friend will help me into the game and in the second the LGS will. With Arena I might start playing knowing no one that even knows what magic is. The client needs to act as that introduction and then needs to be rewarding to play on its own. I have had multiple friends that know I play and now, with no promt from me, have asked about Friday night games and they did so because Arena was fun on its own, with no help, for a new and casual player. The bo1 is there as the stepping stone so that you don't have to be a pro to start having fun. Edit 3: is this not also addressed by the fact that they are adding bo3 to ranked in the next session? They announced that in a resent update if I am not horribly mistaken
You are The best mtg youtube chanell!
