    The problem with the current hype cycle is that it makes the release date of a product feel like the END of its lifecycle rather than the BEGINNING. Usually it's not as blatantly obvious as it was with Modern Horizons, but it would be nice to actually get to USE our toys before we have to cast them side to buy new toys.

    It did get a reprint in modern masters and take a spot in my booster box as one of the "value" cards in the box, only to get banned a month later. So there's that, but overall there were plenty of ways to deal with it, especially at the modern play level. It could have been banned when it was in standard, and I wouldn't have argued. Saying a card breaks the metagame at a modern level is a pretty high credit to give Splinter Twin. I want Deathrite Shaman back too.

    It suddenly dawned on me why fatigue is kicking in harder: it's the removal of blocks. Back when there were two sets per block, the second set would be smaller and have less hype, save for a handful of cards with that could see play beyond limited. It was less exciting and had fewer cards, since it was more of an extension of the set currently in play. Overall, I think the current block set is better for quality of cards and interesting game play, but it means that if you're sick of a current set, you now only have to wait three months instead of six.

  • @MemoryLaneWizard

    @MemoryLaneWizard

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think that the end of blocks likely played a role too. But also the fact that Modern Horizons was mostly new cards - for Masters sets we knew that we would get 100% reprints - and if you did not care for draft, you would just buy singles. No one would get super stressed over Karn being reprinted in Ultimate Masters - it would make it temporarily more affordable, yes, but it not would change formats or create new decks. In Modern Horizons the preview season was much more tense because there a load of new cards as well as cards being brought into Modern - which fed into more speculation and buyouts - which is, at least for me, the most tiresome thing about preview seasons.

  • @sjcak

    Content creators feel the effects of over-hype more than anyone, and so for you this effect is most prominent. Most standard players won't care about Masters / Horizons sets; drafters don't care about Commander pre-cons; Commander players don't care about the vast majority of cards printed, but rather focus in on legends or cards with unique effects. However, because the audience of TCC is made up of all of these players, if you ignore anything that WotC produce, then you "let down" these groups. For an average player, of which I consider myself, the release schedule is fine - there's lots of stuff coming out, but I'm only interested in some of it.

  • @coolzog

    @coolzog

    I would suggest most players play more than one format. I play standard, but I also play EDH, modern and legacy. 6-7 sets a year + Commander/spellbook etc. is too much. They need to go back to 4.5 sets a year (4 standard sets + a supplemental set every 2 years) with yearly commander precons. I'm fine with core sets having more reprints in them. The issue is Wizards has been pretty terrified of doing this since putting thoughtseize in standard and warping the format. I don't know why they kept saying in this video that "nothing has changed" in terms of how many sets are released. Clearly more sets are released/year now vs. 6+ years ago. Especially since they started making 1-2 masters sets + a supplemental set + commander set per year, in the last couple years.

I’m thrilled with the flood of new cards (despite slivers and omnath looming over me with recent and incoming cards) but most cards get noticed and then immediately forgotten. I’ve looked at so many spoilers upon spoilers for Modern Horizons and Core 20 recently that despite some amazing cards being available, I’ll only ever remember a handful of cards from each set until I’m reminded of them again. There’s simply too much going on to properly appreciate any of it.

    I think Ixalan was a good gateway into Commander with the tribal focus offering a clear way to build decks and some decent commanders for those decks. My Orzhov vampire deck was my go to standard deck and it led me to create my prised Edgar Markov deck as I already had many materials for it. A friend of mine at the time did the same with his Dinosaur deck and a few people bought a Kumena off of me for merfolk.

Before it used to be a simple three sets, core set, and special summer set that was usually a masters or conspiracy-type set. That's pretty much it not including supplimentary products. But in 2018 alone, just counting actual set releases there was; Rivals of Ixalan, Masters25, Dominaria, Battlebond, Core2019, Guilds of Ravnica, and Ultimate Masters. Last time I checked seven full set releases is more than the usual five. Guild kits are great supplementary products. I started in the middle of ravnica allegiance, my first product was a Domri Planeswalker deck, then I fell in love with commander and I ramped into a commander gruul deck with a Gruul guild kit and an aminatou Commander Deck precon, which I just took all the mana ramp and utility lands from. Now, about 7 months later, I have a fun and pretty good Varina, Lich Queen commander deck and a janky jund commander deck. The Commander pre-con and the guildkit were the best purchases I made on top of moving to buying specific singles and flicking through binders in my LGS. I bought a challenger deck even though I don't play standard, that was a waste of money for me. I bought a ravnica allegience bundle but you know what, I should have bought another commander pre-con, I would have more of the cards I want for building a better commander deck. Core Set's are also loads of fun for me, because I get to expand my collection evenly rather than focusing everything into a specific deck or theme too early on. This year, I plan to buy one of every commander deck. More deck variety in my playgroup will add a lot to the strategy and politics of my FNM.

With the frequent releases i don't have the time to get attached to the new cards which feels wrong to me.

    I don't remember produce schedule in the past . . . but since December of 2018, these are the products so far : Ultimate Masters, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark, Challenger Decks and Modern Horizon. That is 5 products within 7 months, not to mention Signature Spellbook Gideon releases this week, Core 2020 prerelease is next week. I think something is wrong with the release schedule. Thankfully Commander products are 2 months away and we get some sort of breathing room.

    I think the problem is that the preview season is two weeks and ends with the LRR PPR and then there is a week gap for prerelease and another week gap before the cards are actually released... I think you need to get rid of some of that dead space.. getting rid of the week between the PPR and prerelease or making it a release weekend sealed event and move draft weekend the week after the set is released.. this will allow for an extra week or two between sets and products and might reduce the product fatigue.. I dont think the problem is too many sets, but to much time between previews and release

    a while ago when the War Novel came out I wrote up a thing that talked a lot about the problems with it and what lead into it. One of the major problems was spoilers, having the story spoiled ahead of time. The reason I bring this up is I was thinking about how spoilers used to be. Originally there'd be samples in magazines and some previews in duelist and the like. Then the internet took off and so did content creators a few spoilers here and there, a few rares and flashy cards sent out to some content creators and the site would spoil maybe 1 card a day. Then somewhere around the prerelease we'd get slapped wtih the full spoiler seeing a couple hundred new cards at once. a few years ago WOTC began amping up the number of early spoilers both wtih themselves and content creators, and now we get a lot of cards every day and know the entire set a week before the prerelease. So instead of a huge set drop and a lull we get a steady feed. a large part of this is presentation.

    Even with the oversaturation and fatigue being a thing, I think WotC's in this weird place where if they were to backpedal at all, it'd cut into their numbers so much that Hasbro might take issue with it. Gosh there's just so many moving parts and it's difficult.

    Another issue is the less reprints the more cards to discuss. Also they need to have a recursion period between pre-release and next set spoilers like you suggested but also a shorter preorder time period. Have preorders start and end within a week, two days after spoilers stop so there is a day to discuss. They want preorders and the entire time they start a preorder to when it's released you are hyped. Rather than having time to discuss if it is a good set to buy. I remember some sets I wouldn't preorder because the set was bad. Now they hype it in a fast wave to guarantee orders because sometimes it'll be sold out otherwise

  • @Zetimenvec

    I think the major difference between a masters and a horizon set is that horizons has new cards that are injecting into modern and shaking things up, where as a masters set only served the purpose as draft fodder and making existing cards more accessible. There wasn't fatigue with a masters set because you were already familiar with every card in the masters set. So when Modern masters 3 came out on March 17th 2017, you were already familiar with the cards in it, it didn't encroach on you absorbing new cards in Amonkhet that were released on April 22nd 2017. I also kind of think that in general when they have a standard set with a non-standard set being released within 30 days of each other, they should release the non-standard set afterwards, not before.

    As a player who is interested in Standard and Modern, I watch all the sets and spoilers for sets that go into those formats, but I really just focus on modern playability (in general), and look to see if the standard format is one I'm interested in playing (i.e. is my style of deck particularly strong). Everything else I just kind of miss. I don't really play limited, because then I would have to read common spoilers. I have an EDH deck, but only one, and I don't even get to take it for a spin very often, so I only check every few months for updates on cards for EDH. Even then I feel pretty overwhelmed, especially with WAR->MH1, since so much in modern seems to have changed. I'm not even sure what I want to pick up because it seems like next week it could just drop out of the format to the next hyper linear deck. Maybe my mistake is loving fair, 1-for-1 magic, but having new degenerate stuff every set wears me out, Wizards knows I only get a 15 card sideboard, right?

    My product to cut is super easy: Cut the damn yearly commander and move it back to being part of the special products like it started. When it was every 2 or 3 years it was easy to get them and they had time to plan them and make them well. They should go back to that, and just make them available for the like 2 years and then if you want to collect all 4 or 5 they make, it's not so difficult, and it reduces the number of products. I love commander, but a yearly product was always a bad idea, at least one of the scale they do it. If it was like 2 precons a year, it would be much more manageable. But the absolute refusal to print needed cards like fetches and shocks, like wurmcoils and hard to get legendaries, on top of that just makes these products as they currently are a problem over all. Do them less, do them better.

    A big issue in discontinuing a seasonal set would be the issue of increasing print runs to meet demand that might not exist past a few months. That would saddle LGS's and Big box stores with lots of products that are simply not in demand anymore. They would also have to modify the standard rotation schedule.

    This always happens around the summer sets; there's always an influx of product that overwhelms. However the opposite is true around the winter sets where everything feels barren. As someone who plays almost exclusively standard, and on very rare occasions some kitchen table magic with friends, I don't feel especially fatigued by everything. From my point of view I get my four standard sets a year, and then a supplemental set that I still get hyped for and excited by the previews and then just never play. The Modern reprint sets and all the precon stuff just whooshes by me. I think for the superfans who have their fingers in every bit of Magic things might be a little more hectic, but for the more focused people it's not as bad, and that probably goes for content creators who focus on specific things, too. Specifically this summer, with M20 coming like a week after Modern Horizons spoilers ended there was a really small gap. They almost certainly could've gotten more of a gap in there by shifting Modern Horizons back a bit. Or maybe even forward a way, come out in August, since in my mind I think Core Sets have slightly less to talk about and process than a block set. Or a...a non-core set, whatever the block sets are called now that there's no blocks.

    I think 6 main releases per year *with new cards* (or a new draft format) would be ideal. January - Winter Standard set April - Spring Standard set May/June - “Innovation” draft set (Masters, Horizons, Battlebond, Un-set, etc.) July - Core set September/October - Fall standard set November - Commander precons I do think the spacing is an issue - don’t spoil the next set until after the previous set has been released for at least 3 weeks. Give each set some time to shine. Supplemental products with reprints only (Challenger Decks, Guild kits, Signature Spellbook, etc.) don’t add to my fatigue, so they can stay as is. Also, they don’t have a spoiler season - they just get spoiled all at once. So they can add to hype without interfering with spoiler season. Announcing these products works as a great “drop-in” during times that would otherwise be bereft of new spoilers. Finally, I wish the ratio of new cards to reprints in the Core set were adjusted. I feel like Core sets should be 60% reprints and 40% new cards. While not every product is for every player, there are some players who want every product. It’s a collectible card game, so that’s not surprising. An every two month schedule of releases that include new cards gives players and content creators appropriate breathing room to allow for hype to build for each set.

    I've always felt that Wizards prints too many sets per year. I would like to see a main set (Lager set with more cards), and then one expansion to that main set per year. I think you keep Core and the "Special" set, but my answer would be to reduce the number of Standard sets per year. (2 per year, One large, one smaller.)

    I for one am absolutely exhausted by the amount of new cards coming out. There are so many that I want to try out in EDH decks, for example walkers from WOTS, that I haven't got hold of because I simply don't know if it's worth it when in two weeks a better card might be spoiled. I have finite (read: very limited) resources and it is major bad feels dropping cash on something that is suddenly outdated. Plus on a slightly different line I don't feel like said cards are holding trade value - I try to exchange what have up until now been great cards in my decks but all everyone wants is the newest stuff that they themselves haven't been able to justify buying!

    Supplementals have been around for quite some time. Beatdown, Deckmasters, and Portal were supplementals that weren't necessarily Standard legal. But, they were just cranked out more seldom. With a few exceptions (looking at you Time Spiral/Lorwyn/Coldsnap/Tenth Standard, although this no longer looks too outlandish with the current Standard), Standard tends to be, at most, 8 sets with a bit under 2,000 different cards and about 10 different non-evergreen keyword mechanics.

I only just got around to updating my commander decks with War of the Spark cards, and I've already got to consider what of Modern Horizons I'll need, as well as Core20, as well as whatever Commander 2019 is going to consist of and whatever sets they'll squeeze in between August and December.

    I think there is an underlying, fundamental problem here: As more and more magic cards get released, each card has more potential interactions, thus each card becomes more complex to evaluate and build around. With every newly released card, old cards can suddenly spike - both in value and in playability - and create new strategies. If Wizard is speeding up the release of products (or just isn't slowing down), it will be harder and harder to evaluate cards and utilize them to their full potential. I think a solution would be to include more reprints in sets, because they are already better known and take less time to comprehend.

    I started playing just as Commander precons, Masters sets, and "innovation sets" all transitioned from being released annually instead of every other year. Then, on top of that, Masters sets started coming out basically twice a year these last two years leading up to Ultimate, and Unstable was yet another extra booster product. You guys, I have so many unopened booster boxes because I haven't had the time and energy to put together drafts. Oh, and Commander should definitely move back to the November slot instead of the August slot it got pushed into a couple of years ago. The summer is too packed with a new major release (not even counting the spellbook) every month from May to the fall set prerelease by the end of September.

    The difference is the supplemental sets are appealing to a broader audience this year. Typically those sets would appeal to subsets but now that the modern masters has new cards and the core is getting way more CMDR level cards it's blending everything into a want for every player and having an additional expansion to budget for is hard to do. Not to mention the fall out of if I forget some mythic or rare that turns out later to be amazing for a format I could be sol when it's now 20+ dollars even though normally I wouldn't miss it because I'd have more time to ruminate on it.
