"Seven" was a beautiful song, but the lyrics are haunting. It's about a childhood friend from an abusive household, but young Taylor is too innocent to realize what is happening at her friend's house, only that her friend is always sad and scared. She just wants to make her friend happy and thinks that if they run away, all their problems can be solved. She's looking back on the situation now, she "can't remember her friend's face" but hopes that wherever this friend is, they found the safety and happiness that was absent from their childhood.

@@avvil9683 @cheyenne moseley I don't know to be honest. This is not a story that she has spoken of before. Also, the album being titled "folklore" implies that a lot of these songs are based on stories that others have passed on to her. Perhaps she really did have a friend from an abusive home... or perhaps someone else told her this story. Either way, I think it's a great song and touches on a subject that we don't often hear about in music.

yeah! in Betty James says "i'm young, i know nothing" but Betty says in Cardigan "when you are young they assume you know nothing" but it isn't true for Betty because she knew ever since she was young "cause i knew everything when i was young" because of her father "leaving like a father" (implied her father left just like james probably cheated just like james and james will come back just like her father did). listen to Taylor's old song Mine has the lyrics "careless man's careful daughter" it has the same effect as this. just a short phrase but it says so much more. Taylor is a genius.

Sher The Truth Of course ❤️ if you look at the lyrics, you see how several songs are linked in terms of storyline. For example, Cardigan (from Betty’s perspective about how James cheated on her - “chase 2 girls, lose the 1” / “Peter losing Wendy”, but later, he returns to her “porch step” at her party - “I knew you’d come back to me”), August (from Inez’s POV, the girl who James cheated on Betty with - “you were never mine to lose” / secrecy - “meet me behind the mall”), and Betty (from Jame’s POV, about how when he was with Inez, he was “thinking” of Betty all summer long, how he cheated that summer, and how that’s the “worst thing” he’s done to Betty, how Betty “heard the rumors from Inez”, and how he finally showed up at her “porchstep at her party”. And ESPECIALLY when James says “I’m only 17, I don’t know anything” which is ironic cuz in Cardigan, Betty says, “when you are young, they assume you know nothing / i knew everything when I was young”). I swear it’ll make sense if you listen to these 3 in a row LOL.

Like Mirrorball for example, I think its 100% about being a performer/people pleaser type of personality, trying to fit in and remain in the eyes of her audience or even media ("I know they say the end os near.. but Im still on my highest tip toes, spinning in my highest heels love, shining Just for you")

"The Last Great American Dynasty" is the true story about the house she bought in Rhode Island. "Epiphany"= her grandfather's war stories/covid med staff. "My Tears Ricochet" on the face is about suicide. Then there's the 3 songs all from a different perspective of the love triangle. Which three, is still under debate. My guess is Illicit Affairs (Betty's perspective), Betty (James' perspective), & August (Inez' perspective).

"They called off the circus, burned the disco down" calls out her Red and 1989 eras. Refers to how the fanfare of her previous eras have been snuffed out by time and the acclaim she always has to submit to. Mirrorball is a song about how she is always so willing to bend and refract light into the way we wish her to be seen. To be in the public eye means to submit to the demands of the audience that watches and listens to your material, and this song attests to how well she has kept true to herself while making her content as palpably relatable to everyone who chooses to listen. She's a mirrorball. Her critics are the regulars; the masquerade revellers, drunk as they watch her shattered edges glisten.

I was thinking the same thing! I’m a COVID nurse and listened to the album when it first came out while driving home from a really difficult shift. Those lyrics had me crying so hard, I had to pull over. It speaks volumes of what it’s like to work in healthcare right now. People are dying alone in hospital beds because we can’t have visitors. Healthcare workers are struggling to provide a fraction of peace for these people during their final moments. Between that imagery and the reference to the trauma of war, I think Epiphany is the most profound song Taylor has ever written.

Omg I really spent 1h here with you enjoying poetry and good music. And I loved it. Some fans have interpreted the heartbreak in this album as the heartbreak Taylor felt when her mentor and manager Scott Borchetta betrayed her and sold her entire discography to Scooter Braun. So there a many themes combined: 1) the whole folklore and fictional stories (about Betty and James), which one would say is the most superficial reading. They are to be taken at face value. So there are song in many POV of that love triangle. 2) Her love for joe and for music, who are the 2 things that saved her: cardigan, peace, invisible string 3) The loss of her "stolen lullabies" through the hands of someone she deeply trusted : My tears ricochet, Mad woman and Hoax are about. She is still deeply hurt about that, it froze her ground loosing her masters and changing record label. So she wasn't betrayed or cheated on by Joe, but by her manager. 4) Also I feel like every song has a different underlying "mental illness" theme: mirrorball (needing others approval), seven (home abuse), epiphany (ptsd from war or covid), this is me trying (depression and substance abuse).... and many more. It's so complex that it's creazy. Anyway, I really enjoyed your wit and passion for melodies and alliterations haha

She is an incredibly genius songwriter. My tears ricochet is actually about her old record label selling her masters and leaving the label and how betrayed she felt after being there 15 years and Scott Borchetta being like a second father to her. “Stolen lullabies” “crossing out the good years” “cursin my name, wishing I stayed.” I think a lot of songs on this album are about that pain. I believe the 1 and hoax are also about Scott and I think mad woman is partially scooter Braun but also obviously Kim and Kanye from “women like hunting witches too, doing your dirtiest work for you/it’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together” also betty, cardigan, and august are a love triangle from each person’s perspective with cardigan being betty’s perspective years later, reflecting on young love and how that person stays frozen in your mind at the age you met them, betty is James’s point of view coming back saying “would you believe me if I told you it was just a summer thing?” And august is the other girls point of view BUT it’s also theorized to be a love triangle between her, the fans, and Scott Borchetta with cardigan being a love letter to the fans “when I felt like an old cardigan under someone’s bed, YOU (the fans) put me on and Said I was your favorite (musician), august being about her music (you were never mine to lose) and Betty being what she wishes Scott would say to her to make it better. She is INCREDIBLE. The deep cuts are always hidden in the albums. Most singles do not accurately represent the genius that is hidden in a TS album. If you like the slower, sad, vulnerable type of lyrics, you should def check out Red

Tara Bartley this is a little bit of a stretch. The album has a lot of references to the pain caused by the riff between her and Scott Brochetta, and loosing her masters. tears ricochet is def about that and mad women too, as well as for anyone that portrays her as crazy for fighting for the things she believes in and telling her she should let go but she keeps fighting. The trilogy is just pure story telling and probably reminiscing about her own experiences with young love. this is me trying is clearly about her fame/career as is mirrorball about wanting to be loved.

@@tarabartley9279 almost every son references old lyrics. She loves to do that for fans and mentioned that these songs can be tied to other songs she has previously released. She also told fans that the songs are about a love triangle. Listen to Betty and then Cardigan immediately after. "You put me on and said I was your favorite" meaning he 'put her on', lied to her.. if you google what it means to put someone on it will say it means to lie to them or a HOAX. in Betty, James says "Im only 17 I don't know anything" in Cartigan Betty says "When you are young they assume you know nothing". The more you listen to the album you realize how layered the songs are. They are connected to tell a story but on top of that each individual song is telling a story that pertains to her own life and pulls lyrics from old songs. It is an absolute masterpiece if you ask me.

Tara Bartley, I agree with you about Hoax. I think she is saying that what she perceived as Scott’s love for her as a person when she was part of his label was just a hoax in that he never loved her he just wanted something from her. I think the line “You knew it still hurts underneath my scar From when they pulled me apart” references the Taylor swift is cancelled/reputation era and Finishing the line with “But what you did was just as dark” references Scott knowingly selling her album to one of those people and the her biggest bullies.

Mirrorball is about being a woman in the spotlight and having to constantly reinvent yourself every couple of years like she has since she entered the industry as a teenager. She’s talked about it in Miss Americana & how negatively fame and media has impacted her self worth and self image. It can also be interpreted as Taylor’s message for her fans and how she understands that we put ourselves into her songs. She knows that her music is relatable to us and helps a lot of us process things that we go through in our own lives, so she’s saying she won’t stop exploring songwriting from different perspectives so that there can be a song for everyone in her discography 🥺

The one other song of hers I can think of that does that (which is a very poetic thing to do, you don't really do it in day-to-day language) is Dear John. Only one line is like that, but it's the first line of the song so it's still very memorable. The rest of the song is still quite poetic I think, just in different ways, I think Dear John is the most poetic song from her first three albums. Aside from that it doesn't have much in common with Invisible String though, because Dear John is a scorcher of a breakup song.

What I’ve gathered from all the fan theories/reactions going around: the 1 is Taylor daydreaming about the what-ifs of a failed relationship. _____ cardigan, betty and august are 3 parts of a teenage love triangle: cardigan is told from the perspective of Betty after finding out she was cheated on and knowing this person would eventually want her back (I knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired/ And you’d be standin’ in my front porch light) betty is told from the perspective of James (either a boy or a girl) swearing the affair was only a summer fling (Slept next to her, but/ I dreamt of you all summer long) august is told by the other girl who knows that this is wrong (Canceled plans just in case you’d call/ And say, “Meet me behind de mall”) and also knows this is fleeting because James still loves Betty (So much for summer love and saying “us” /‘Cause you weren’t mine to lose) _____ the last great american dynasty is about Rebekah Harkness who was the previous owner of her Rhode Island house. She endured a lot of the same criticism Taylor and many women in the spotlight face in their careers (being too loud, not knowing her place, ruining a good man’s life, being a mad woman, etc.) exile is a duet between two ex-lovers wondering what went wrong (‘Cause you never gave a warning sign /I gave so many signs) my tears ricochet might be about being betrayed by the guy who owned her songs (dude wouldn’t let her buy her own music but sold it to someone she hated) (And when you can’t sleep at night/ You hear my stolen lullabies) mirrorball is about reflecting other people’s personalities/ideas of who you should be but feeling like you can’t be authentic (I’m a mirrorball/ I can change everything about me to fit in) seven is about childhood love that never dies (Cross your heart, won’t tell no other/ And though I can’t recall your face/ I still got love for you) this is me trying is her recognizing that she makes mistakes and is still trying to be better (And maybe I don’t quite know what to say/ But I’m here in your doorway) illicit affairs is about what it’s like to be the mistress in a relationship and how when the thrill fades it becomes quite tragic (What started in beautiful rooms/ Ends in meetings in parking lots) invisible string is about remembering all the little things in her life that lead her to finding Joe like they were destined to meet (And isn’t it just so pretty to think/ All along there was some/ Invisible string/ Tying you to me?) mad woman is about how she is often turned into a villain in her own story and portrayed as this crazy bitch by the media. It’s also about the people who have betrayed and hurt her but act surprised when she refuses to just take it quietly (No one likes a mad woman/ You made her like that) epiphany is both about her grandfathers’ time in the military and doctors and nurses during the pandemic. It talks about struggling in this ‘war’ and only finding peace in your dreams peace is also about her relationship with Joe. It’s about being able to promise him everything except for a peaceful and drama-free life (Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?)

Sice Saturday I've seen so many reaction videos, some better than others. I've seen the reaction of crying teenage fans, rapper singers, even music producers and professional video editors. It's been so interesting to see the perspective from each one and all the points of view! Seeing yours is just what I needed. There are so many things she says that even though sound incredibly beautiful I don't understand, and had it not been because of your description about her theatre references I would have never undertstood "Exile" like I do now. Now that song is my fvorite one of the album because of that! Now it makes sense! Thanks to watching all these videos I understand why Taylor's #5 tracks are the ones people look forward the most every time. I used to write so much when I was young, and something happened when I got married that that facet of myself got "locked away". I am a 34 grown woman, mother of a toddler, busy and trying to start a new business... all that to say that whne I listened to this album that young, dreamer part of me has nudged me and made me think back to all those endless nights of writing poetry, essays, stories. I feel so moved by this album and not because I may have lived through some of these stories, but there's something nostalgic about it that brings me back to my own adolescence: from the music and lyrics to the scenes and font they chose for the lyric videos. I could keep writing about how much I like it without pinpointing exactly what it is. Maybe the part of me that I left behind and my soul is longing for. Anyways, thanks for yor video!

Just a few background pieces that might help understanding the lyrics: The Last Great American Dynasty is about Rebekah Harkness, whose house Taylor bought-her story is really interesting and worth looking up. My Tears Ricochet and Mad Woman seem to be about the betrayal of her old label selling her masters to Scooter Braun without letting her bid for them, and possibly a hint of the situation with Kanye. Epiphany contrasts her grandfather's time in WWII with the work of nurses during COVID (and probably also treating her mother who has cancer).

I love your reaction/review! It's nice to see someone pay attention to even the smallest details of the songs and appreciate the lyrics. It felt like you were genuinely enjoying it and it felt so authentic. This is what a true reaction should be and this definitely deserves more views!

This might be the best reaction video I’ve seen so far. Like it was FUN, it was appreciative, it was raw, and attentive. You need to keep these coming! I’ve seen in the comments that you’ll react to Red next, can’t wait for that. Sending you lots of loovee💕

“The Last Great American Dynasty” is one of the best examples of how good at storytelling Taylor is. The song is about her house on Rhode Island and she’s telling the story of the previous owner! I loveeee the imagery in ghat song.

Subscribed!!!! this reaction video is what I've been waiting since forever, most of reaction channels only focused on the sound but not on it's content. So happy to see this reaction, hope to watch every album of Taylor here since all of her works are so poetic, sending love all the way from Philippines. Keep safe everyone, take care 💕

I've seen that a lot of people have suggested Red as poetic, and I totally agree, but I was thinking that you might also enjoy the low-key ones in 1989 like This Love (my favourite she has ever done, lyrically and vocally), Clean, Wonderland, and some of the non-singles ones in basically her whole discography, that is where the poetry is, I believe.

This is my favorite Taylor reaction yet. I am a Swiftie and have been for a long time- but I’m a longtime fan of Bon Iver and primarily indie music since I was a teenager. This album merged two worlds for me. I am also a writer, so your reaction resonated with me. Thank you for this! Side note: the OC did have a great soundtrack! Death cab, spoon- too many to name.

this video is awesome :) taylor is one of my favorite lyricists so when i watch album reviews, im always disappointed by the lack of interest in the lyrics from people's initial listen. watching you analyze the lyrics specifically along with the melodic patterns and stanzas is so cool for me! thanks for making this!
