Did A Vegan Diet Almost Kill Her?

All she had to do to stay vegan was avoid virtually all of the foods the rest of us enjoy on a daily basis. It's not that hard! (my response to "Going vegan made me lose weight and feel great, until I ended up in hospital needing a blood transfusion")

very true, also gaining weight is another. Inflammation responses in the gut can lead to weight gain and even more susceptibility to insulin resistance. So some people when switching to a vegan diet are actually reducing internal inflammation, and loose weight even without calorie reduction. Its one of my struggles with internal inflammation, especially in the gut with my food and non food allergies. I struggle to absorb vitamins and minerals sometimes enough that my hair falls out in clumps and my nails chip and break off, among other things.

My sister has severe IBS and the list of foods she can eat without cramping pain can fit on half a page (FODMAP). She cannot eat soy, legumes, and most grains. Basically she can only eat berries and some select vegetables. The ONLY major source of protein she can eat is meat. So it really bugs me when people say "anyone" can be on a vegan diet. My sister would literally starve.

I can so relate to this. I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 14, and there are plenty of vegan staples that just don’t work for me. Soy, coconut, rice, whole grain in general, and fibre rich veggies are a no no for me. I also have sensory issues because I’m neurodivergent, so stews, sauces and weird textures doesn’t work either. It’s extra frustrating when many do my friends are vegan and criticise eating meat when I’m there, because I cannot physically eat a vegan diet without being in constant discomfort. I try to eat as much plant-based as I can, but it’s still a struggle since others think you’re just faking it. It’s great to see that there are others who have similar issues, and other vegans understanding the difficulty for us.

As someone who is committed to living a Vegan life because of ethical and environmental reasons, I will do everything I can to avoid animal products... but if my health was deteriorating as hers did I would do what I had to do to survive. The point of being vegan isn’t perfection. It is to avoid using animals when it is possible and practicable. So many vegans need to stop throwing shade at others who are trying and doing their best. Give credit where it’s due but don’t bash people because they medically have to consume animals. Geez.

I feel like Ex-Vegans are punished the way people trying to leave a cult or religion are. There's so little compassion or care, a person leaving no matter what the reason is viewed as a threat to the community. It's so unhelpful because people considering interacting with the community are likely to be put off by this. Imagine being Vegan curious and reading some of these comment sections 😞😞😞

Right? I have a few vegan friends in Swayze's shoes, in that they're vegan, they stand by the ethical reasons and environmental science, but... They keep their interactions with the "vegan community" to a minimum, because of this cult-like mindset that they so often see. One of my exes pretty much much refuses to go near vegan blog comments, saying "I didn't leave the Mormons to be part of another cult."

A vegan diet definitely isn't for everyone. The problem with this article is that the headline and the way it's written leave people thinking "see, veganism just isn't for everyone, and that's why I'll never give up meat." Veganism still works for most people. The vast majority of people are not going to be allergic to all legumes plus onions and berries, while also being intolerant of iron supplements. This article could have been good for showing that, and driving home that even when a fully plant-based diet doesn't work, you can still significantly reduce your meat and animal consumption. But the author chose to be sensational instead.

I'm sure there are ways to do it, but I would still have a really really hard time getting enough calories to live normally. I don't blame this lady at all for feeling the way she did, I hope she found a diet that is safe and good for her overall health. That amount of weight loss definitely should always be a red flag to someone. I also know what it's like to not be taken seriously with medical problems (numerous doctors missed the obvious signs of illness over a 6 month period until I had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks because I was going to die). My sister was a vegetarian for 6 years until she needed her gallbladder removed and a lot of the foods she loved eating was making her sick all the time, so she had to change her diet, as well. Did everything in my power to do the diet just right, including spending $100s a month on supplements, injections, seeing professionals, etc. Still caused my system to fail. All I had to do was incorporate some local pasture raised beef, and am thriving more then ever before. I think taking a stance on gratitude for the lives that were given (so we can live), and realizing that pasture raised beef actually very much aids to supporting a sustainable ecosystem... really, it’s just all part of the circle of life... and this mindset ended up making me more mindful and grateful towards life in general since ending my veganism. At least that's what I've learned about it. People with the condition often have to get tubed to eat, or use a port. I'm not sure if mild gastroparesis could cause just cramping and discomfort rather than nausea, but constipation really sounds like an IBS thing. I would go to a gastroenterologist if were you. They can do a barium swallow test for you to see if your stomach digests food properly, along with your intestines. It's a very common, non invasive test.

As I slowly tried to add food back into my diet, I found that I could no longer tolerate beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, avocado, and leafy greens, you know, all that wonderful healthy stuff that I used to enjoy. Over the years I have occasionally experimented with a small amount of nuts or seeds and if I'm already feeling strong and I'm really super careful, I can digest them okay-ish. Being vegan (or even vegetarian) simply is not an option for me. Even the rice protein powder I have will bloat me up horribly if I'm feeling weak/in a flare. Multi-vitamins in particular are like this, because there is a range of vitamins that you might already get in your food, and your body will never need all of them. You don't look at a peice of fruit and say, "I won't eat that because I will deficate due to the fibre, I will just eat some sugar instead." Or at least I hope you don't. organicallyhannah Future RDN here. He’s actually wrong. It really depends on the multivitamin. Multi’s heavy in B vitamins and water soluble nutrients will result in the extra being lost in the urine. For fat soluble vitamins, sometimes they are excreted with feces like he said. But not 80% It seems like he was trying to disparage the need for a multivitamin. Which is so dangerous for those who need them. If you’re getting rid of 80% of the multivitamin, it probably means that you’re meeting most of your needs, which is good But that doesn’t make that 20% any less important. Advice like that is why I was iron deficient for years no matter what I ate. I thought a supplement was stupid and useless. Years ago I was vegetarian for a year. I had frequent, serious asthma attacks until I quit. It wasn't until decades later, when I was diagnosed as allergic to yeast and corn, that I realized that my problem with vegetarianism was that I'd been eating somewhat more bread. How many other people have given up on veganism or vegetarianism because they felt terrible due to an allergy or intolerance? A lot of vegan staples are allergenic to quite a few people (beans, peas, lentils, nuts, peanuts, grains, corn, yeast, avocadoes, and mushrooms, for example). Most of us don't stick with a diet until we're near death.

I've got a soy intolerance, I'm anaemic and can't really take supplemental iron (even two rice krispy treats is enough to stop me up for a couple of days), and a terrible case of GERD that I'm on omeperazole for. While it's technically _not impossible_ for me to go vegan, or even full-time vegetarian, my foodstamps allowance was recently cut nearly in half, to $102/month, so yeah, between all of my dietary needs and restrictions, being even vegetarian can be *prohibitively expensive*. I literally *cannot afford to* turn away meat from the food pantry, because there's a good chance that may be my only source of protein and iron for the month. I'm so glad that you have a level head about this, and that you understand that some people, if not for their budget than for their own individual biology, just cannot do vegan or even vegetarian full-time. Some of us just have to reduce our consumption of animal products as much as our wallets and bodies can afford to.

As a fellow vegan, I do appreciate your commitment. However, as much as it pains me to say it, I think you should consider including small quantities of animal products into your diet. What you are going through is hard enough, I see no reason why you should compromise your (already compromised) health. I'm not in any way suggesting you should eat meat every day, but maybe once a week would be enough to keep you healthy. It pains me to say that, and I say it knowing that I would struggle massively with even considering taking a bite of any meat after nearly ten years without it...but I don't think you occasionally eating animal products, just to keep your health afloat, is something you should immediately dismiss as an idea. I respect your commitment, and I appreciate your dedication to what I myself consider to be a very important cause, but your life is valuable too; your HEALTH is valuable. If you can't thrive on plant-based proteins, you NEED to find them elsewhere. (If any vegans disagree with what I've said, I'm sorry but I also care about humans, alongside other animals. Refreshingly reasonable for a vegan channel. I developed various food sensitivities on a vegan diet. Like this person beans, legumes triggered symptoms in me(nasal congestion, crippling fatigue and tummy upset). It made getting everything I needed impossible so I either stayed vegan and suffered or changed. I took supplements and remained vegan. I was so stuck in the ideology believing veganism was the healthiest diet and it would be impossible that eating meat would make me feel better that I ended up in a mobility scooter because I got so sick🤦🏻‍♀️ more vegan channels should acknowledge sometimes people are ex vegan for good reason.

I had to stop being vegan for similar reasons (serious food allergies making it impossible to stay healthy as a vegan - I’m allergic to all legumes, including soy. I’m also allergic to peas, green beans, and peanuts. Additionally, I have celiac disease, so no gluten, which rules out a lot of the alternatives made with gluten). Since I’m a tiny little channel very few people saw my video on it, but I talked about it in a video, and it’s still difficult months later to deal with having to eat meat. It’s not something I want to do. It’s certainly not something I want to do to the animals. People can say whatever they want about it, but it’s not a happy choice I made, and I have ended up eating the very minimal amount (of meat) I have to eat to remain healthy. I feel bad for this woman. She tried to make good decisions for her health, animals, and the planet. I guarantee it’s not easy for her. Thank you for making this video and using actual logic in addressing the comments. I still watch your stuff even as an ex-vegan because your channel is both entertaining and includes some good common sense! We need more of this in the world.

I’m in no way insinuating anything obviously but I am curious as to whether or not Tanya (sorry if spelling is wrong) was actually not eating enough. When I first started the vegan diet it was during the time I had an eating disorder, I became vegan because I could restrict my diet without anyone being concerned and if I did become weak I could say it was just my body getting used to the change. I lost about the same amount of weight Tanya was losing and also became severely anemic and just generally malnourished. I know a lot of other people with EDs also took on the vegan diet for the restriction. Of course I don’t put any genuine stock into this idea and of course Tanya had an allergy, but it’s just a thought. Everything aside I sincerely hope she’s doing better now.

I really feel for Tanya, and I'm glad the comments have improved. When you decide to be plant based for ethical reasons and then run up against serious health issues, it really f*cking sucks. I can speak to some experience on that. I was never vegan (although that was my end goal) but I was vegetarian for about 2 years after uni. Then I start running up against serious health issues characterized by severe GI distress. I too had a pain of a time getting a doctor to take my seriously and eventually I had to decide between staying vegetarian (my ethics) and eating food that I knew wouldn't upset my GI. I chose my personal health. Its been 4 years and I'm still fighting to find out what is wrong with my body (we know its an auto immune disease and I had/have chronic hives in my GI tract, but we don't know which autoimmune disease I have). I hope that once I get it figured out I can move back towards being more plant based, but for the time being, prioritizing my personal health is more important to me. Could Tanya still be vegan with a soy allergy? Sure she could but it sounds like it would take so much planning, time and effort that its probably just not feasible for most people and I can't blame her for that.

I can eat legumes in small doses, but I found it's hard to find them in small quantities in meals. Kinda sucks. Makes it much harder to go vegan or vegetarian. As I'm also lactose intolerant it's really a small step for me from vegetarian to vegan so I was quite excited to try. And the saddest thing is back when I still tried (maybe 3 years ago) I wanted to get help from more experienced people on the internet and the bs I got and all the insanity of this community made me kinda happy it's so hard for me to join it... @hannahmayhorn54664 жыл бұрын

Thanks for this video! :) Some people are asking what the difference was between her vegetarian and vegan diet, since there was such a drastic difference in the health outcome. If we're assuming the soy intolerance or allergy was her original problem, it makes a lot of sense. It's likely she wasn't intolerant to all beans and legumes at first. See, on a vegetarian diet, you don't have to eat soy unless you really want to. Sure, you can eat tofu or soy based mock meat, but you don't have to. Since she was still eating dairy products and eggs, she was probably exposed to very little, if any, soy. On her new vegan diet, she was probably exposed to soy yogurt, soy milk, soy egg replacements, soy cheese, and a lot of them, all at once. Eating a lot of anything you're intolerant to WILL cause nutrient deficiency eventually, because if your body can't digest the food it can't assimilate the nutrients from that food either. Eating food you're intolerant to will also irritate your intestinal wall, as she discovered - which can lead to more food intolerances developing if it keeps going. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened to her. So she was eating something she was intolerant or allergic to regularly, probably lost at least some of the weight due to malabsorption from that, developed nutrient deficiencies, developed more food intolerances, and became very, very tired. It makes sense, right? She was wrong in thinking she could avoid iron supplementation by just eating more iron rich plant foods, because even an anemic person with great digestion wouldn't be able to get enough iron from food alone to restore healthy levels. It's hard enough just getting the RDI from food alone, from personal experience, lol. I have to take an iron supplement every day :/. Beyond that, though, her digestion was very bad at this point from continually eating food she was intolerant to, which would make it even harder. If she had talked to her doctor about it, the doctor might have had some suggestions to alleviate the constipation from supplementing. But, I do understand not wanting to talk to your doctor about too many things... Her situation got much worse from there, though, because not supplementing iron and not being able to get much of any from food because of her digestive issues led to anemia so bad her organs were starting to shut down. And the intestinal irritation from her food intolerances was so bad it was causing bleeding! And probably causing even more food intolerances to develop...such a vicious cycle. She didn't get sick because she was eating only mashed potatoes and tea, she was eating only mashed potatoes and tea because her digestion was so bad at that point, she didn't know what to eat or what to do anymore. My husband has been there before with his digestive issues and even put himself on a liquid diet because he was so desperate and confused at one point. Good idea? No. Relatable? Yes. Even though the headline was sensational, technically a vegan diet did almost kill her. What happened to her wouldn't have happened if she hadn't gone vegan, because soy would have never become a large part of her diet. Her life matters, and if she has to eat some meat right now to stay alive, then it's really sad but of course it's worth it for her to be able to live. Why accuse her of lying or not trying hard enough? With a severe food intolerance to soy and now every kind of bean and legume, too, she has no way to get protein or iron from plants right now. Except for the smaller amounts in whole grains, nuts, and vegetables. Let's have a little compassion?

I'm in a similar situation, I couldn't stay vegan because of health problems but I never said or will never say that it was a vegan diet problem or that a vegan diet is not healthy, but I still recieved mean comments from my friends, vegan and non vegan ones too. It's unfair to blame the person for not doing it right when sometimes is our body that fight against us. Like for me I'm eggs and lactose intollerant, legums of any tipes give me excruciating colics (I tried for 3 years before giving up on them) and I can't eat soy because it was aggravating significantly my thyroid desease. With no proteins options left I had to get back to eat meet and fish, but I try to eat less of it as possible. But no, I still got negative reaction because I didn't find a solution or it was only an excuse. Unfortunately a vegan diet is not for everyone, don't be mean to people

Shit, I feel bad for her. She clearly had moral reasons for being vegan, and I can't imagine not only going through all those brutal health problems, but also having to do something you're morally opposed to in order to just be reasonably healthy. But it's great that she's still trying instead of doing what a lot of ex-vegans end up doing and trying to say "well... forget all my moral arguments I made before... my meat is... ethically sourced and shit..." She seems like a nice, genuine person.
