A RED, RED ROSE by Robert Burns, sung by Andy M. Stewart

Ойын-сауық

It's one of the Bard of Scotland's great poems, sung by Andy M. Stewart with Gerry Butler as Rabbie Burns. 18th and 19th century Scottish paintings and etchings were adapted as the background, and a number of actresses portray Burns' wife and many loves. One can only hope that the movie about the life of Robert Burns will one day be made. If anyone can do it, Gerry Butler is the man.

O my Luve's like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve's like the melodie That’s sweetly song in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry: Till a’ the seas gang dry, my love, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun: I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee well, my only Luve And fare thee well, a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.

Robert Burns, like so many of the great and mighty poets and artists, taken too young like so many of these great singers of his immortal songs, stirring a love for the Scottish highlands even for those of us who have yet to visit...

Agreed! I learned more from Andy than I ever have elsewhere. He taught me that folk signing involved accompanying yourself. We shared a few stories in the Bon Accord bar in Glasgow, and he was the embodiment of humanity and decency. In the Bard's words ... I will love thee still my dear, 'ere the sands o' life shall run? If only we had Andy to sing it for us today ...?

He didn't technically write it. it already existed in scottish folk culture, and he, more or less, popularized it (by publishing it) and made it a symbol of their independence from the politically dominant england.

Burns wrote the POEM. It was a POEM. It was turned into a song (with a chorus, because the poem only had the stanza once) by "modern-day" musicians.

@@koalateacontent5094 You have it in reverse. Robert Burns wrote the poem, and then later published it as a song loosely using an already-existing Scottish folk tune. It is with the same respect as Scots Wha Hae, only that tune Tuttie Tatie is far more ancient and can be traced back at the very least to 1314.

In college, PBS had a couple singing many of his songs at the end of Masterpiece Theater. I fell deeper in love with his words and music. A close friend, who has a beautiful tenor voice, sang this at our wedding.
