check out Tom Horsman's video on this same grill. He likes adding a gasket. I did not find adding a gasket helped me... almost made it worse. If it is a light leak... buy some cheap fatty cuts of meat like pork butt and pork belly and do some longer smokers with those... and it might seal it up as well. then don't clean the lid where it sits on the kettle.

I got rid of my 22 inch WSM because of the same reason. The upside down rain gutter design encourages filling the bowl full of rainwater. You would think one of the designers would have looked at the kettle and said "Why are we changing this?" I have a Ugly Drum Smoker that I put together that actually cooks better than the WSM. I like the kettle and the slow n sear . Definitely a better and more versatile way to cook.

After getting this, I would go with the bale on the side, vs the hinge. The hinge just feels kind of strange the way they have it laid out. It just feels out of place. Perhaps I will get used to it? Either way, they should have included a handle on the top, just in case you want to go hingeless. It is pretty much useless when not hooked up to the hinge.

So it is not just me... i am in the process of getting a lid holder and a lid handle to just remove the hinge. In the end the wobbly lid, the bad closing etc were just too annoying, especially when you do a 6 hour low and slow cook, any leakage on the sealing of the lid makes temperatures really hard to control. I liked your tip though, tried it but, although it is better, i will just go to a hand held lid by ordering the Weber 67570 Handle Kit Black W/Logo M/T Charcoal 19 and drilling 2 holes in the lid (and painting the holes). Add the Weber lid slide aside attachment and it works like a non hinged mastertouch. Yes it will void warranty, but all they do is send a wobbly lid as replacement (i even received the bottom and several hinges). It is just a design fault. What the hinge misses is a contra pull in the last 10% of it's downward movement and more width for more stability.

I think after seeing other grills with a hinge weber thought they would have one. I'm glad i don't have a hinge. I don"t usually run for the next latest upgrade. From all the coments, seems like a lot of frustration just for a damn hinge! I'm happy with my "Master Touch" + i got the rotisserie rig + it works great. The ring doesn't fit perfectly but you can't beat ribs cooked this way.As the fat renders, it keeps the outside moist. You don't really need to spritz them. On the other hand, they're more likely to lose business to third party add-ons that do the same thing as their ring/diffuser (e.g., the Kettle Zone, or maybe even the Kettle Joe slowroller, which might be coming out stand-alone soon).
