Honestly while I can’t speak on it crossing the line, I just don’t think the commentary was good in the first place. These people almost never actually focused on commentating the game and instead goofing off with chat, and when I’m watching a major I want good game commentary. On top of this they’d ban anyone who hated on the commentary, an extremely unprofessional act. I don’t like some of what they said but it’s the least of my issues

I’d understand if you were doing this kinda commentary in pools or smth but not when you’ve got two top players in top 16. Thank god for watch parties or I would’ve just skipped this event. Although I do think everyone is blowing it out of proportion with them crossing the line talking about a minors genitalia (they were talking about Dadic, still weird tho) and the gay jokes (it was principal Mike confessing his love for Kiki or smth like that)

Really respect you putting the follow up/apology about the commentary tweet at the beginning and just owning it. On one hand, its kinda sad that this sort of thing deserves acknowledgement at all. But still, appreciate you modeling mature behavior within the community TK.

All CFL tournaments this past weekend (qualifier, Lit, and Cirque) had painfully unfunny/unprofessional/uninformative commentary

the esam bit was a high point that at any other tourney would make me a fan of the comms for life. unfortunately

This goes for all your videos that I’ve seen, but I really appreciate how you don’t always jump to conclusions and give REAL input on issues/topics rather than raging or doing no research like a lot of others tend to do.

For me the problem with these 2 events comms was that it was extremely childish and stupid af, you can say mean words, you can yell and tell people to stfu, whatever... But their commentary was disrespectful to the players, sometimes racist, sexist and just childish af Neither the audience and the players deserve that kind of treatment under the banner of "idgaf is my tourney"

Glad to hear you and Chef worked stuff out. Evan was such a staple to the NRS community, especially during that time when the game actually had real esports money coming in from ESL. Love both of your guys' work and commentary.

the kola thing wasnt a part of the commentary, that was a great moment. Im surprised you didnt have any litvitational clips. The main problem was just that there was great smash happening and they werent even talking about it, talking about pre top 8. Top 8 they got hungrybox and riot actually started to do a good job, i thought they did great. But pre top 8.. idk man. It was funny for awhile but then it was just kinda annoying and disrespectful. They were saying stuff like “aww bro, did you just fart!”, they brought a few of their friends to chill with that didnt know smash, they were just joking around with eachother instead of talking about the game. Its not a big deal, but many people just went to sidestreams bc there were amazing sets happening and we wanted someone to actually recognize it. i think cirque wasnt that bad bc they probably realized they should step it up a little.

I strongly dislike the commentary but it's facts that we should know what we signed up for when we tune into a Kiki event. But if you're gonna be wild on comms, the least you can do is cut off Twitch chat and not argue with people there instead of what's on screen. That's really the big gripe here

Nintendo already has a bad relationship with its player base. The commentary is just another reason to lock out its support. Was funny to me but dumb overall

I respect the opinion, TK, and I appreciate your insight and maturity. I just see things through a different perspective (as a casual viewer/low level competitor). I think a commentator is meant to be listened to. Not everyone likes commentary, but your job is to get people to listen to your analysis, humor, hyping of players, etc. If people mute because they don’t like commentary, that’s one thing. If they’re muting because the commentary makes them uncomfortable, is distracting, or just doesn’t commentate in any meaningful way, then the role of a pro commentator is compromised. “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it” only bears so much weight before the dissenting opinion becomes equal to or greater than the supporting one. It’s also kinda just a ham fisted way to shut down any legitimate criticisms and deflect any wrongdoings imo. I mean, you’re right. It’s one event and probably won’t have much of an impact beyond a big win for Shadic and cool storylines for Mute, Dabuz, and Peab. I don’t think it’s a call to arms about seeking only professional comms. But I think it is a friendly reminder to ask yourself as a comm, “who is my audience and what is my purpose for commentating?” Given how some comms were loud, raunchy, and distracting from the game and others were somewhat professional, it made for kind of an unclear tone for the event. Hoping I could offer a new point of view (:

I have a similar opinion, though I definitely hated the commentary. There's a difference in hyping up a match in a relevant way that is still entertaining(TK, EE, Coney etc are the best at this) and just being a loud asshole. What they did or didn't say doesn't really bother me, but the event felt like it was ran by teenagers who just realized it's not illegal to say curse words. Also don't particularly give a shit who's event it is or who the event "belongs" to - you want viewers? Make the viewing tolerable. Sitting through nails on a chalkboard with this one.
