But I am grateful how my music has allowed me to seep into the colors of holi through this beautiful Dhamar. I don't think I have been able to do justice to it, but I know its in my heart and I will keep trying. A huge thanks due to #RomanDas for this impeccable and incredible Dhamar accompaniment on the pakhawaj. Maybe you can notice how beautifully the words have been chiseled into the Dhamar to compliment the sounds of the taal on pakhawaj.
I found the composition Immersive and powerful. And a strange combination for a dhamaar to be sung in the solemn and serious raag shree which is why I was drawn to it in the first place.
Pandit Omkarnath Thakur writes in his Sangeetanjali - “of the 6 primary ragas, five are said to have emanated from the five mouths of Shiva, while the sixth is said to have emanated from Shri-Mukha and therefore it was named Shree. He adds that the prescribed time of the Rāga around sunset, is the time when nature and humans are at peace but the disembodied spirits - of whom Shiva is the Lord - are active.
For me this dhamār in Shree belongs to a moment during the heightened exuberance, and madness of holi, as one steps back from the noise into the eternal silence of another world. The solemn, eerie grace of Shree and the descriptions of holi in the dhamār point towards a unique internalized experience of heightened senses and receptivity.
