I would go a long way to hear Gaughan sing this beautiful spine tingling song. My all time favourite. I once spent the winter in The Gambia, West Africa, and happened to see that he was performing in Bristol. What a good reason to go back home. A friend had a spare ticket and was ale to see him. I said I travelled several thousand miles for the pure enjoyment of seeing him and hearing him sing. Of course he sang this.
This man must be one of the most under-rated artists on the planet. His touch and interpretation of this is nothing short of magnificent. Proud to say I have admired him, his work and his politics, for decades. How come people such as Mr Gaughan so often go unsung while the less deserving (in my opinion) reap knighthoods and medals come the New Year's Honours?

Once there was a beautiful man called John Peel. His opinion on music will eternally be valid.. John Peel publicly stated that Dick Gaughan was the best singer he has ever heard 😢 amazing rendition...I live next to a 23 ft high statue of Robert Burns.. Dick Gaughan will always be thought of x
For those of you who have never experienced the pure joy of this man, your life is incomplete.
My late husband’s favourite poem by Burns , sang here so beautifully, l can hardly bare to listen as the memories of our happy marriage of almost 41 years remembering happy times makes me weep.

Dick Gaughan is an absolute legend. Caught him last year at Universal Hall Findhorn and he was mesmerising with voice and guitar better than ever. Long may he continue championing the struggle.

Aye, he deserves it, and man, Dick helps him along, but a man's a man who picks up a Burns book with a bottle o' whisky on hand!
Gaughan's version was the first I was exposed to. It still takes my breath away.
Dick spent several days at my house in Michigan, back in the good old days when Compuserve was the only thing close to social media. That was where we met. Haven't seen or heard from him in many years but, as I recall his visit, we enjoyed the time but I think Dick enjoyed my llamas even more. Love to you, my friend. Voice as golden as ever. Fond memories.
This is beautiful, I could listen to this over and over again, in fact I am!! Thankyou so much.
Class!
the timing of the lyrics!!!!

thefilmlabuk His mastery of ry is uncanny and highly personal.
Have seen Dick live many times, always a great experience. Miss him performing
This is so much better than the recorded version of Westlin Winds - love the way Gaughan expresses the song. Perfect song and interpretation.
Gaughan’s voice is magic.
Listen to the Blind Old Dogs version of this called Song for Autumn. Beautiful song, beautifully sung by both Dick Gaughan and BOD.

Isn't it Old Blind Dogs?
Now westlin winds and slaught'ring guns Bring Autumn's pleasant weather; The moorcock springs on whirring wings Amang the blooming heather: Now waving grain, wide o'er the plain, Delights the weary farmer; And the moon shines bright, when I rove at night, To muse upon my charmer. The partridge loves the fruitful fells, The plover loves the mountains; The woodcock haunts the lonely dells, The soaring hern the fountains: Thro' lofty groves the cushat roves, The path of man to shun it; The hazel bush o'erhangs the thrush, The spreading thorn the linnet. Thus ev'ry kind their pleasure find, The savage and the tender; Some social join, and leagues combine, Some solitary wander: Avaunt, away! the cruel sway, Tyrannic man's dominion; The sportsman's joy, the murd'ring cry, The flutt'ring, gory pinion! But, Peggy dear, the ev'ning's clear, Thick flies the skimming swallow, The sky is blue, the fields in view, All fading-green and yellow: Come let us stray our gladsome way, And view the charms of Nature; The rustling corn, the fruited thorn, And ev'ry happy creature. We'll gently walk, and sweetly talk, Till the silent moon shine clearly; I'll grasp thy waist, and, fondly prest, Swear how I love thee dearly: Not vernal show'rs to budding flow'rs, Not Autumn to the farmer, So dear can be as thou to me, My fair, my lovely charmer!

I love this and Jim Malcolm's versions of this beautiful song.
The Master. Will always love him.
@maclink1 Hi - The show featured three songs from Gaughan. The other two were "Both Sides The Tweed", with Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, and "Freedom Come-All-Ye". I've put all three on KZread.
