Did Hogue Kill the Benchmade 940???

The Hogue Mysto seemingly has all the trapping of a knife designed to take down the Benchmade 940 Osborne.
Milled titanium scales…Check!
CPM Magnacut Steel…Check!
Styling…Check!
Blade to Handle Ratio…Check!
A better cross-bar (Axis) Lock…Check!
But does one flaw kill the whole thing? Watch to find out!

Just bought one of these from the Hogue factory outlet. As of march 2024 the clip/drop point models have fixed the closed finger catching on the blade issue. I cannot speak for the tantos. Mine is one of the most perfectly machined blades I've ever felt.

Sadly, BenchMade has made a LOT of enemies tin the Knife world lately. Particularly their customer's. I am rather partial to a model made by Hogue designed by my old friend Allen E. KnifeMaker

Great plunge & sharpening choil. There is a new knife called the Kraken with virtually the same design aspect of the 940 with full titanium scales that are able to put on and off with your hands & no hardware. They are held in place with strong magnets. The blade is same as the 940 but better geometry & plunge grind/choil. Oh and it is by far more cheaper . Look it up.

Thanks! And you may be right that it is a non-issue after all sharpening or two. I did find the cross-bar lock detect to be a little lighter than benchmade’s is but most of my other hogues are not like that so I can’t be sure it isn’t a QC issue rather than a design issue.

Magnacut isn’t overblown IMO just that most manufacturers haven’t gotten the HRC up to snuff. I’ve heard Hogue does it well though. At 63HRC it’s the best out there IMO. Same reason I don’t chase M390 anymore because most of it is crap, I agree S30V or S35VN turns out better most times

  • @michaell397

True that! M390 has to have close attention and handling in heat treat. it doesn't do well in batches, much less on an industrial scale. KnifeMaker

I want this knife so bad. I actually feel like they take Benchmade's good ideas and make them better, but people don't freak out about them like they do the Benchmade. Like you I hope they fix the knife. If they do I have it in the crosshairs.

how do you think the black coating will hold up? I like the contrast. Also, considering its a "collector" knife they should have offered a cover for those screw holes for the side the clip isnt screwed into. additionally, recessed screws arent a must for functioanlity but wouldve looked a lot better. In regards to the tip sticking out when closed, do you know if they fixed that yet?

From a practical point of view it'll most probably perform just as well if not better than a 940, but for collectors it'll take 2 decades and lots of limited editions or dealer exclusives before this could come close to the 940. For now I'll stick to the 940 😉. Thanks for sharing!

No disrespect, but I don't care what Benchmade calls it. It isn't a tanto anything, (no disrespect, but it isn't a sheep's foot either. It is a Spay blade. Charts showing the traditional blade shapes are easy to find. then again the CRK isn't a Drop point either. Its' a clip point. It matters not whether it has a swedge ground into it or not. A true drop point has the last quarter of the tip dripped down rather quickly to glide over the internals of a game animal to prevent it from rupturing the internals.(Designed by R.W. Loveless years ago along with the tapered tang in the knife. Both classics today. But then again, the designer of the 940 and the CRK were both originally from other countries so what do they know about traditional blade shapes in Europe and the U.S. They simply made the nameu up ignoring both true tradition and the obvious uses of such blades. Nothing wrong with well heat treated 154-CM. It was first brought to us by my mentor R.W. Loveless and his knives stood the test of time. When it became scarce, He and Jim went to Hatachi and convinced the m to produce a equivalent steel, ATS-34. He later brought us RWL-34 (Robert Waldorph Loveless), and later a version with a little Vanadium in it called BG-42. His knives are today the most highly valued collected knives in the World.
