DEWALT DC390B 18V VS DEWALT DCS391B 20V CIRCULAR SAW - WHY I UPGRADED TO THE 20V

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I am discussing why I chose to upgrade to the 20v dewalt circular saw from the 18v. I paid $89.99 on amazon.ca The old saw was flawless but the batteries were not up to my needs. I look forward to putting the 20v circular saw thru its paces this summer. Cheers

    Those 20volt anything pretty much is a whiz-banger, in other words they really get with it. At my age as far as tools around the house they are all battery in fact I bought a 40v Ryobi chain saw and that thing is awesome. Not to heavy and has power to burn. The battery doesn’t trickle down it puts out full power until the end plus it recharges in a couple of hours. This is off your subject of skill saws but just wanted to share my experience with a 40v machine. Good vid Steve, good luck and I hope you have good luck.

    That 18 volt would’ve been okay if you had the 18 volt lithium battery. Unfortunately they don’t make them anymore. But I’ve got a bunch of them still. I am interested to see if the 20v saw is any better than my 18v using 18v lithium batteries.

    The only real issue is that the 20 volt tool actually runs at 18 volt. The 20 volts is the initial maximum voltage right when it is removed from the charger. The instant you put a load on them they return to the nominal voltage of 18 volts.

  • @SteveRobReviews

    @SteveRobReviews

    The battery build is completely different to i believe- the 18v runs out real fast but the 20v goes on like the ever ready bunny. LOL

  • @Blazer02LS

    @Blazer02LS

    The chemistry is different but the voltages are the same. 5 cells at 3.6 volts nominal voltage per cell = 18V The 20 volt max units are labeled MAX because of that. Take one of the old nicad batteries and fully charge it then use a meter and measure the voltage. You will find they are around 20 volts as well. but they rated the 18 volt units at the nominal voltage. The only real differences are the battery shapes and the charging controls for them. This was done because DeWalt came out with the Li-ion packs and originally badged them at 18 volts. BUT they discovered that people were buying the new packs thinking that they would fit the older tools, which they wont. So they got calls about how the batteries don't fit. So they relaunched the line as the 20 volt MAX line but only in North America. In the rest of the world they are sold as 18 volt XR lithium tools because those countries have stricter marketing laws that require them to be sold at the operating voltage. They are not the only ones doing this though, All of the "20 volt" tools sold are really 18 volt nominal power. Want even more fun go look at the Milwaukee M12 tools, they are not 12 volt tools, they are really 10.8 volts. 3 X 3.6 volt cells in a triangle = 10.8 And like the "20 volt" tools will show as 12 volts when pulled off the charger, but drop to 10.8 when they actually have a load on them. Might make for an interesting video but it's been covered by multiple people online.

    I bought the adapter, and I'm glad to have it. Your old 18V tools are begging for lithium-ion power! If a "20V" tool doesn't have a brushless motor, it's likely the same tool as the "18V" original, just adapted for the new pack. The saws in this video are the classic example of that. I defy anyone to run the 18V saw and adapter beside the "20V", using the same battery pack, and produce a vastly different result.

    The most Important thing about the Battery is the AMP Hour rating ,,, Can't beat the Cordless Tech these days ,,, The only problem is the manufacturers discontinue and change Battery design then You can't get a Battery for Your Old Tool and then You need to Buy their New Tool and Battery ,,, Smart like a Fox they are...!!!!!

  • @SteveRobReviews

    @SteveRobReviews

    Yes and it was a scam of sorts discontinuing the batteries but what im noticing is their all going to battery designs that can be used on the same tool but different voltages. Sticking with one brand is the best choice but most batteries today in the higher voltages cost more than this saw. LOL

    There are no extra volts, it's just a marketing trick. "20V" is really 18 volts, which is why the DCA1820 adapter works. In Europe, -Stanley/Black and Decker- DeWalt legally cannot call them "20 volt" for that reason. The difference is between Ni-Cd and Li-ion.

    I think it was you Gator who said the lithium batteries will degrade with time. Well I checked it out (not that I doubt your wisdom) and sure enough ,some degrade by 20 percent even if they aren't used. So if you are going to buy a battery check the date of manufacture. The real solution would be to rig up a 120 volt charging system to charge the battery when you are using it.
