The Ultimate Guide to the Pull-Up // Master the Mid Range 🔬

Спорт

The pull-up, whether in the mid range or past that three point line, is a difficult shot. It involves a ton of moving pieces, and requires balance, strength, timing, proper footwork, and so much more. So I figured I'd cover at least some main keys in this first video to throw y'all some tips for pull-ups. Stay tuned for the next parts...

The mid range jump shot is the most valuable skill in basketball. The threat of the mid range commands attention from the defense more than the threat of the three. It's risky to give help to a teammate guarding a good three point shooter because it spreads the defense out too much and opens you up for easy baskets inside. Rather than double team, the on-ball defender will stay on the shooting hand of a good three point shooter and live with the shooter driving past him. The defense has more time to give help on a drive starting out from beyond the arc and the on-ball defender has more time to recover. Defenses give a lot more help on a good mid range shooter because they are not giving up as much space. Help defenders are leaning towards the shooter any time he's a threat to score in the midrange area. They are quick to give help because they have more time to get back to their own man. But if the mid range shooter decides to take the ball into the teeth of the defense, he drags those help defenders into deep water. If there are good three point shooters spotting up beyond the arc, they get EASY threes when the ball is kicked back out because they are wide open and can step into it. These are much higher percentage threes than if you have a player taking 5 or 10 dribbles beyond the arc to try to free himself for a three. I don't care how skilled that player is, that team is going to lose because they are playing a lower percentage game. But it all starts from FIRST being a THREAT from mid range. You are not a threat unless you can prove you can make that shot. I have seen many players who can shoot threes but do not have any mid range touch. They are not true ballplayers. It's similar to football, where most of the big yardage plays come from the passing game rather than the running game. I am sure a lot of analytics type people may think - 'Why bother running since we only get an average of 4 yards a carry whereas we get an average of 8 yards a pass?' Well you have to be able to run the ball to keep the defense honest. Any good offense starts with having a good running attack. It's the same thing in basketball. You have to be able to shoot the midrange because the midrange sets up the three. You can't just shoot threes all the time and expect to win.

One note about the leaning and low to drive around, but then suddenly pulling up: that takes strength. So, figure out what muscles need to be strong for that and work on 'em. Where the long-range shot is about accuracy, the mid-range has to be the whole body motion to get into a good position, fakery, the jump, and accuracy with a good arc despite being close to the hoop. It's a different beast.

Ya'll should watch Thinking Basketball's video on the midrange. Basically in the nba today, the midrange is great for scorers to exploit since defenses today have adjusted to defending the 3 and the paint as first priority and so can give alot of open shots in the midrange. Then once your star is killing with the midrange, defenses will be forced to focus more on defending that area, opening up opportunities for your role players shooting 3s or scoring in the paint. Harden should definitely start taking midrange shots again

after MJ its kobe who has the best mid range game, as he ages he combined his elite mid range game with crafty low post moves, after kobe i think melo is the next best out there when it comes to mid range game,he can bully with his power, blow by with his quick 1st step or just use a jab step then pull up, after melo then its CP3 with his pull up, cp3 uses his ball handling skills and his passing threat to do his trademark pull up jumper. pull jumper from mid range is one of the favorite go to moves of the NBA's elite scorer as it provides many options, u can either blow by a defender, bait at foul after a pump fake, create a scoring option for another team mate or just swish it. its not entirely dead but its about the culture and trend in basketball right now. mid range game and low post game will always be there, players who uses only one motion shots doesn't have a pull up thats why they prefer using a tear drop when penetrating.

I'm going to be honest, this video helped me a lot with my pullups when it first dropped. But the "delayed pickup" was poison for me. Notice that Kobe for example never picked up the ball on the second foot, always on the first when going 1-2. Same for me. It's just so much better for rythm, and you still have a lot of options with pump fakes and step throughs even if you get trapped. The hesi fake is a great move though if you do it calculated.

I think the midrange affects the game way different then the 3 ball or finishing at the rim cause those obviously directing helps you become more efficient and win games, but the midrange is more of a individual affect causing it demoralizes the defense knowing they cannot stop you at any level.

Although taking a long step when the defender is trying to catch up will leave him in a dust, if you take a long step then there is a better chance that another defender closes out or blocks your shot

You do need to be quick to pull most pull ups off. You can just step in and pull. Don't pull up against great defenders unless they're easy to read. Foot work is key.

Rbreezy melly lol what u mean he cant dunk, maybe u have not seen #8. And 1on1 no one stopping him, be it mj or bron or 2v1 bron and mj against him. Who knows, i have so much trust on the black mamba i think he can take on 2 alone. Bruh 5v1 id still trust he will sink the shot.

jimmy butler is now the only person to officially have a legit 40pt triple double in the finals because it's a win..jerry west and lebron both lost theirs..and he did it all mid range..so no the mid range is not dead when you pull those kind of numbers against a badass team i know this is new...but everyone got fascinated by curry so they started launching 3s when everyone dont realize theyre not curry.."but dame can pull this off all the time" not consistently..yah for a stretch but not all the way through to playoffs and then some..i feel like the good ol' egos of basketball took over and everyone started shooting and playing weird..it's like nobody plays d because nobody wants a 37ft 4-10 shot draining in their eye so they let em shoot it and it goes in keeping it at a bs stat when you could prioritize possessions.. it's like watching HS players now because the lead at the end of games would get out of control ha

it's important to be able to pull up because if a defender knows you'll only go all the way when you attack, he'll be able to push you off your spot and just force you into help; in game.
