Diagnosis NOX Catalytic Converter with INPA - Is it lost its effectiveness?

- BMW E91 2008 Touring engine N43B20A
- Misfire counter detects random misfires?
- Fault code 30EA: nitric oxide catalytic converter, sulphurized
- Hunting the cause of the misfires!
- Situation: Spark plugs and Ignition coils are ok
- All Injectors, lambda sensors and CCV with valvecover, NOx sensor are replaced with new ones.
- Forced desulphation session and deleting long-term fuel trims are done after new parts.
- Re-learning process is still in progress...
- No any leaks in exhaust or intake system.

- Fuel injectors have been leaking for a long time; Cause of NOx Catalytic converter loss of efficiency?
- Content of sulfur level JUMPED to high level suddenly?!
- Resetting adaptations with the INPA program will also reset the calculated content of sulfur level.
- This causes that, the calculated content of sulfur level will recorded to DME will be incorrect
- it can be harmful to the performance of the NOx catalytic converter
- ISTA-D will not reset sulfur level of NOX Catalytic Converter.
- In the future: delete the old DME adaptations, using ISTA D and create new adaptations, using INPA
- Chemical tests, Integrators, offset type LTFT, multiplicative type adaptions LTFT, opening time, flow-rate data, electric charge, Voltages,
Learnbits, adaptions, Homogeneous mode, stratified charge mode, Idle and partial load

    Hi Jani, thank you very much for these perfect videos about N43 motor. I love this motor but it is very expensive for maintenance. I have new NOx original BMW. But still not very clear how desulphation works. Not sure if all information on bimmerprofs are correct. Do you mean that their info is from BMW source? Some questions: 1) I have around 500mg and no faults. Why you mean that this small amount is critical? Total bank is 4000mg. 2) I have also offset sensor in negative (-4). What does it mean? 3) High exhaust heat is really problem. To have over 550°C I must drive over 150km/hod on 5 gear. On 6 gear it is around 450°C. 4) Lambda is almost all time on 1 therefore desulphation cannot start. I was successful only one time. When I have under 400g it never starts.

    Great video and explanation of the process! Does the car performs the cleaning by itself in normal circumstances (when driving at high speeds and that temp gets over 580C) or do you have to force it from inpa to start it?

    Thanks! Under normal conditions, it executes them automatically as soon as the assigned values are met. The problem is short runs and speed limits ...

    N43/N53 engines have NOx system with NOx catalytic converter included in it. You can try this and hope it helps. I doubt it will help any more than momentarily if the error code is 30E9. And if that doesn't help then the options are to replace the NOX Catalytic Converter which is really expensive as a new one around € 2000 or one option is to take open that NOX Catalytic Converter and try to clean it physically. I will try this myself during the coming summer. Or you can go in the direction of NOXEM.

    @@JaniVoutilainen thanks Jani, just did a long drive unfortunately without INPA and the forced regeneration, because I didn't manage to find a version on which I can start the regeneration like in the video. Unfortunately no success with 30E9, but the other two errors are gone 2b07 and 2b06. Hope your cleaning goes with success, if it does please share a video :)

    I also had this jump of sulfur content to 3500 mg, and yes, it was due to a few times I was resetting adaptations without performing desulfation. After that, I don't know if it would record 30EA, but it didn't. Also, if your lambda doesnt reach 20..30 quite quickly, could be air leak in exhaust system. (thats what bimmerprofs also say) But, im not sure. My oem sensor was reaching 32 quite quick in 5 sec. noxem, which i installed would reach 22.24. but also quick. I guess its fine cause its not oem, maybe bosch doesnt reach that high. But, in your case also offset is negative which weird. maybe bimmerprofs has something about it. But, you just bought new oem nox. Hmm maybe they have warranty and you can return i dont know. Also, one of your injectors had 1 mg/st offset, which quite high i think? but, i think as long as you dont have big missfires, its all good. also, after 30EA my car would never turn stratified mode on. I dont why yours could do that. What else you could try, is to update your DME. but, i wouldnt i think your works as mine. (I have the latest version)

    DME software has updated with latest version already. I am quite sure that the exhaust system does not leak. The stratified charge also goes on with a 30ea fault code for a while. But then less often. But when the fault lasts longer, the Stratified charge no longer works. For example, in the video after the burning run, the Stratified charge went on after a while when I reset the DTCs on the fly. And after a while, even the last adaptation went on. I can already reveal that I did a reset of the adaptations there with ISTA-D and the two Learbits refuse to go on (2 top right balls witch indicating that the NOX sensor is faulty) and the stratified charge refuses to turn on. Also, I did the NOX sensor lambda evaluation test again after resetting and now this NOX sensor does not get 20 at all, remains in any of the 15. This test shows that that chemical element of the lambda probe from the NOX sensor is "clogged". If anything positive, then Learnbits last ball from the bottom right went on almost immediately ;) I think those offset values will change as long as the NOX system is OK. Let's see what happens.

    hi Jani 1. when i do desulphation my exhaust heats to 800 degress, and deas it quckly (reach this temp), also driving on 6th gear was always better then on 5th. 2. when my dme records 30ea (at about 450mg sulphur) at that moment i see offset type LTFT going up when error is stored (reacher mixture when engine in homogenous mode) lambda value at moments goes like 0.80. 3. last adaptation shows black when i do 140kmh on motorway, and then it stays white when city driving. 4. in my case stratified charge mode is available even with 30ea stored, but i do clearing as soon as possible when the error shows up

    Wenn man jetzt nicht selber einleiten würde. Wir sehen die Werte dann aus wenn man über 110 kmh fährt und temperatur auch über 590 Grad ist geht der nox Wert nicht runter? Also wenn man ganz normal auf der Autobahn fährt

    Hi Jani, Thanks for your great channel. I have also have a N43 engine, but once it turns on stratified charge, it becomes very noisy. I did some diagnostics with INPA, and what I did found out is that the “schubabschaltung”-value is 11ppm. This is too high. What does this actually mean? Also the overrun mode test takes about 10 seconds. Is there any correlation between a noisy engine in stratified charge and incorrect values of NOX-sensor?

    Hi! How old is your NOX sensor? It means that the chemical element is clogged from the NOX sensors probe and it needs to be replaced or you can try to clean the NOX sensor probe. In the middle of this project, I noticed that when the NOX sensor sensor was cleaned, it helped with that and that value dropped closer to zero. For you, I would try a force burning run and then use the NOX sensor off the exhaust and clean the probe. This can also affect that overrun mode test ... When the engine is running in Stratified charge mode, the engine running car sounds a little different. Have you checked the NOX Catalytic Converter sulfur “poisoning” value? How high is the value in it? Hope you can solve the problem 👍

    @@JaniVoutilainen Hi Jani, thanks for your reply. My NOX-sensor is about 3 years (30000 km) old. I am not sure if it has been replaced correctly. It had been replaced by a non-BMW specialist under warranty shortly after I bought the car. Maybe they put in some cheap aftermarket stuff or didn’t program it correctly with ista. The sulphur poisoning level seems fine. Last time I checked it was 250. I will try a forced burn and cleaning the sensor. Hopefully that helps. Thanks again for your help and your great videos!

    Great knowledge you have there, but there is one problem. When you navigate through these menus, i totally loose you and i cannot follow where you go in the Inpa. My inpa is a bit different, i have tried installing several versions, but for example i still miss the injector menu (shift+f6) In 13:42 of your video you go from Adaption gemish to MSD80 Systemtest betrieb..... no Mather how much i search in my inpa i cannot find this menu. If you can help me i would be very grateful, cuz my e92 n43 is giving me so much pain and i dont know what to do anymore. Changed 2 injectors, with new seals and rings, but still rough running, and smell of petrol on startup. And bunch of NOx and lambda error codes, deleted them, deleted the adaptations. it runs a bit better but still smell of petrol on startup and rough idle sometime. If you put in your videos like subtitle how you navigate in these menus it will be very helpful. Thanks

    Try to change your crankshaft position sensor brother. I did it on mine because it ran rough after tinkering with the old CPS and now tjankfully I have solved it.

    I think Stratified charge nor Homogeneous lean modes will no longer work after that. After delete NOX, only in Homogenous mode works...

    Hi, have a look at NOXEM 130 emulator. I will get it installed in a few days. I've done a bit of reading, it seems that you lose stratified mode after NOX delete so it's a bad solution.

    I’ve got long crank start problems with my n43, last Friday changed my crankshaft sensor and lufftmess meter. Didn’t work for me. Now the bmw will go to a mechanic hopefully he can fix it😭

    Did you examine the high pressure fuel sensor? These can fail sometimes causing long crank starts

    When the engine is cold there is no problem, the long crank start come up when the engine is hot. I drove 1 hour, park my car and 30 minutes later its a very bad crank.

    @@anonymuis701 my n43 having bad start 2 out of 10 times but it have to be hot weather and never first start of the day.. i know it sounds weird but true
