Dhruv Rathee is Wrong, India's Debt is NOT a Problem | NIFTY 50 | SCE | NIKKIE 225 - Indraanil Guha
Recently, Dhruv Rathee, who is a vocal critic of India’s BJP-led federal government put out a tweet, in which he presented some figures, through which he was essentially trying to suggest that over the last 10 years that the BJP has been in power, India’s national debt has spiraled out of control! Now this is something that must be examined threadbare, since, if Rathee is even remotely right, it will have grave implications for our national economy as well as for our markets, because history is very clear about this - whenever the national debt of a country starts to spiral out of control, it always ends badly!
In this video, I present a framework to classify the national debt of any country into 6 broad buckets, and what are the implications for the economy and markets are in case of each of these 6 buckets. Also, in this video I try to look at India’s national debt through the lens of the performance of our stock market, because it is the stock market of any country that has historically been always the first to detect and flag the dangers, whenever the debt of any country starts to spiral out of control and the future growth prospects of that country is NOT sufficient to support the orderly and timely repayment of that debt.
Do watch to understand if our national debt is indeed a problem for us or not!

    Thank you Sir, we needed someone to speak against the autocratic Dhruv Rathee…… if you see his comment section he is not open to proper counter argument, which makes him autocratic. Any sane person who knows the matter deeply can counter him easily. Anyways, just one suggestion….. if you can shorten your main explanation points and provide rest of video for those who are interested further…. That would help you gain more views ….. just a suggestion

    Thanks so much Sir! You have put in so much effort into making such a comprehensive video. As a small time retail investor, it is terrifying to see people like Dhruv Rathee give their 2 pennies on Indian economy. We are not in a position to verify it ourselves. This video is such a relief.

    I agree Debt to GDP ratio is good performance metric. It doesn't matter whether central or state debt to GDP, we have to track at India level. Debt is like necessary evil. In addition, we need to understand if debt is external debt or internal debt. NDA government reduced external debt and increased internal debt. We have seen huge government investment in infrastructure.

    Not being political here too....but please clarify about GDP ...Akshat Srivastava recently put out a video that the GDP numbers didn't add up. There are 3 ways to calculate GDP and using these 3 methods the final results of all 3 methods should at least be close and not out of whack. Whereas the calculation this time does not add up. What do you have to say about this? So if Debt to GDP is important... *what if GDP numbers are not reflected correctly??* Another thing....how wisely is the external debt being spent....are we building great infrastructure like Singapore? As for states not managing debt and blaming the center it's rather internal debt and that's debatable.

    Its very true the GDP numbers are fudged. Even a naysayer economist can figure that out. The growth is around 3.5 % only . If u take old GDP calculation before 2015 the growth will come to around 2% only. Go out outside there is no jobs, no small business flourishing. This is not what happens in 8% growth economy. Pre farce stats.

    The credit card interest which shouldn't be added to gdp growth, as its neither a good nor exactly a service . It usury in a sense different from bank loans but these are also included now and it makes up large part of Us gdp right now . If you remove these abnormalities Russian economy would easily be in top 5 . Every economy on planet does that , as long as international institutes like Morgan Stanley ,standard and poor, goldman doesnt say much.. its still within permissible limits Also, 7-8% is gdp in real terms and gdp in nominal terms is 7-8 % + 6 -7% inflation i.e around 14-16% growth ,thats precisely stock market growth rate . Are there a lot of accounting issues yes Is there manipulation , yes Is better data required ,definitely Is it a thing to worry about right now ,no not yet India still has 10 years after which problems will start

    Great content. Thank you. One question though. In another video, there is an investment strategy for us Indians that you advised. And that in itself is based on US liquidity. I presume India’s ability to invest in productive infrastructure must be linked to US liquidity and hence that strategy. I also went through your website but it mentions ULIP somewhere that made me a bit sceptical. Can you clarify the exact offerings you have?

  • @IndraanilGuha

    @IndraanilGuha

    Ай бұрын

    We offer a bunch of proprietary investment strategies to our paying customers, which involve continuously moving the portfolio between equity and debt funds, based on our market outlook. We tend to have a high equity exposure in our client portfolios when liquidity conditions are easy (as they continue to be right now) and reduce equity exposure in our client portfolios as and when liquidity conditions start to tighten. This approach has helped us reliably sidestep large equity market corrections in the past! However, when such rebalancing is carried out at frequent intervals using mutual funds and/or ETFs and/or direct stocks, the resulting gains attract taxation basis the rates applicable for “short term capital gains”, which are significantly higher than the tax rates applicable in case of “long term capital gains”. Hence we do NOT use mutual funds and/or ETFs and/or direct stocks for executing our investment strategies. Instead we use a new breed of very low-cost ULIPs called “Zero-Allocation Charge ULIPs”, which have an expense ratio that is lower than that of mutual funds for executing our proprietary investment strategies. If you are interested to know more about these strategies and about the low-cost ULIPs we use for executing the strategies then you can email / WhatsApp us on the email address / WhatsApp number provided in the description of the video

    I think he already explained in this video very well, but let me attempt to explain you: Taking loan and spending on infrastructure generally consider as good for developing countries like India. When govt spend money on building roads, bridges, improve railways and airports, it will start generating businesses good returns to country because of the connectivity goods can transport faster specially perishable. This will result in more demand and supply. Eventually increase in GDP. This thing stock market consider it well eventually good returns on your investments. Hope this helps.

    The work going on in infrastructure development is unprecedented. Expressways, Railways, Airways are in an expansion mode and tax collected alone is not sufficient to fund these many infra projects. So even if debt is increasing but as it is spent on infrastructure that debt itself becomes an investment that will help propel the economy.

    Excellent podcast, Sir.Analysis and Data representation is up to the 100% to the subject. Jimmy Dimon, CEO of J P Margan Chase Bank, recently commented in his lecture that Modi Govt. had brought out 40 cr. Indian Population out of Poverty line. But Modi Govt. running campaign to feed 80 Cr. Population on free ration for next 5 years. My question is how much population is under Indian poverty line?

    Sir in earlier couple of videos you indicated that after fed cut rate our market can possibly crash and we are near end of economic cycle ( and that its not that we are in middle of long term bull market) but in this video you have share that there are great prospects of Indian market and rising debt will have positive effect. Arent these both views contradictory? I am really confused will be great if you can help clarify my doubts. Thanks in advance!

  • @IndraanilGuha

    @IndraanilGuha

    Ай бұрын

    You are mixing two different things... once Fed starts cutting rates, my view is that we will have the onset of a recession in US kick in soon there-after... this will mark the end of the business cycle and is also likely to be accompanied by a large market correction in the US and around the world. However, India taking on more debt and building more and more infrastructure with that debt is a process that is likely to span over many decades, during which time, we will see multiple business cycle. So while I am skeptical about a market correction in the near term, as and when this business cycle comes to an end, I can still be very bullish on India long term because of the multiplier effects on the economy as a result of rapid infrastructure development

    Sir, Truely informative video. If you can please cover Debt to GDP as a separate topic? Do you see USA defaulting in future given that every 100 days, they add about $1tn as a debt. How can they reduce the debt without any increase in Inflation.

  • @IndraanilGuha

    @IndraanilGuha

    Ай бұрын

    Many thanks for these super kind words... glad you liked the video I do NOT see US defaulting on their debt... most of the US debt is in their own currency and a country can NEVER default when the debt is in its domestic currency... in such cases, the country concerned has the extraordinary privilege of just printing money and returning the money to lenders when it it time to repay the debt! But that's NOT to say that there is no cost to pay for such profligacy... over time, the currency is bound to lose value as a result of such reckless money printing. In fact this is exactly the kind of abuse of the reserve currency status that has led to the downfall of every reserve currency in history, and the eventual decline of the US Dollar because of similar abuse will be a story that's no different!

    Many thanks, glad you liked the content! I try to refrain from commenting on policies such as demonetization on public forum because the kind of times we live in, the response to any such comment tends to be invariably along very partisan lines! But if I must, I personally believe that the intent behind of the policy was obviously very worthy i.e. to weed out black money! But if we evaluate the outcome purely based on the amount of money that finally was deposited back into bank accounts, then one has to admit that almost the entire amount of money in circulation came back and to that extent, demonetization was arguably NOT able to achieve its fundamental goal. Having said that, the evaluation of such far-reaching policies can hardly ever be in pure black and white! For e.g., while NOT the key intent behind the policy, the kind of push digital payments and UPI got as a result of demonetization is something that I guess would have taken over10 years to be realized in normal scheme of things!

    Sir you have mentioned the US also printed money to monetize its govt deficits but you haven't talked about it. We agree that Japan and China have a slow growth rate due to debt in local currency. But the US market is doing extremely well. Pls explain about this.

    US debt levels are unsustainable and everyone knows that. It's a train-wreck in the making in slow-motion... but this will take decades to fully play out... NOT something that will cause any major disruptions in the very near future! And that's why US dollar is NOT weakening meaningfully despite gargantuan amounts of debt and even more gargantuan amounts of money printing to fund this debt pile! Ultimately, the laws of economics are bound to catch up and even the mighty US economy will NOT be able to evade the sort of growth slow-down which has now been long underway in Japan and China. But for now, the US economy admittedly continues to be unaffected, and in my view this is because of the extraordinary privilege of the US dollar being the reserve currency of the world! But this is exactly the kind of abuse of the reserve currency status that has led to the downfall of every reserve currency in history, and the eventual decline of the US Dollar because of similar abuse will be a story that's no different!

    I am not a real estate / housing market expert, but my first principle thinking suggests that as and when there is a big drawdown in equity markets, that should have a spillover effect on the real estate markets too... so such times should be good not just for picking stocks at a bargain, but for buying housing properties at a discount too!

    I think inflation is not just decided only the things you buy daily. Its about all goods and services together. Lets say if current interest rate is 1% so you will start buying may be AC, fridge and go on vacation even on loan and probably thinking for buying a new home. And other people will react like you eventually inflation spike. Hope this clear to you.
