Actually, his form does give him a harder time compared to those with a more automatic form. His form is awkward, but yea it's not like he can't make one or two per game, especially when he is wide open. Take Giannis for example, his form is also on the awkward side but when he does get open, he won't waste the chance. All I need to see from Simmons is to take those wide open jumper unhesitantly

His release is extremely slow, and it's clear he's pushing the ball, not letting it flow naturally through his hands into the shot. He still keeps an attacking angle in his spine all the way through the pull-up, which forces him to lean his entire upper body back as he collects his shot and makes his release take 3-5 times longer than it should. He's probably always been able to hit practice jumpers, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotten stuffed so many times with that release that he has zero confidence in game.

It’s really not that “hard” to fix it’s just time consuming. In my opinion it’s the feet because when you grow up you’re always around right handers it so you naturally mimic their foot placement on shots. His dad or coach shoulda made him start with his right hand. There’s hope though.

Nice vid coach. I agree, it looks a little better but it's certainly not a picturesque jump shot. I will say I saw him warm up before a game working on the three in person once, and this looks significantly better than that. At that time his shot looked a lot like a set shot and the rhythm was way worse, not to mention the ball spun sideways. With this shot I can at least entertain the thought of him getting it off and occasionally hitting it against NBA defense.

Point the toes on an aggressive 45-degree angle to bring the left elbow in as much as possible. Works mostly for me as a left-handed shooter who is right-side dominant in everything else (kicking, writing, throwing etc). Think of Kevin Durant's feet positioning when shooting and also during a free throw. Maybe it could help? Potentially not a whole lot you could do at the age of 23 though.

Ben Simmions looks great this summer and I'm not like other people that say he was playing against fringe NBA players and he needs to do it in real game's first. I don't care who he was playing against he looks great he dominanted them and he was hitting 3's with no problem at all and turn around jumpers also. I know he can do it in game's he's just gotta go out there and do it.

Coach, did you notice the akward placement of the left hand only partly behind and under the ball when releasing? It looks like the shot is supported by the 4 fingers and the thumb is not functional at all..

coming from a left hoopy myself, 2:13 is perfectly normal. I think maybe I misunderstood something but right left footwork is normal for left handed shooters. I'm even right handed outside of basketball just like Ben Simmons is. Please explain coach.

The problem with the foot placement could be due to the fact that he's right foot dominant i think, so he hop into the motion by pushing and standing majorly on his right leg

I just saw your video right at this moment. I’ve played basketball for over 50 years. I’ve been labeled a great shooter and understand the mechanics behind it. Excuse me for saying this, but you failed to mention his release point and hands placement on the ball while shooting. His release point before he shoots the ball is what appears to be at the center of his head or slightly to the left of center. Because of this ball placement of his release point, it causes his left elbow to flare out. If he moved his release point to closer to his left shoulder, it will automatically make his left elbow flare inward or closer to the side of his body, making his left wrist and elbow more perpendicular and underneath the ball. It appears his right hand is not in a proper position on the ball also, perhaps too close to his left hand. Sir, I would suggest you to set up Ben’s release point and move the ball closer to your left shoulder, you’ll see what I mean. I think foot placement is not his primary problem. I always thought Ben shot better with his right hand and had better touch while at LSU. Maybe he should change to shooting with his right hand. Good video, though. 👍

I as a leftie with major shooting issues can understand exactly what Ben's main issues are. I can definitely note that for some unknown reason, I tend to stay right or go right when I shoot, especially if I spin at all. I enjoy my turnarounds and spins, but again, I ONLY do it to my right. Going left my entire bodily mechanics shift greatly, especially off of movement unless it is a drive to the rim. I recently tried three spins and two turnarounds to my left because of how rare I find myself trying to do so, and it is wild how vastly different everything moves, works and feels. It's almost scary feeling. I assume a part of why this is on my end is because of how much weaker my lower left side is compared to my lower right. I am dominant on my lower right half, and dominant on my upper left. This actually has confused a fair few people, since to them, it is more normal to have the dominance all on one side, rather than in a opposites fashion like myself. (Though basic anatomy of the muscles systems quickly prove why it actually makes far more sense that I am split in that way.) When pivoting to my left off of the dribble, the momentum tends to push the ball strong to my outer left, while my lower half either over-rotates by a lot, or it under-rotates. It does the latter primarily if I am focusing on the control of planting my left foot down to shoot, while it most often does the prior in all other situations. Like you said, we have to fight our bodies when turning to our left, as we just have too much slack and thrust going into our left side. I also have the issue of not bending my knees enough. I also, like Ben, most often put most of the exiting thrust and power into my forearm, wrist, hand and fingers to get it to go the distance. However for me, my problem is not accuracy, but power output. I really have a major consistency issue with how far the ball goes upon release, especially the further out I go, unless it's Baseline. Baseline is a anomaly for me, simply because once I am baseline, for some reason it requires so so so much of a drastic alteration to my entire form, technique, aim, angle and pretty much everything else in order to finally get close to hitting any shots there. It is entirely different mechanically for me and I cannot understand how or why for the life of me. But move over just a couple feet and I suddenly am consistently getting rim, and hitting shots here & there. I just don't get how that's even possible. Back on the main topic here in this paragraph though, the range is wildly inconsistent. I'll consistently shoot the ball well over & past the top of the backboard, or, power it into the backboard up high and have it have it's first contact after the shot with the ground at around 12-16 feet from the backboard. Otherwise, I shoot short of the rim by 6"-2'. Not sure why this is. My form and release doesn't really change all that much until I really start to go deep outside of my own normal range, to around 30+ feet out. With the Baseline, I find far less frequently that I'll have a shot touch the rim at all that even outside shots for me. They most often drop feet short of the close side of the rim, or feet clear of the far side of the rim, with virtually no in-between. There is something to us being lefties and hosting such different mechanics to the shooting portion of the game. I can't put my finger on why that is, or how it is. But I would LOVE to figure this out. Typically the elbow isn't as much of a problem as it is for Ben here. I definitely have never had it THAT bad. But I don't exactly have the tightest elbow tuck either. In fact, most frequently I am told I have the shot release of Lonzo Ball, which also, is definitely not good, and obviously that says a lot about how horrible looking mine is. At least Ben's looks decent, even if the details are egregiously gregarious to a unaware defender or teammate haha.

BBALLBREAKDOWN I agree. The increase in confidence should equate to more attempts for him to build consistency. There are plenty of elite players who have their own unique forms of shooting that they’ve fine tuned into high efficiency.
