Blasphemy! 😉 Why didn't Ford use economies of scale to have Jaguar and Ford Australia co-develop an updated 4.0L inline-six? 🤔 Would an engine cheap enough to install in a reasonably priced Ford Falcon not be smooth or sophisticated enough for a Jaguar S-Type or XJ?

I have a 1995 XJR with the 4.0l supercharged 6 cylinder in turquoise paint at 160,000miles has been the best sport sedan I have ever owned. Excellent engineering from Ford and Jaguar.

Had many Jags and loved them all! Never been let down by any of them. Better roadholding and ride than German barges which generally disappointed me so I always return to Jags.

The original XJ in fact was made from about 1968, not 1963. In 1963 the Mk2 was still very much alive.

I worked for Ford of Europe directly after the acquisition and was involved in some of the advice/consultancy in improving Jaguar. To see the before and after, there's no question that Ford improved Jaguar and the quality of the cars it produced. I have to acknowledge the pride the staff in Browns Lane had for the cars they built. It was a real eye opener when compared to the way Ford Dagenham workers viewed their jobs !

Good to hear that, from the horses mouth, so to speak! There were many British plants where the staff were more concerned with everything but the quality of work. Many reasons for that but it contributed to the death of the industry here.

One of my favorite and best ever cars. I had a XJ308 XJR. Did over 150k miles in it. Just couldn't bring myself to sell it. Very reliable really. Never had a better car for comfort and pace.

Without Ford money, Jag would have been in serious trouble, so Ford get a pass from me. Thanks Jack! 🙏🙏

We would have been out of business by 1993 had Ford not bought the Company in 1989. X300 was essentially Ford’s rationalizing the XJ40. Unfortunately, as time went on Ford’s bean counters squeezed the Jaguar out of Jaguar.

Two cars were too much Ford (X-Type & S-Type) Two cars were still very Jaguar (XJ & XK) Ford stumped up the cash for Jaguar to design and develop their own V8. They stumped up the cash for the aluminium X350 and X150 too.

@@lewis72 As I said, without Ford there would have been no Jaguar post '93, we couldn't have paid the warranty bill. That said, by 1998 there was less leather in an XJ8 than an Explorer Limited. Jac Nasser's bone-headed "synergies" and "cost gutting" ensured the S-Type was an ugly version of the Lincoln LS, or as one wag described it a "Taurus with a urinal strapped to the hood." Cheezy switchgear straight out of the rental lots, a center dash befitting a econobox, etc. The X-Type was an insult, but came out of a political problem for Ford when they planned to shutter the Halewood plant and its labor mess. Nasser decided Jaguar was to become a "volume brand", the Mondeo-by-any-other-name X-Type was hatched and the toilet bowl swirl began. The all-aluminum X350 was a dud, the XK was a dud and the brand was sold for virtual pennies to now be about one step from the rubbish bin of poorly managed British marques. As a JAguar fan since the 60s the whole shebang is heartbreaking.

Agreed.i bought an absolute minter for 3k with 65k miles and I look at other motorists in mondeos and vauxhalls that cost 5x that & am constantly amazed by how lovely it is

I picked up a 2006 jaguar xj8 originally to flip. I had no clue I would fall in love with this amazing car. Obviously my first jag but not my last.

I know that the common opinion is that the AJ6/16, x300 is more reliable than the later AJ-V8, x308 models but I'm not sure that I agree. My own XJ is an end of line '02 x308 and it's been flawless in the five years I've owned it. The troubles with the early 8 cylinder engines with plastic valve guides and Nikasil liners have been done to death at the time and ever since. The fact is that those early engines that suffered this issue in the XK8 especially have all gone to the great scrap yard in the sky and those that remain are tough and dependable units. Besides that, the later versions of AJ27 had all those issues dealt with at manufacture and the specialists now regard them as solid and reliable. My 97 XK8 has the early version and it's an original unit. Replaced timing tensioners with 3rd gen units and great compression as the Nikasil is still intact and performing well. The 5 speed HP box is the other weak link, but only if treated as 'sealed for life'. They're not and, just like any auto ever made, require oil and filter changes periodically. The boxes that fail do so as they aren't properly looked after. So, my considered opinion as the owner of an x308 is that the right car with a good history is every bit as good as the X300 and the interior ambiance is in a completely different league. Personally, I have no qualms in recommending them, providing you do your homework. Thanks for the video Jack - makes a change from the usual Italian stuff 👍

Not sure about plastic valve guides matey but was aware of plastic timing chain tensioner bodies that took a dump with disastrous consequences. I don't claim to be omniscient about such things though.

Absolutely agree. As a long time Jag nut and Jag club member the XJ308 series cars are well known to be the most reliable Jags of all. The two key issues are the plastic tensioner guides and the Nikasil bore lining. The tensioners were replaced with the metal version in July 2001 and no longer a problem. Anyone in the know if purchasing an early one will simply replace them if they haven't been done. The Nikasil issue happens only to some and Jag replaced engines where it occurred under warranty so if the car is not using oil now it is unlikely to ever be a problem. However this problem doesn't seem to arise here in Australia as our fuel is different. Due to our better climate rust isn't an issue and they are certainly better than earlier cars. Also the electricals are quite reliable here with just a few glitches. They are a complex luxury car and need good maintenance but I would trust one over a BMW or Merc equivalent of the time any day.

@@SirReginaldBlomfield1234 it’s generally the secondary tensioners up to the camshafts that give the problems. The bigger tensioners further down seem to be less problematic and tend to let go more gradually.

The pick of the crop are obviously the X308 XJR (100) and Daimler Super V8. And that headliner on the XJ6 ... it's just a pity that the owner didn't have it fixed because overall, the interior looks to be in quite nice shape.

I’ve got a ‘96 4.0 and it’s a blast to drive. Every outing feels like an event, and it’s the only car I’ve ever owned that actually gets compliments from both sexes.

The original xj6 went from 68 to 86 not 63.i adore the xj.have owned loads,the 40s,the 300s,the 308s and by fat the best of all the x350s.on my 2nd one,a superv8.superb.straight 6 is stronger engine but no where near as smooth and refined as the v8s.the v8s for me every time now.

I see HubNut installed the roof lining for that. 😁

Interesting that this was published on my 60th birthday! That said, I owned a '97 X300 3.2 Executive in BRG and I liked it so much I kept it 13 years. The only repairs were the timing chain tensioner (which was cheap) and the coils (which being by Lucas, were lousy). For the rest, no repairs over normal maintenance in well over a decade. Probably the cheapest car to maintain I ever owned.

I had an XJ40 and an XJ8 both superb cars. If you use the J-gate then it lifts up its skirts and turns into a real sports car and seems to shed weight and size. I remember chasing a Skyline through some country lanes in Oxfordshire and they were really surprised at how I kept up. Replaced my XJ8 with a BMW 640d Gran Coupe in 2018 because I couldn't find a late, decent low mileage XJR. Brilliant cars and I wish that Jaguar had stuck with that classic design and interior rather than styling which looks pretty much like anything else on the road today.

indeed, the "eurobox" style has made mist cars look bland and far too similar. Styling by wind tunnel.

I have a 3.2 straight 6, bought it 10 years ago, drove it back from spain recently with 2 adults and 2 very large dogs (90kg combined) plus luggage, nevermissed a beat, it has in all honesty been the best car I've had, only had issues with the air con in all that time, absolutely love it

So nice Austin Power's let you barrow his Jaguar.

There is something about the Union Jack that works so well as a paint job for a car.

I prefer the look of the late model year XJ40 with the Sovereign headlights. The wood and leather is better quality on the XJ40 too.

Growing up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and still here... a friend's Father had the 2 door, V12 Jaguar (lovely Car) and his Brother bought one as well. Every weekend both of them were on the driveway tinkering on those 2 Cars. After having many of the high horsepower American Made Cars from the mid 1980's to the mid 2000's I finally found a very nice 2002 X Type at Auction. It had an Accident and been written off but someone repaired everything an I think I paid $3,700 for it in 2014. Fast forward, it now has 152k km's on it and with minor work, still runs and drives like a dream. I love the Car you're driving, reminds me of the Austin Powers movie. lol. I had an X300 XJR for a few years. It certainly had its issues, but it was a lovely car to drive and had plenty of oomph from the SC 4.0L six.

Great content, try an xjr x300 as these are slightly tighter. A life long Jaaaaag fan, lockdown gave me the chance to whet my appetite and I love mine. X308 is bigger inside and as a 6.2 footer I may lean this way soon, but for bang for your buck, go for it. Thanks for the content and the next time I am in the UK with my german Jag, you can have the keys.

I had an xj6 4.0l for 10 years from 1993 followed a couple of years later by an xjr 4.2l for 14 years. Other than replacement of failed timing chains due to the plastic tensioners which was a manufacturers fault, no major repairs probably due to regular servicing in a specialist garage avoiding main dealer!... I did 250 000km in the xjr, now looking for something else: an Audi A8? Great cars!, no regrets with the jags. Only real weakness was body rust corrosion due to long hard winters where I live.

My father had a 1996 XJ Sport in black with cream interior in the early 2000's and it rode like a magic carpet and it looked like the Prime Minister had come to visit when it pulled up. Very nice car and someone else though so too when they decided to try and nick it. Unfortunately my father had removed the battery to recharge it in the garage so they left empty handed.

I am a jag fan. Unfortunately I have no owned or lived with one yet. I let a XJR version of that very car slip through my fingers a while back. I kick myself for not buying it as I do love an I6 with a blower. Very nice cars over all.

A friend had one that he wanted out of. He couldn't wait for me to raise money and put it through an online auction. During the auction I raised the money and the car sold. Luckily the high bidder did not pay and I got my XJR!

Fair assessment Jack and as you said a lot of car for the money and better built under Fords reign. A good read is Sir John Egan’s book ‘Saving Jaguar’ which tells how bad things got even before the XJ40. The one you do need to try is the last of the line all aluminium of this shape (the XJ350 I think) it might look the same but it’s a completely different car and a fantastic used buy and doesn’t rot (well even aluminium corrodes, but not as badly).

I still think the Series 1 XJ6 was the best looking of all. Later cars don't seem to have the same stance... I prefer the big grill too.

I love the 1 too (had a '79 2 so shan't complain).

The X300 was a darned good XJ in it's own right and much better than the XJ40. But the best? No chance. That prize is shared between the very first -XJ4 and the last - X351. The first because it was by Lyons, and the last because it was by someone who tried to think like Lyons.

I have a 3.2 just like that… but in a more subtle colour 🤣. And they can hustle and bustle if you prod them a little and work the J gate… although it doesn’t encourage that kind of behaviour. My friend couldn’t lose me in his e46 325ci back in the day, even down a dual carriageway he gave his e46 it’s all and he said “then I looked in the rear view mirror and there was your jag right on my tail” 🤣

I always loved the looks and the interior of those Jags. An absolutely classic design. They also offer a nice ride. Unfortunately the problem lies in reliability issues. Not so much in this gen though. In the early Eighties I got the chance to ride in a Daimler double six regularely. I loved to ride in the backseat of it. To me those cars are as British as a Mini or an Aston Martin.

This is my favourite modern XJ generation, the 6.0 Daimler V12 LWB version is gorgeous.

These jaguars are the best luxury value of the time period. Luxury very close to Bentley/Rolls

I had two, they were both challenging and it was rare to drive either without some stupid light come up on the dash. Disappointing.

The 4 litre V8 had some reliability issues. I remember one case in particular where the engine was bad as well as the used replacement. 95-97 with the 4 litre inline 6 we're my favorite of the era. We didn't get the 3.2 here in the States unfortunately. Thanks for sharing 👍

Only the first year or 2 with the nikasil liners which bmw also suffered from. After this was sorted the v8 was pretty sweet

In the 1970s I car pooled with a guy that owned a Daimler Sovereign v12. It was a real treat to drive to work in it. It seemed like whenever it was my turn to drive us to work (in my purple Mini) the Daimler would be going in for repairs. It was a beautiful thing but my friend was kept poor from keeping it running.

Ford did a fantastic job. My 2005 XJ8L had 340,000 carefree miles when I traded it off. The owners are often Turds who don't take proper care of them. All my BMW's were junk.

Got a XJ Sport 3.2 V8 , British Racing Green with sport black leather interior . A joy to drive in 1998 and even today . Very reliable and cheap for parts . Good to 150 mph I believe but I prefer to waft along . Everything works and passed the last 2 mots with minor advisories . Truly luxurious cars with pedigree and a great badge .

The XJ6 came out in 1968, not 1963. I remember it well as it moved Jaguar on a great deal from the ageing 240, 340 and 420 range all derived from the Mark 2 Jaguar.

I saw this car a few times in East Tilbury, then ebay. Looked in good condition. I had a 4,2 XJ6 with an overdrive switch on the manual gear stick, 17mpg on a very good day

The XJ300 was the best Jag. This is my 3rd one and I love every minute of owning it.

Ford saved Jaguar. I love the X300. Only 2 model years. You could get the inline 6 in the UK in the x350, which was a great match for the Aluminum body. The real one to have though is the X300 with the 12 cylinder.

Jack, apart from sitting in your own lounge room in your lovely recliner rocker chair, you'll not get a more silent and comfortable ride than an XJ Jaguar, the best by far.

Put a groovy baby sticker on it and wear some square frame glasses with 60s clothes and you’ll look as cool as Austin powers! 😅

I worked at Fords in the 90s. My take from the situation is that the luxury brand always loses its shine under the umbrella of a mass producer. The minute any Ford part gets interchanged into the jag it takes away any luxury and refinement. Shame really.

The only XJ I ever rode in was a friend's Series 1 4.2 automatic. It had the best ride of any car I've ever been in, with the possible exception of a Citroen CX or an XJS series one, pre the HE models. The aforementioned XJ owner has since and for many years owned a Series 3 4.2 as well as his old faithful Daimler V8, the mark 2 body shaped model. I do wonder how many folk would prefer an X350 for the aluminium bodywork's rust free benefits, even though the styling isn't nearly as attractive.

Your wrong about the debut of the original XJ6 Jack it was 1968 not 1963. Bank robbers were still using MK 2 Jags as get away cars in ‘63 😂 I’ve driven a ‘71 XJ12 which ran on carbs back in the day. That was smooth and quick but didn’t want to be hustled too hard! What happened to the headliner on the Brit Pop Jag? It looks like it’s been to a very bad custom shop!

@@PNoblesGarage that’s me! I’m not finding the Austin Powers paint job too ‘groovy baby’ either. Keep it ‘standard’ as James May would say. There’s not so much of a dropping headliner issue generally in the UK we don’t have enough hot weather to melt the adhesive 😂

Has any company ford have acquired been improved, jaguar, Aston Martin, Kwik fit, Volvo, Mazda etc etc, probably not

The very imaginative, optimistic horsepower ratings of Jaguars has always been amusing. The Union Jack XJ6 on a dyno would be lucky to show 180hp. My dad's XKR cabrio claims 390hp yet can barely get out its own way. My 2001 Viggen with 235+ actual hp leaves it in the dust.

@@gulfstream7235 I'm not saying I'd personally have that but I think it looks cool (like the Minis with the Union Jack or St George on the roof) My ultimate is a black XJ (X350) but with the 5 litre supercharged lump upfront (obviously with the suspension sorted, 6 pot alloy calipers upfront, 4 pots rear, bigger disks all round, well judged exhaust etc. My dream 'G' ride (G as in Gangster) They have great presence with a nice dollop of menace standard, so with a decent step up in power it'd be sweet!

No, you're right. that headliner has been pinned rather than fixed. Slight PITA to get out. Best to remove a seat and remove through the rear door w/ trim out. Some say the windshield has to come out but it can be done through the door.

what kinds of issues are you talking about on the later cars? other than the preventative timing chain tensioner jobs and PR valves on the transmissions

I can tell you bluntly that without Ford's acquisition Jaguar would have gone down the pan big time. Quality was never measured in any sort of methodical quantitative way. When Ford arrived that changed big time, with internal quality measures, warranty measured quality and customer based feedback the best known being the JD Power ratings in the USA. Jaguar XJ40 was at position > 100 in the JD power ratings and came out way below the Ford Granada of the day on the internal quality ratings within Ford. The warranty costs were going out the roof and it was only the £/$ of the day exchange rate that was keeping it afloat. By the time of X300 Jaguar was climbing the JD power ratings but the XJ40 had set up Jag as a poor quality producer, a reputation that is so hard to lose. So even though Jag attained the no 2 spot in JD Power surveys of the mid to late 1990s, behind Lexus and way ahead of all its German competition that reputation for poor quality stuck. Amalgamation of LR into Jaguar was a disaster as they never ever went through that horrendous period of driving out all the quality issues and have thus diluted all that good work. JLRs reputation suffers because. In the days of Bill Hayden and Jim Padilla Quality was first second and third priority. I believe its slipped ever since. Many/most of the old guard at Jaguar hated Bill Hayden because he took Jaguar by the scruff of the nek and gave it a good shaking and made it face the truth about itself and he did it because he loved the brand, hated the then leadership, which he got shot of.. The people working at Jaguar mostly loved him..

The 1993 XJ40 was a great car And the rectangular headlights were for the higher trim, the lower still had Round but I would take the rectangle. The XJ40 was a complete remake and a last hoorah and turned out fantastic

I drive an 08 XJ LWB x358 model which is the last of the round headlights before they did the mondeo looking one & I love it- yes it has a few a few electrical gremlins but it’s nothing that can’t be resolved & being the v6 diesel it has bundles of torque and returns 45mpg on a run!

Just my personal opinion and rightly opinions do vary but to me the X350s are the cremé de la cremé, I have an 03 XJ8 4.2 I'm absolutely in love with it(sorry her) in 3 years she has been totally reliable and has only cost me annual servicing and that's not megga expensive, it is just beautiful to drive and has rekindled my long lost liking for "Sunday drives" it is just such a lovely place to be, I do silly things like go the long way round to the shops etc😆 (you should always give them a good warm up!) I'm totally besotted a wonderful beast indeed 💖

Well, thats topical after I commented about my XJ`s on the Bentley video! I`ve owned SIII`s, XJ40`s (pre & post Ford), X300`s & X308`s, & as I said on the other vid, they`ve all been very well behaved mechanically, including the X308`s, despite the reputation they`ve got. The X308 is a much better package that its predecessors, the handling & feel in particular is noticeably better than the previous models, including the X300, the ride is as good as the previous ones too, on 16" rims at least, the low profiles on the 18" models does result in a much harsher ride. That ones doing well at that mileage, although I could hear some suspension knocks, so not necessarily the best example to chuck around the twistys! The highest mileage X308 I`ve had was around 190,000 miles about 10 years ago (got it as a spares car, very cheap), mechanically it was still spot on, but it had been used, abused & neglected & was quite battered bodily.

Fantastic shape possibly the best profile of any large saloon car. Minor quibble for me just not wide enough at just 5 ft 10 or 70'' wide. They only look wide due to being so low slung

Never mind the exterior paint job, I'm looking at the head lining thats obviously falling down and needs replacing. Its looking alike a studded bed quilt. It isn't that expensive to buy a new headlining kit. £300 will se one delivered and ts an easy fit with help from a friend.

I like the paintjob, but this car needs a new headliner... ;-)

The front end looked so similar to some Rovers of the same era !

Own an 04 X-Type since new. Only 86k on her. Been a good car and no real issue. Fuel pump r/r and the rear main is now starting to weep a little, not fixing that, but that’s it. Not worth selling as no value. So driving her until she dies.😎

The X300 was essentially a re skinned XJ40, the late XJ40's from '92 to '94 were superbly built thanks to Ford.

Had an 89 3.6 manual for 6 years (late 92 - early 99) the a 94 plate Daimler from April 99 - 2016. Loved both. Neither was in anyway unreliable, and very simple to service yourself.

I have a middle-child 1991 Sovereign XJ40. Not as bad as the early ones, but not as good as the later XJ40s. Still, I love it!

They all fall down and someone pinned it rather than pulling the backer board and re-lining it. Maintenance issue on all cars that age... just a pita b/c it's best to pull a seat & pull it out through the rear door.

I owned a SIII XJ6 '86 model for 8 years, it was only 4 years old on acquisition, and it was totally reliable over several thousand miles. A wonderful car and I have yet to experience a better overall riding car for the money. The XK engine was long stroke so did not rev that high, but the 4.2 litres wafted you anywhere effortlessly. The car featured in the video is in my opinion the last decent looking XJ, true to Jaguar tradition. Such a pity Jag don't have stylists with original thinking now, what would William Lyons bring to the drawing board now to woo the car buying public?

You only have to look at his historical work to see Lyons wouldn't have created the XJ40, let alone X300 and so on. He would have moved on to new ideas, not got stuck down as his successors did. Jaguar, under its founder, looked forwards. It's the people who took over who looked back, and it is they who are responsible for the company's woes.

@@ivanfernyhough3851 "last great looking jags are the 350/358 model" Interesting view! While I don't love the Lexus-ish styling Jaguar adopted under Ian Callum, I don't think it is a big problem. I recall the XKR X150 being well-received and obviously the other Jaguars ditched the quad lamps and have adopted similar styling lines as the XKR X150 to the present day. BMW and Mercedes design has obviously changed a lot since the early 2000's too, seemingly with no detriment to sales. I'm not sure the XJ and S-Type/XF keeping similar styling from the late 90's to the present would necessarily be such a success. Many buyers, inexplicably, dislike wood veneer trim & tan leather, and select alternative, sometimes 'Teutonic', interior options for instance (e.g., carbon fibre-effect trim & black leather 🤨). Alfa Romeo & Maserati seem to have much the same problem of becoming imitation German cars... 'What's the point?'

The best Jaguar uphill to the x300, then downhill since, I helped develop this model at Witley R&D.

I just kept wondering if the headlining was going to fall on your head while you were driving.

The 'headline' annoys me. Ford saved Jaguar (and Aston Martin) while allowing them to work their magic. My XKR is one of the results of this and it is fantastic. I'm so sick and tired of ignorant people dismissing Jags of that era saying, "oh, they're really only Fords". No they aren't

Yep. British Leyland somehow get a pass & people target the ford era.i remember the comments I got when I had my X type a few years ago 😂

Don't just leave the gearbox in D, use the gears to keep the engine on chat and you'll discover a different beast. It's actually nice to hear you not being Italian on a video. Good job.

You need to use the "manual" change on the left if you want to play in the bends, much more responsive. That's why it's a u gate, right hand side for grandad's, left hand side for boy racers.

The AJ16 is the best straight 6 engine that Jaguar ever built. These cars are very underrated and a lot better than the later V8s which had many engine issues.

I sold my 1989 XJ40 3.6 with nearly 380k on the clock, was still smooth and punchy, bombproof engines then the later AJ16.

The AJV8 had 2 primary issues, one of which wasn't the cars fault at all (& affected many manufacturers, including BMW & Porsche).

Jack, what do you think of the last run out 2007 ish XJR cars? You mention reliability of later cars. I’ve always liked the XJR from late 90s to 2008 I think ? Cheers

Hey, I’m not an expert on this so can’t advise. I have driven that era XJR and remember it being very soft.. in terms of handling.

Had a mate here in Western Australia who was years ahead of Ford by shoehorning a Ford 302ci Cleveland v8s into a MK2 jaguar ...the extractors were a true work of art but he got it in there and it was certainly the best Mk2 in Perth when done. He ended doing a few until word spread and then he had hisvhands full doing the same to XJs which had slightly more room to accommodate the V8..

@@byteme9718 Nah, he, myself, and all his paying customers knew a lemon once they had to start paying it's pension, and 'very' wisely opted to spend that money on a well designed power plant that could easily handle the heat of a west Aussie summer, rather than wasting it trying to revive a boat mooring the original donk would become.

That headliner reminded me of the 1984 XJ-S I had, a beautiful car but the headliner was falling down in the same way, I pinned it up, like has been done with this car. It was a lovely car to drive though, smooth as silk.

I laughed out loud as soon as I saw that! The "biscuit" headliners from the Series 3 onwards ALL do that eventually. My '03 X350 joined the club last year. Jaguar won't solve it because it's now a tradition🙂

@@peterrenn6341 The supplier of the headlining fabric flame bonded the foam to the back of the fabric. It was the disintegration of the foam over the years that caused the problem.

I think it may be a straight six? There is a lovely guy in Ramsgate his company is Myrtle he can do that head lining. Did my DB9 brilliant.

Jaguar launched the XJ in 1968 I think 🤔
