“50 years is a long time, Holiday house sat quietly on that beach, free of women with madness, their men and bad habits, And then it was bought by me. Who knows if I never showed up what could have been?” This song is about the previous owners of her mansion in rhode island. She starts talking in first person at the end of the song because it’s after she purchased the house. This is one of my favorite songs on Folklore, the storytelling is incredible. Since you aren't familiar with her, it would be good to read the prologue of each album to get an idea of the theme before you listen. It'll give you an idea on what frame of mind to be in and how it all ties together. She also left secret messages for each song for her first 5 albums. The lyric booklets have letters capitalized that spell it out. I imagine that if you ask, a Swiftie has that info on hand or you can find it easily online

First, I just wanted to say that I LOVED this reaction. You appreciated her songwriting, and that's all I ask for as a Swiftie. Also, be warned, this is going to be a very long comment: First, the connections between "betty" and "cardigan". - "cardigan", which is thought to take place years after the affair took place, heavily features the line "When you are young they assume you know nothing". This directly parallels "betty", which features the line "I'm only 17, I don't know anything". Also relating to this are the lines in "cardigan" which go "But I knew everything when I was young" and "Peter losing Wendy". In the J.M. Barrie novel Peter Pan, Wendy Darling leaves Neverland (and Peter) because she was mature and decided to grow up. Peter was left behind to stay a child forever. Betty is saying that she was wise when she was young, and that she has matured and grown. James has stayed young and foolish, like Peter. - In "cardigan", the lyrics say "I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired/And you'd be standing in my front porch light". In "betty", lines can be found that say "But I know I miss you" and "Betty, I'm here on your doorstep". - There are also the lines "To kiss in cars" from "cardigan" and "Kissing in my car again" in "betty" that form clear parallels. - A possible connection is the line "Drunk under a streetlight" from "cardigan" paired with "Stopped at a streetlight" from "betty". - In "cardigan" a line goes "High heels on cobblestones". In "betty", it says "I was walking home on broken cobblestones". - The clearest connection of all, though, is the line in "betty" that says "Standing in your cardigan". I don't think I need to explain this one. Next are the parallels between "betty" and "august". - In "august", there are lyrics that read "So much for summer love and saying 'us'", as well as "Will you call when you're back at school?", and frequent mentions of the month of August, which parallels directly to lines in "betty" that say "In the garden would you trust me/If I told you it was just a summer thing" and "Slept next to her/But I dreamt of you all summer long". - In "august", a line goes "Remember when I pulled up/And said 'Get in the car'". In "betty", a line goes "Just thinking of you when she pulled up/Like a figment of my worst intentions/She said 'James, get in, let's drive'". Vintage tee: Taylor Swift (self-titled album) Brand new phone: Fearless High heels on: Speak Now Cobblestones: RED Sequin smile: 1989 Black lipstick: reputation Sensual politics: Lover In "invisible string", she says "Bad was the blood of the song in the cab on your first trip to LA". Her song "Bad Blood" was a hit single off of 1989. The best metaphor I've ever heard about this album was when someone said (about exile), that his voice is black coffee and hers is sugar. "seven" depicts a child whose friend is in an abusive household, but the child doesn't know it: "And I've been meaning to tell you/I think your house is haunted/Your dad is always mad/And that must be why/I think you should come live with me/And we can be pirates/Then you won't have to cry". Taylor was born in Pennsylvania, and lived there until she was 14, when her family moved the Nashville, Tennessee, so that she could pursue a music career. Guess that one paid off lol As others have pointed out, Taylor's track 5 is always the most emotional, vulnerable song on the album. She has 8: (Taylor Swift) Cold As You (Fearless) White Horse (Speak Now) Dear John (RED) All Too Well (most consider this to be her best song ever written) (1989) All You Had to Do Was Stay (reputation) Delicate (Lover) The Archer (folklore) my tears ricochet I don't know if you were watching the lyric videos, but in the video for "peace", the line "robbers to the east, clowns to the West" had the "w" in "West" capitalized. Besides the fact that Scooter and Scott, who robbed her of her music, live in the east, Taylor and Kanye *West* have been rivals since 2009. I'll leave it at that. On her album "Speak Now", there is a song called "Better Than Revenge", which depicts a vengeful attitude towards a girl that "stole" Taylor's boyfriend. She was only 18 when she wrote the song, and she has said that she deeply regrets writing it. She never performs it, because, as she says, no one can take your significant other if they don't choose to leave. Even though I don't think "this is my trying" was about her, because most of this album isn't, that's what I think of when I hear the line "And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad/I have a lot of regrets about that". In "invisible string", she says "The string that pulled you out of all those wrong arms right into that dive bar". In her song "Delicate", on reputation, there is a line that goes "Dive bar on the East Side, where you at?" Also in "invisible string", she says "Cold was the steel of my ax to grind for the boys that broke my heart/Now I send their babies presents". This is likely a reference to Joe Jonas, one of her exes, whose wife, Sophie Turner, gave birth to their daughter Willa very shortly after the album released. In "mad woman", she says "And women like hunting witches too/Doing your dirtiest work for you". In "I Did Something Bad" on reputation, she says "They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one". This is also likely referencing Scooter Braun's wife, who bashed Taylor on social media, as well as Kim Kardashian West, who did the same on Kanye's behalf. In "epiphany", she transitions from the tale of a WW2 soldier on the battlefield (inspired by her grandfather), to a COVID-19 patient in a hospital room.

That's the era where she broke through, worldwide super famous. And then she moved to newyork where you can see her in high hills on the newyork streets. Rep is black lipstick era plus in 2016 met Gala she wore black lipstick. And lover era is the first time she spoke about her political views and wrote songs like "Miss Americana and the heartbreak prince", "YNTCD" , "THE MAN" & "ONLY THE YOUNG". So it's like... Hahahha you were on point! This album is not about her. There is some self-reflection here and there, but its mostly fictional stories she made up, like a teenage love triangle from 3 different perspectives on "cardigan", "august" and "betty" respectively. and events she was inspired by, like her grandfather being a soldier in war on 'epiphany' , her childhood friend who had an abusive family on 'seven', and the story of the previous owners of the holiday house which she owns now on 'the last great american dynasty'. Hence the name "folklore".

Once u know this information, if u re-listen to the album and pay attention to these storylines, you will easily connect the dots !! The hints are subtle, yet very clear! "Cardigan" is from betty's perspective , "august" is from the mistress's perspective and "betty" is from jame's perspective. U can analyze these characters and know so much about them from the lyrics alone. An example of a connection is: Cardigan at 3:13 “and you’d be standing in my front porch light” Betty at 3:13 “Betty, I’m here on your doorstep”

Invisible String is my favorite song on the album - it's so autobiographical and specific to her life but at the same time the way she constructs the story is so relatable and it feels like she's narrating analogues to my life at the same time. I think that's the most special thing about Taylor's music - she's not shy about how personal and specific her music gets, but it's precisely that level of detail that gives her work the authenticity that makes it relatable. When you're in love, when you're just living your daily life, you notice these little things about the people and the town and all the little things that happen. She doesn't make her statement by telling you how it feels, she SHOWS it to you and you're right there with her through all her memories and her pain and her happiness every step of the way.

The Last Great American Dynasty is one of my favorite songs. The thing about this song is that it's based and inspired by real events. Rebekah is actually a real person. The first person that was being shown in the first part was Rebekah Harkness. She married Bill a rich powerful man/heir of an oil company. They bought a house at the end of the Rhode Island and named it Holiday House. Eventually her husband died and people still managed to put it on her. "It must've been her fault his heart gave out." After that tragic event she moved to a big city to start anew, she open a ballerina house and had grand parties with her friends. She was known for her luxury and such. She had feud with her neighbor as heard from lyrics And then "50 years is a long time holiday house sat quietly on that beach, free of women with madness and their men and bad habits, and then it was bought by me." Does it sound so familiar now? Somehow in this unbelievable happenstance, the same woman that walked the floors of that house 50 years ago, parallels the life of another woman now walking in the same floors as she did. And only this house will ever witness the beauty of that. Though not in everything, in a way, Taylor relates to Rebekah. Being portrayed differently after going through the worst of their tragic love stories, fleeting to find connection and friendships in a big city (Taylor Swift: New York), feud with neighbors, and just ruining everything as they say. But regardless of that, they had a marvelous time, not caring anymore about what other people would say. They are still different people but standing on the same floors - figuratively and literally, with a woman from 50 years ago, just gives you the chills.

Her 3rd album Speak Now is completely self written and was my favorite until this album. This is easily, indisputably her best work. There’s so many nuances she slips in like I’m cardigan she goes through her old eras Vintage tee, brand new phone 1989 and debut referenced High heels on cobblestone - red Sequin smile black lipstick, reputation Sensual politics - lover She does it again in hoax going through all of the albums she doesn’t own because she wasn’t allowed to purchase her masters to her work and they were sold to scooter Braun who consistently bullied her and it was heartbreaking that Scott Borchetta who was like her dad after growing up with him and his label would sell her work, songs she wrote about her life and things that happened to her, essentially to her worst enemy. That’s what most of this album is about is the absolute heartbreak of having to leave her label and not owning her work. In hoax she says My only one - debut My smoking gun - fearless My eclipsed sun - speak now My twisted knife - red (the deep cuts) My sleepless night - 1989 My winless fight - reputation (wasn’t nominated for any awards) And she also does it in the bridge of mirrorball. So much about her life is hidden into the layers of other stories on this album and I don’t understand the way her brain works even timing down to the second in certain songs to be singing the same words at the same times in the stories in different songs. She’s truly a genius

I'd highly suggest watching the Long Pond sessions - she talks about what the songs mean to her, and then she, Jack, and Aaron perform each song. You'll fall in love with this album even more. @@MichaelBeveraggi yes she will be re-recording her first 5 albums soon. Unfortunately the label she was signed with since she started her career did her dirty and sold her masters without giving her a chance to purchase herself. It’s a whole mess and as people have been breaking down folklore it seems like part of this album intertwines the pain/heartbreak of having such an important person in her career turn on her. So you were right she intertwined a few songs that go together like “my tears ricochet”, “mad woman”, “hoax” and maybe “exile” but she brilliantly wrote songs that can be also be interpreted in the context of a romantic relationship/toxic relationship. In order to take control of her music she is legally able to re-record albums 1-5 starting this month.
