Hogue Mysto: unbiased overview and hard test.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was hoping for a top tier EDC pocket knife when I ordered this knife. Unfortunately, this is not what I got. I mean, it looked great on paper: magnacut blade, titanium handle, milled design, cross-bar lock and a deep-carry pocket clip!
One thing for sure: this is a heavy duty knife and it has potential. That's as much praise as I could possibly give at this time.
Disclaimer: this video is for entertainment purposes only. The tests shown in this video may lead to voiding the factory warranty and damage to the knife as well as personal injury. I don’t recommend you do anything you see here.

    Thanks so much for the shoutout! Great review on this one and thanks for testing the safety of the drop point. Great to see that the production drop point version doesn’t have the same issue as the pre-production tanto one. I hope they fixed that in the production run on the tanto.

    Thank you for what you're doing in the testing of knives/locking mechanisms. I appreciate it as an amateur engineer and 51-year-old folding knife enthusiast and lifelong anti-bladeplay advocate . Bill McHenry and Jason Williams, inventors of the Axis lock, took great pride and obsession in their lock. The "bar lock," as it has become known, has become popular since the patent expired as we all know. The problem is, even with Benchmade's newer offerings, that the geometry between the lockbar, stop pin, and blade pivot/tang ramp (the critical triangle) has lost its mojo on some newer knives featuring this lock. The Axis bar is designed with the perfect spring tension to absorb the "micro-slop" within this critical triangle. My early 2000's Benchmades and even the Griptilian's and Mini-Grip's of recent years subscribed to the critical triangle mojo. They tested their knives and realized that a softer 310 or 400 series steel for the liners was the way to go in conjunction with the critical triangle. Other models (and newer BM models) from other manufacturers do not. My first clue was when I saw no room for wear being allowed on the liners of newer BM models, as if the Axis bar moving all the way forward and hitting the forward liner wall was a good thing. It's not a good thing. The next was seeing the stop pin gradually moving backward on the knife for whatever reason. The most current is the advent of gratuitously large and sloppy pivot pins. It's like the game where you whisper something in 12 people's ears and by the end it's not the original message. Admittedly, I'm a complete Benchmade fanboy and have been since the 80's. I'd love to see them reclaim what has become somewhat lost in translation. Again, thank you for what you do. Subscribed.

    Sorry to nerd on, but the tang ramp angle plays a big part in this dynamic - obviously. As does the choice of materials. Titanium liners on "bar locking" knives is a gamble, as 300 and 400-series stainless steels can be hardened. Given that most recent incarnations have stainless-series liners, I've got to take a hard look at that critical triangle, especially the placement of the stop pin. Thanks again for entertaining my long post and for what you're doing. As a relentless tinkerer, I plan to apply your modding advice to the locking block of my incoming MT Amphibian's Ram Lok as well, if it doesn't pass muster. I think they're on to something, though the early runs are always the betas. Much to buyer chagrin.

    Your deep dive section included a lot of interesting information and insight. Hate to say it, but I feel like I've given up on most US knife manufacturers. Quality control on my favorite companies (Spyderco and ZT) seems to have dipped in my experience and their prices to increase every year. It's not inherently their fault as you mentioned, but definitely it leaves a bad taste.

    They look like the same studs that are on the Deka. They are removable with and a lot of force, plus you may need to heat it up. I used two small vise grips. I used gorilla tape on the teeth of the pliers, but it ended up chewing up the studs anyway. They used red Loctite so it took a lot of time and effort to get it off. I eventually replaced it with a bugout thumb stud which works perfectly. Those Hogue thumbstuds are kinda sharp

    I’m not sure at what temperature MagnaCut starts to change colour, it may be pretty low 130-200F. I know that most stainless high alloy steels air quenched so it may be ok. Carbon and tool steels act differently bc they have more carbon not in solution. Ask @edcandlace how to deal with this, she sharpens professionally surely she sees this all the time. She commented on this thread, easy to find

  • @sheltermonkey6065
    @sheltermonkey60655 ай бұрын

    Did you disassemble it to see what is causing the scraping sound? You might have just gotten a flawed one. Hogue probably did some testing of the model before it was released. I assume Benchmade tests pretty thoroughly before model releases... though sometimes problems slip through, like the Adamas lock issue shown by DBK. Cold Steel does testing too, though while cheesy, is worthwhile. Lynn Thompson has often talked about how they would test each batch they received from Taiwan before approving them. Kershaw's testing is more lacking, and lot of Chinese manufacturers such as Kizer don't really do any testing at all. Their goal is to get new models out the door as quickly as possible. If we take Kershaw as an example, they have 2 designers on staff and maybe 1 "engineer lite". The engineer is probably getting paid considerably less than engineers in other industries. And as you mentioned, the companies don't have QC programs.

    Personally I have NO problem with a knife failing that spine whack test on the second or third go-round. Yes, the lock should survive one accidental smack on the spine, which is rare in the real world but can happen, but if you are repeatedly and consecutively smacking the spine of the blade ... you probably shouldn't be using knives (or operating heavy equipment).
