Indian think tanks, Congress’s inevitability, ‘Ram’ in election campaigns | Hafta FULL EPISODE 480

Tune in wherever you get your podcasts: pod.link/582585399/episode/e1...
This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, and Jayashree Arunachalam are joined by policy researcher Yamini Aiyar and senior journalist Rasheed Kidwai.
On the challenges facing think tanks in India, Yamini says working in policy has “moved from jholawala inputs to suit-boot inputs” over the years, referring to the increased corporatisation.
The panel then discusses the Congress manifesto, and the party’s relevance in the upcoming elections. Abhinandan asks, “Is the Congress inevitable?” Rasheed says the grand old party is “not a dead body. It is very much alive and kicking.”
The conversation then moves on to the controversy around Ramayana fame actor Arun Govil campaigning in Meerut with a photograph of the deity Ram. On the use of religion for votes, Rasheed says it’s “not an issue” for voters in India.
This and a whole lot more. Tune in!

An interesting piece by Tavleen Singh, The Indian Express 21.04.2024 :- Many things have changed in India since Narendra Modi first became prime minister. But one change that has gone almost unnoticed is that a process of real decolonisation has transpired. And because of this the old, colonised ruling class has been swept away. This is a very good thing. It should have happened long, long ago. As someone who belonged to that ruling class, I consider myself well qualified to explain why this process of decolonisation was overdue and how we failed India as its ruling class. The truth is we were an effete, hopeless bunch. We spoke no Indian language well, but this did not matter to us. We were proud of speaking English well. In our drawing rooms we sneered at those who dared enter without speaking good English. And at those whose table manners were not embellished with western refinement. In short, those who fumbled with forks and knives and preferred eating with their hands and without cutlery. When we travelled to foreign lands, we made a good pretense of being Indian, but we never cared to understand what it meant to be Indian. We pretended to know everything about India’s ancient culture and civilisation, but we knew almost nothing. In the schools and colleges we attended, we learned more about western civilisation, history, and literature than about our own, so it was not totally our fault. When it came to politics and elections, we stuck loyally by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and its various heirs because they were people like us. We did not care that Parliament had been turned into a private members club. It was our club. Nor did we care that the Congress Party under Sonia Gandhi’s stewardship had also become a private club. It was our club. In our drawing rooms we talked endlessly of democracy and secularism and saw ourselves as ordained to protect these ideas. Then along came Narendra Modi and the earth shifted beneath our feet. He may not have been personally responsible for everything that changed but he was a vital part of the political change that happened, and this somehow became an essential element of the bigger changes that were happening. Suddenly, almost overnight, after Modi first became prime minister, we became not just powerless but irrelevant. A new breed of Indians who spoke Hindi well and English not at all started replacing us in the high offices of government, as political analysts, and anchors in TV studios, in journalism, in Bollywood movies and TV series. They were not impressed with our skills in English, and we were so impressed by how Indian they were that we tried to emulate them just to belong. Some of us have succeeded, most of us have not. Those who have not but wish to continue being relevant cling these days to Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi and hope that somehow, they will be able to defeat Modi. Some act as advisors to the current heirs of the Dynasty and fill their heads with grandiose ideas like saving the Constitution and saving democracy. But the truth is that Rahul Gandhi’s main message remains the same as it was in the last general election. This is that Modi is corrupt and that he works only for a handful of rich Indians. He steals your money, he shrieks at his political rallies, and he gives it to his rich friends. How exactly does this work? As leader of the Congress Party, he is seen, especially by foreign correspondents, as the only man who can defeat Modi. It is bad luck for him that he seems so incapable of convincing Indian voters of this, despite trying hard to prove that he is one of them. He has worked with farmers in rice fields, transported coal on bicycles with miners, listened to the woes of vegetable sellers and spent long hours with mechanics in dingy shops to show how much he cares about the ‘common man.’ So why is the common man not impressed? Could it be because these gestures come across somehow as noblesse oblige and not genuine acts of sympathy? What is it about ‘autocratic’, ‘dictatorial’ Modi that attracts ordinary Indian voters more? The answer that I got to this question on my recent travels in rural India is that people have seen changes in their lives, and they believe that these changes have happened because of Modi. These are not remarkable changes. They are simple things like roads, drinking water, electricity, and Internet services but because they were not there before, they seem remarkable. Many of these things should have happened long ago. But because we were so colonised a ruling class, we did not notice that ordinary Indians were forced to endure the worst public services. In our drawing rooms and in our entitlement, we did not care about such things because in our privileged cocoon it would have been unthinkable to go to a government hospital or a government school. Modi’s advent burst the bubble in which we lived, and the truth is that most of us have no idea why this happened. We continue to hope that he will be defeated this time and hope that the message that democracy is in danger will resonate with voters. When the results come, we are likely to be disappointed again. I met nobody in rural India who saw Modi as corrupt and autocratic. -----++---+--++--++-----

Modi himself has established himself as the ruling class of India. And if someone says they traveled abroad but never knew what it felt to be an Indian, but after Modi's arrival they did, then that's a false semse of ultra nationalism. We knew what it means to be an Indian long before Modi. Modi doesn't define India. And as far as the rural India goes, trust me, go there and ask yourself. Modi is getting his image tainted.

Hinduism is not one religion but a complex mixture of different religions and cultures prevalent in the Indian subcontinent since ancient times. Even within Hinduism there are Arya Samajis who do not worship idols like muslims, there are many communities, particularly in South India which bury their dead again like muslims, there are Himachalis who worship different gods depending on their village of origin, there are many communites who even eat Beef. In fact you can practically worship or believe anything and still be a Hindu. If you define religion in terms of codified Abrahamic religions, there would be millions different religions within Hinduism. These different religions as a whole came together to call themselves Hindus, and hence RSS is not wrong when it equates being a Hindu to being Indian as Hindusim like India is more of a geographical and a cultural concept than a religious concept. This also makes Hinduism as a culture very very secular. In this context, Muslims at 15% are in fact a particularly large simple religious majority within India and not a minority. Muslims of India are as much Hindus as Arya Samajis, Sanatanis etc. It is the pre-independence era acts which gave them a distinct status ( Partition, Muslim personal law etc ), which have lead them to be segregated, sequestered and marginalised in India. Muslims should welcome laws like UCC which will in long term help them to be integrated into the Indian ( Hindu ) mainstream. A beautiful example is Sikhism which is well integrated with Rest of India while also maintaining their distinct cultures and identity.

UCC is not possible in India especially if hindu BJP are doing it. Because they see things only from a Hindu perspective and his to put the muslim in his place. There is UCC in my state Goa, it doesn't affect religious belief or individual freedom unlike the uttarakhand UCC that is trying to dictate individual freedom and choices. Only liberal minds can come up with a UCC that is acceptable to all. Not conservative bigots who believe in traditionalism. Today's hindus are not like the Hindus if old, who assimilated all within it. If some group of people are telling you what you should eat, when you should eat it, what you should wear, whom you should love. Believe me bro that mindset can never come up with something that is best for everyone. Uttarakhand ucc is as good as a talibani dictat.

  • @shitizb

@@marshadesouza7977 it is the bureaucracy which drafts laws, not BJP or congress. Apart from an unnecessary provisions covering live-in relationships, U-UCC is pretty equitable. Goa UCC on other hand does treat Catholic marriages separately. Also the clause which allows polygamy in case the woman does not conceive a male child by 30 is horrible! Also Hinduism even today, because it is not a codified religion, can assimilate anybody who is willing to be assimilated.

I am not really sure if the use of the word "inevitability" here is appropriate. Inevitability=the quality of being certain to happen. Are you guys rather trying to ask the question "if Congress indispensable in Indian politics?" Also, the video, the question was "Is Congress inevitable? But; The word "inevitable" generally refers to something that is certain to happen and cannot be prevented or avoided, often used in contexts involving events or outcomes. If the intention is to inquire about the necessity or indispensability of the party, a more fitting question could be, "Is Congress (a political party) essential?" or "Is Congress (a political party) necessary?". Although you provide quality content, it is not always pleasing to the ears, similar to much of the English language content in India. Abhinandan's diction is poor, (others are not better either) as he tends to mumble or swallow his words. If you could seek professional help to enhance your content's delivery-improving grammar, articulation, phonetics, and structuring your questions more clearly-your work could appeal to a broader audience. However, please continue with the great work you are currently doing.

1:27:51 dont agree with you that it is a dumb question. Apart from India which secular country has religious personal laws? People especially in North India have seen various political parties appeasing to Muslims and coming in power(famous MY formula of UP, Bihar) and even torch bearers of secularism bringing new laws to appease Muslims(Shah Bano), which has convinced people that secularism is just another jumla. No one practiced it and no one will practice it.

Choose the correct answer: Which party among the 2 below doesn't use religious appeasement, caste polistics, freebies, joins hand with rivals to win elections, have currupt leaders, and have nepotism roots? Option 1: BJP Option 2: Congress Option 3: Both of them do all these things, its just a matter of scale, specifics, and extent.

Press that blankly "sides with" a government in power is ipso facto not a free press. Press can agree with the government on certain issues, but it is still their job to hold them accountable for failures. Your problem is that you see everything through a partisan lens. Not everything is about party vs. opposition. Sometimes it's government vs. people.

In a democracy, people who do not agree with the policies of the existing government may join the opposition party which is Congress today. Hence, the correct way to judge a political party is to assess it's current crop of leaders / members. I mean we cannot have a new political party every 10 years. The party remains the same, people in it change. In other words, if you sit in a class 10 board exam, you will be judged by what you wrote rather than what your father or grandfather wrote in their times. The same BJP or Janta party had people who fought against the authoritarian regime of Congress. The table has turned today. The party remains the same, people change. Understood?

The sad truth is that no major political party except the BJP would survive a comprehensive and honest war on corruption. Even BJP would come out with major dents, particularly at state level. Also, this war on corruption has already started and is inevitable, wether state led or people/court led. When the Congress and the left is crying out that democracy is in danger, they are actually gasping for survival. The country is staring at a huge political gap when this war ends. AAP was born with the promise to fill this gap, but greed and impatience made it susceptible to the same war which led to its creation in the first place. At the moment Prashant Kishore's movement seems to be the only alternative to fill this gap. Hopefully more will come up soon.
