My Tears Ricochet is actually about her ex record label and how Scott betrayed her and sold her 1st six albums without her consent. That's why she sings You'll hear my stolen lullabies.

cardigan, august and betty are a part of the teenage love triangle, a made up storyline connecting the 3 songs. they explore the love triangle from all 3 people's perspectives at different times in their lives. the 3 people are betty, james and august (aka augustine or 'the other girl' ). james has a summer fling with augustine over the summer while he's still dating his girlfriend and their classmate, betty. this summer love is explained in the song august and is from augustine's perspective. betty learns about the fling from another girl inez, after which james decides to apologize to her. the apology is explained in the song betty and is from james' perspective. after many years, betty looks back on her relationship with james and how special, but painful it was. this is explained in the song cardigan. and that's the teenage love triangle!

“Every song on this album is my favorite” So relatable and exactly why people love it so much. Also, in Betty, I feel that anxiety as he approaches the door every time.

the last great american dynasty is about rebekah harkness, a wealthy socialite that bought a beach side house on rhode island (often reffered to as the holiday house). at the time she was prolific for throwing parties and inviting many celebrities, but she also used to get a lot of criticism from the tabloids and other island residents (this is where you could draw a similarity to taylor). in 2013 taylor bought that house, hence her comparing herself to rebekah! she said she's wanted to write a song about rebekah since learning about the history of the house. if you want to to learn more about the songs, you should check out folklore: the long pond studio sessions, basically a live version of the album in which she explains the creation of every song!! (if you can't tell, this song is my favorite from the album lol)

Fun Fact: the song Seven appears in a scene from the Netflix series Heartstopper, after a member of a sapphic couple reveals to her partner that she lives in an abusive home and that she is not out to her mother. The producers of the series hinted that Taylor Swift gave the use of the song to the series for free, or at least for a super low fee, after Taylor saw the images of the scene she agreed that the song Seven should be there and gave them permission to use it. Also, loved your reaction to the album, it's by far my fav from her career :)

This album is mostly fictional, and folklore has a sister album called evermore. There are 3 fictional characters taylor created, Betty, James and Augustine. And we call them the teenage love triangle. Betty is from James' perspective, he is apologizing to betty for cheating with Augustine. August is from Augustine's perspective and her saying she was like a 3rd wheel. Cardigan is from Betty's perspective after she grew up,she's looking back at the situation.

this is me trying is also about struggles with mental health! in the long pond studio sessions she goes over the meaning and how she wrote all the songs from folklore, and i highly reccomend you watch it! she says in that song she was thinking about people who get up every day and struggle. Who are dealing with depression, disabilities, addiction etc. She said that no one tells them good job, or pats them on the back. I relate to that song heavily, as i have Multiple Sclerosis, and some days its difficult for me to even walk to the bathroom. How she understands that struggle and explains it so well in that song makes me and many others feel so incredibly seen, as those in our lives often struggle to understand what we deal with. Great video by the way! And its is ok to have 30,000 favorites!!! This is my #1 song, but i have a hard time naming a top 5 because she just has so many great songs!

you were right about this is me trying. i would like to add that the song is also about addiction and mental illness. this was more highlighted in the second verse. she explained on the pond studio that those people face everyday struggles and don't always get a pat on the back. she considered how often someone enduring such hardships might want to tell everyone around them, "you have no idea how close I am to going back to a dark place."

Well, of course I love them all lol especially the love triangle with cardigan August and Betty, and Epiphany is one of my favorite songs. so it’s a two-part song, but the overall message is witnessing and experiencing things that you may never be able to speak about. The first part was about her grandfather, who was a medic in the military and saw things that were unspeakable, the second part of the song (about someone’s mother and daughter)and holding hands through plastic, had to do with doctors and nurses during the pandemic. And them also having to see things they may never be able to speak about and only 20 minutes to sleep because they have to get back to saving lives. I like it because I had to work in the medical field during the pandemic and I could totally relate and it helps me process. Thank you for sharing your reaction to folklore.

my tears ricochet gives me the calmed rage catharsis! You'll relate to it, just change to "you" subject to one of your loved ones that betrayed you, and ugh, top 2 for me, My top 1 is illicit affairs, but that's besides the point hoax is that one song that gives you just a depression feeling after hearing it. No anger, no happiness, or any other feelings, just depression. loml is close too, but the ending of it has an angry vibe, that "our field of dreams engulfed in fire" has some spice (at least for me) Other songs like this you haven't heard from her, Last Kiss is also a super depressing song, but it has some hopeful feelings at the end, so very far from hoax Sad Beautiful Tragic, is also one of these depressing songs, but it has some angry emotions at the bridge too, All that to say, hoax is the song from her that I have no other feelings than depression, it's one of a kind, and that's why I love it

The music video to cardigan is a freaking masterpiece 😢 You might also enjoy the Long Pond Studio Sessions- they are live recorded versions of these songs and she has interviews for almost all of the songs explaining some of her thought processes behind them. Hearing how her brain works is sooo interesting to me. The long pond studio sessions are what hooked and converted me 😂

The Last Great American Dynasty is about Rebekah Harkness, a socialite, philanthropist, dance patron, and one of the richest women during the 1940s. Rebekah and Bill owned Holiday House in Rhode Island back in the day but it has since been abandoned for 50 years after Bill died and Rebekah left and never returned. In 2012, Taylor Swift bought Holiday House. She said she always wanted to write a song about Rebekah, the former owner of her house, because it also becomes a reflection of how she has taken those lessons, lived in that house, and had her own misdeeds in that space like its prior owners.
