Diaphragm Vacuum: Strength through Breathwork

The Diaphragm is perhaps the most important muscle in the body. In this video Jill demonstrates two versions of Uddiyana Bandha aka diaphragm vacuum, to help you assess your diaphragmatic range of motion, become more comfortable being without air, and massage your viscera (internal organs). These exercises will also give you insight into how much tension you may be holding around your mid-line.
Be curious and follow along with Jill as she leads you through these two exercises. Try the diaphragm vacuum on the floor and move to standing when you feel comfortable with the first exercise.

    Great question! We suggest keeping the spine neutral. Any shifts in the spine will affect diaphragm attachments in different ways (which you may want to do as an exploration). But to lengthen the diaphragm on its true axis of pull, spine is neutral.

    @@TuneUpFitness Hello 👋 My natural inclination upon doing this exercise was to pull the abdomen taught, having heard the quo relaxing my abdomen the 'stretched' transfered it's way perpendicularly to the diaphragm. Do I want to maintain that pull of the diaphragm or should I try and let that go as well? I ask to try and get a better handle on the internal mechanics of the exercise and what it's trying to make happen in my body. I'll be playing around with it and acquainting myself with different resting and active orientation till then. Thanks for your input and generosity 🤗

    Good morning, I have been interested in the topic of breathing for several years. When traveling by bus, I often try to breathe only the volume of air "in my nose" I was interested in the topic of breathing reduction... can you "get to know" your breathing capabilities/limits during the classes? determining the minimum number of breaths per minute or minimum tidal volume. Are there methods using re-breathing or breathing with a lean oxygen mixture? supervision of an instructor, maybe somewhere, someone conducts some interesting experiments related to breathing?

    So basically the vacuum simply spreads the ribs, which then pull the diaphragm because the diaphragm is attached to the ribs and that creates a stretch for the diaphragm? So is this simply a good stretch for this breathing muscle?

    I used to do this a lot as a kid to freak people out lol. To me it feels like I'm just breathing out gently and normally (when I do it fully like she says it's harder), then breathe in but block it at my throat. Try holding a big scream or cough in and feel how your body is trying to breathe out but it's stopping in your throat. Then do the same thing but inward. Imagine you're underwater with empty lungs and stopping yourself from inhaling until you make it to the surface. Does that work?

  • @ashwilliams8518

    @ashwilliams8518

    Another way to get it to happen is to breathe out slowly but interrupt it with a bunch of gentle coughs. It sounds like an exasperated "ugh" sound. Then inhale and keep doing the cough motion with your throat. Once you feel it, hold the throat closed and breathe in harder. Your guts should suck up under your ribs.

Now today this morning i wanted to do it again, but didn't seem to be able to do it at first. But after a few tries i could and it seems crucial for this exercise. It's a bit hard to explain, but make sure you sigh all air out and then try to feel the front bottom of your rib cage and push a little downwards with your rib cage while feeling that area.

    @@ummabdullah7601 There was a cue in the video to not pull the stomach taught and to actually let the abdomen relax. When I lifted the ribs I could actually feel the abdomen spreading upwards which made the whole area even more released. And I could feel a tangible pull at the diaphragm which give me the opportunity to release any stuck tension by being as neutral and relaxed as possible. ***I'm going to have to double check with Jill But I think we're supposed to create a tension deferential in the torso where the ribs hold relatively more tension (no where near maximum) compared to the abdomen which encourages and invites the diaphragm to loosen up a little bit. Hope it helps and that you could feel a difference between tight abs and loose stomach/viscera

    I would say kind of how you pull your stomach in except that you're pulling at your ribs from the sides, kind of from around the same place that someone carrying you as a child would hold you from, maybe a bit lower Hope that helps 🙏 P.s. Doing that will create a bit of a tug at the abdomen, but that's something we would want to release as mentioned in the video

    I trained weightlifting for many, many years without any issues. With time, I got lazy and started training less and less, then I had a case of headache that I already fixed but I stayed sedentary for an entire month. After starting aerobic exercise (30 minutes per day, 5 days a week) to deal with depression/anxiety now I have this issue that I spend the rest of the day feeling like breathing is hard. I am taking exams, lungs are perfect in tomography, heart is perfect, spirometry was fine as well. Sometimes I feel like my diaphragm is weak since I always ignored cardio/aerobic and went for the weight room so my stamina is terrible. Thoughts? I wonder if there is a way to better condition my diaphragm.

    one guy replaces HIIT with a trick of walking very very slowly totally relaxing and slow as a retard and then radically start running as if chased by a lion for life and repeating after pulse goes to norm again takes 5 minut gives even better results than HIIT with progression (faster and faster) try buteyko method and stretching because it may be like me not only sedentary lifestyle per se and lymph not moving enough but also apnea and falling basic CO2 level (I'm taping lips when sleeping, keeping window open a bit at night, made inclined bed lots of simple things making huge difference) NSDR before sleep too but all goes to shit if I do something exciting before going sleep or going sleep later than 22:00 you can also humm to increase NO production - probably the biggest lifehack out there increases oxidising of blood and cells also improving blood flow (big thing for me because I have weak circulation hands get very cold very fast in winter) it's also good to make one fast breath from time to time, body does it naturally every 5 minutes to free lungs capacity to full back

    I have had a lot of luck taking a deep breath in and then imagine putting a belt on while my lungs are full. The belt should be tight and should be just a couple inches under the sternum. Then, as I exhale, I imagine trying to keep the belt on and up. This keeps ribcage amd diaphragm expanded the whole time in a 360 way. When I first started, I would lay on my back and put a couple of books on my belly. Not too heavy until you’re stronger. Then take a big belly breath and as you exhale, keep your belly holding the books up as you exhale for as long as you can. You should feel like you’re sticking your belly out as you exhale. It is a weird feeling but I dig it lol. Just imagine this as weightlifting for your diaphragm. I’ve made some real gainz and I hope you do too! 🎉

    She may not know. Very often intuitive, spontaneous movements/ideas come through all kinds of people, from all over the world. Yoga itself, as well as Qi Gong, are latent body knowledge that naturally comes through the body when relaxed and present enough to allow the movement without resistance. This is how the forbearers of yoga discovered it in the first place. They did not invent yoga. They discovered it, when it came naturally through the body in spontaneous movements. This has happened to me many times. And I have never "learned" yoga. Meditate long enough and your body may start to move spontaneously, too. Then you might show someone you think it may help. And so on.
