Those with Type 2 Diabetes are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease. High blood sugars can damage arteries, and increase oxidation stress and inflammation. Inflammation can increase LDL levels due to decreased LDL receptors' activity. Inflammation also increases the permeability of blood vessels, allowing LDL particles to make their way into the sub-endothelial space. This is where the atherosclerotic process can begin.
We can improve our blood sugar control and improve our heart health by:
- Having balanced meals, with sufficient protein, whole-food carbohydrates, healthy fats, and non-starchy vegetables. By prioritizing these sources of food, we will increase our intake of key nutrients that are required for optimal heart health.
- Doing resistance training to increase and maintain muscle mass is important for both blood sugar control and cardiovascular health. Moving enough throughout the day is also crucial to obtain the full benefits from exercise, but also for blood sugar control
- We need to be sleeping enough and managing stress.
