Yeah it sucks when you lose your favorite knife. Lost my 940 took me 3 years to pull the trigger on another 940. Went threw so many knives till i realized. 940 is simply elite.

I like your observations on "functional sharpness." I kinda think that I've been seeing that with my last 2 knives. The knives of my youth would start sharp, and soon get really, really dull. Those were inexpensive knives of unknown steel, and Victorinox, and Buck, and Case. The change from really sharp to butter-knife dull, happened fast. So I got used to that pattern of edge retention. I've got a D2 knife, that starts so super sharp that I'm gloating. And dang it, I lose the scary-sharp surprisingly soon. It won't shave hair. It won't push-cut phone book paper. However, it stays way sharper, way longer, than my past knives would. It has yet to get butter-knife dull. As would a Swiss Army knife, or a Leatherman Crater in 420hc. My own definition of edge retention is shifting. Functional sharpness is a good term for it.

My gf and her son just got me one for father's day. It's in the house... I just can't use it yet. I'm super excited. I've always been a huge knife guy. (And watch guy) but I've never had a really nice pocket knife before. Most of mine have been $20-50. So I'm pumped to have something to this caliber. Already looking at custom titanium spacers and pivots to make it mine.

I came home to find mine delivered and I love it! I have the same color and I’ve been cutting things with it right out of the box. All I did was add gunny oil to the pivot. I stropped it in case of a burr and now I’m just having fun with it. I cut some dry branches also maple and it did well. I like the fact that you cut paper then wood and cardboard.

I recently purchased the 940-01. It was duller than a butter knife when I received it, but I sharpened it up and kept roughly the factory angle of 19-20 deg and it's now one of the sharpest blades I own. The s90v functions similar to yours just more extreme on both ends of the spectrum. Thanks for the test.

I’ll tell you what. For 2 years I’ve been in between the bugout and the 940. I’m quite the penny pincher and when it comes to a pocket knife I wana take everything into consideration as far as my needs for one but after watching this video of you using it the way I would use a pocket knife you bet I’m going with the 940 now. Thank you so much for this and now I’m guna pick up one tomorrow buddy lol

Really love the 940. I'm very late to the party. Got my first one (a 940-2) only last month (08/19/2023) and last Saturday (09/09/2023), I got a second one. How fortunate of me to be able to snag a Blade HQ exclusive 940BK-2004. The one with jade G10 and CPM-M4 steel and I live in the Philippines. I believe that exclusive came out in 2020. I also bought a 945 with the aluminum handle scales.

serrated edges are made to saw not just cut through....best advice I ever got regarding serration came from a guy who made his living on a boat.....if you just have to rip through rope with a saw action (not with a board to cut on....serration is the way to go....but it is a specialized need, for edc, I'd go plain edge.

Love your reviews...look forward to each one. Osborne did the knife world a great favor with this ingenious and attractive design. Small, thin and lightweight in stature it takes up minimal pocket space-while giving you a 'full length' cutting edge. What's not to like-the design was ahead of its' time. Combined with a premium steel it checks all the boxes-and even at its' price point I consider it a value knife because of what it is. I'm with you-and agree it is one if not the best folder I own-and I own many! Congrats on the new 940...kudos to the individual who gifted it to you...there are still some decent folks out there!

s90V is the same way but even more so, probably double the usable edge. It has to do with the vanadium carbides being harder than the surrounding steel, and the steel will kinda of default to a toothy edge as the surrounding steel wears away and the carbides stick out. Bucks S30v is on steroids with the BOS heat treatment. I work in a body shop and cut sheets of sand paper, zip ties, cardboard, open boxes, etc. everyday and my buck vantage pro kept a usable edge for over a month.

I have a 940-1 clone. Carbon fiber and all. 20 dollars all in. And I have Benchmade knifes. But to me I'd rather trash a 20 dollar knife. And if someone decided that they wanted it more. Hell it's only 20 bucks.

I'm confused. At the start of the vid you sliced though paper easily, but after cutting rope, you say the blade developed a burr it didn't have at the beginning. Is that even possible? I was under the impression that a burr is created during sharpening rather than cutting. Apologies if I'm wrong.

  • @whyFINAL

i think there was some bur from the begining... but straight, very thin like edge on the razor. with paper it was not a poblem, but then it rolled on the harder materials.. quick resharp and stroping would help to fix that ... if i am correct.

It's still the best design for EDC out there in my opinion. I could care less whether or not the blade will shave hairs or cut paper. Remember, if you don't have a knife on you, your truck keys usually end up doing whatever you need a cutting instrument to do... 😆😉👍
