Best time to burn in those neural pathways is when you're a kid. Kids that I know don't typically have a lot of extra cash... So no, don't save up for something twice the cost. Get started with what you can afford now while you're interested. I have cheap and not so cheap guitars but I like this flood of inexpensive guitars and equipment! 👍

It was fairly easy to pick out the Fender. The chime and the clarity was easily the best among the lot. I have them in this order if I have to rank them: 1. Fender 2. Firefly 3. Tease 4. Squier Debut For the money if stock then Firefly all day long. I believe you mentioned you paid around $650 for the Fender used, and for that money, it would be Fender. The quality on the Fender, in my experience, while not perfect, it is consistently much higher than what people mention on the internet boards, and I'd gladly pay the extra $300 for the better QA, electronics, pickups and just overall ease of modification down the line.

For chording, I know I didn’t choose the Debut as the Fender… I believe I had the Firefly as the Fender. I did get the MIM as the Fender when you did the bridge solo notes but I think I also picked the Tease one also as the Fender which was not correct. The bottom line is I think you proved it’s a close call and without top line Fender pickups I think it’s hard to actually pick out a Fender from non-Fender. Frankly I’m not sure most would be able to pick out Fenders from non-Fenders

Actually come to find out the pickups in the MIM had been upgraded. They are the Pure Vintage 59's. That's a $300 upgrade.

They all sounded great. It's a beautiful Mexican Stratocaster, but no, it really didn't stand out to me. The Firefly and Squier Debut definitely hold their own.

Leave any of these on my porch tomorrow and I'd be happy with it and have no trouble making good music. They are all capable of putting out some good sounds, some being stronger than others in subtle ways. Subjectively, I was surprised how much I liked the Squier Debut with the Wilkinsons. None of these guitars sounded bad though and I just don't hear the Fender as being three or four times as good as the others. Very interesting. I'll leave it at that.

All sound nice but different. I’m not sure there is such a thing as cheap sounds and I had a course in acoustics when I was studying physics at the University. Guitarist have the craziest beliefs. You are the perfect person to help with my question: how do all 3 necks differ in size, cut and fret size? Thanks.

I am thoroughly impressed with that Squier, it sounded good each time with the black bar. The Fender would come second as it also sounded great, but not quite as consistently stellar. The Tease doesn't sound so good on the bridge pickup, but REALLY nice on the middle pickup. The Firefly just isn't for me. At the end of the day, it's down to the pickups and wiring, that Squier just sounds so damn good regardless of price. I'm ashamed to say I could not locate the humbucker, I guess I'm no Rob Chapman. Any beginner with access to Amazon should definitely consider a Squier Debut however, it easily sounds as good as a Classic Vibe

Funny that you mentioned the humbucker, because honestly, if I didn't know which one it was, I would have had trouble ID'ing too. It's interesting because a lot of people seem to be gravitating toward the Squier. The pickups aren't stock, but they seem to pick it out as being the better sounding. I actually found it to be too bright and "stratty" sounding. But then again, it IS a strat, so maybe other people like that chimey tone.

@@JayceAllanGuitar I like chimey to a degree, as long as the bridge isn't shrill like a lot end up being, but there are options that avoid that

That American strat has more resale value than the mim strat
