I had a 10" Dewalt compound miter saw for around 12 years (light duty). It still works great kzread.infoUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe but I wanted something bigger. My only complaint about the 10" was the location of the motor, and this version fixes that issue. The XPS system works well. My only request for future versions is a dust collection port (or adapter) that fits large shop vac hoses (or standard PVC pipe fittings) a little better. But that's not a complaint, just a request.

I do primarily crown (cabinet and standard wall), trim, built ins. I'm buying this saw probably tomorrow. I've been using the Hercules from Harbor Freight as an experiment for the last two months. It actually is a good saw, that cuts very accurately. I'm returning it because (a) the dust collection is horrible, and I do most of my cutting indoors attached to a vac, (b) it just feels "tight", wereas the DeWalt I used for 15 years was smooth from day one.

This is only the second video of yours i have seen, & it too was great! i'd just pointed out to my husband, how another you tube channel was re-doing a miter station, but NOT upgrading his DeWalt to a sliding model. I knew Makita & Bosch made some awesome one's & so i assumed DeWalt made a competing version. Your video popped up next so i could say "see, look, DeWalt needed to hook him up with the 779". So thanks,👍, i'll be checking out your other videos!-Lisa

I actually have both the DW779 and an antique DeWalt MBF radial arm saw. I love the ras because it's incredibly precise. There are micro adjust screws and you can get perfect, repeatable cuts. The key is to get a negative hook blade and they're very safe. I love the portability of the DW779. You can also dial it in to being pretty precise. The deflection in the arm and large blade make it not quite as precise, but we're splitting microscopic hairs. Both saws are outstanding

There is one feature you missed out in the video. There is 2 metal "handles" or what they are called on the back of the machine very close to the big knob made for bevel cut. Anyway, move this handle and you can go past 45 degres on bevel cut. Also, if you remove the upper part of the fence and put some sacrifice material on the table the saw can cross cut up to something like 16 inches! Years ago there was a series of projects from the American Plywood Assoc. and I used our radial arm saw for all the cuts in a gun cabinet project made from several sheets of 3/4 plywood. That saw did a marvelous ob of sutting smooth and square. The problem with radial arm saws is their lack of portability. Most trades people now will use their portable table saw and a miter saw due the portability of these pieces of equimpment. If I had the space, I would have a radial arm saw simply for all its versatility.

for about $80 shipped I upgraded mine from the 779 to a 780 with the light kit, IMO it's better than the laser since it casts a shadow of the blade giving an exact line of cut. Hi Mark -- Nice review and I ordered this saw which will be coming this week. One question about depth of cut: can you shed some insight as to why Dewalt states this saw has a depth of cut of 6 3/4"? I understand how the blade is able to travel that much and go below the surface of the platform -- but the material one is cutting stops at the platform. Maybe I'm missing something here but does it ever matter how much further down the blade will move? For reference, I was comparing this one to the Rigid R4222 -- same price point but with a lifetime warranty -- and the Rigid cutting thickness is stated only as 4". I mean, no 12" round blade can cut through much more than that - once allowing for the arbor and safety guard. Am I right? As for radial arm saws -- yeah, I had a craftsman I bought in the 80s but I'll admit it was a little scary. Liked using it with a dado blade and it could be using for ripping -- also had a drum sanding attachment that screwed onto the opposite side of the blade. But one of the first times I used the radial arm I shot a board clear across the basement into the cinder block wall. Operator error for sure but thankfully no one got hurt!

  • @MarkThomasBuilder

    @MarkThomasBuilder

Oh man, that radial arm story brings back memories. I started using one when I was 18 without being trained. I had some boards get shot across the room. I was so happy to upgrade to a compound miter saw and never go back.

If you're doing a typical bevel cut, where the saw is tilted to the left, you can return it to the top and it has a positive stop. If you want to make a bevel cut where you tilt it to the right, that yellow button pulls out to release the saw to tilt to the right. Hope that helps.

Great video. These are indeed great saws and I love mine. However, it should be noted that the DWS779 has gone through at least three production versions at the time of this response ... Type 20, 21, and 22 now being the latest. Each production version has obsoleted (ended production of) the prior version. However, you will not find information concerning the production version Type on the product's packaging. The production version Type may only be found on the label affixed to the upper surface of the saw's motor. Suffice it to say that all DWS779 saws are not the same and you have to dig deeper than the model name. When initially produced, the DWS779 and its $200-$250 more expensive sibling, the DSW780, differed only in that the latter featured an LED shadow cut line light (XPS Light). While the DWS779 Type 20, possibly Type 21, and DWS780 may have all of the features shown within this video, the DWS779 Type 22 production version lacks at least following features: - the bevel stop pawls - slide stop lever. I can only surmise that these production changes were introduced to drive down production cost to make it more competitive, profitable, and provide greater differentiation between itself and the DWS780. It should be noted that many had been turning their DWS779 saws into full DWS780 saws by adding an aftermarket LED shadow cut line light for less than half of the cost differential between these two saws. Given this information, should the bevel pawls and slide stop lever be must have features for you, then you will need to purchase the DWS780 rather than the DWS779. Please additionally note that the DWS779 Type 22 saw has no provision to accept the bevel pawls or slide stop lever parts from the DWS780 or DWS779 Type 20/21.

At around 5:50 you describe the depth of cut as 6-3/4". But how can a blade with a 12" diameter cut deeper than its 6" radius? 🤔 I can see that it might be able to cut that deep on a thinner board that's on edge on the fence. But you aren't able to slide that 6-3/4" cut along the entire length of the slider, correct?

  • @MarkThomasBuilder

Here's an explanation found on the Home Depot website... Tall sliding fences support crown molding up to 7-1/2 in. nested and base molding up to 6-3/4 in. vertically against the fence while easily sliding out of the way for bevel cuts.

Almost all of them complained about not being able to set it up to cut straight. If they adjusted the fence to cut straight on the left side of the blade the right was out. Some said that it was off by 1/2 a degree. That's a bunch if you are for example a furniture maker. Anyway, that is something to maybe post as an update for your review. Use an accurate machine square with truly square boards, not 2x4's. Your review would be ok if you were using it for rough framing but for dead on accuracy you need to show it. Just a suggestion.

@@MikeM-ld1rw Hey Mike, that's an awesome deal for such a powerful tool! I don't have the stand for mine yet. Does it fold up decently for storage?

@@MarkThomasBuilder Hi Mark, I am definitely pleased with the stand. It is well built and pretty light weight. I does collapse nicely. I bought this saw to replace my 10 year old Bosch 5312 with the folding gravity rise stand. I do like the ease of the bosch stand and the ability to roll the saw around but I think the DeWalt stand is a little more stable when using the saw. Thanks for the review! I still like watching the reviews even after I have purchased the tool, LOL. Merry Christmas!

They often have a "Special Buy" price that is around for a long time. They also have other special deals around Christmas, Memorial Day and Independence Day.

Maybe somewhere. As of June 2020 these are no longer available in HD or Lowes in Wash DC area for pickup. Online price at lowes online is $549 and HD offers it at $349 but with a delivery charge.

Yeah I know that ring sound. I put a Diablo blade on and no more ring. I recently made a video showing the Dewalt LED Shadow Line Light Kit. It's an awesome upgrade and takes about 20 minutes to do.

@@MarkThomasBuilder I heard it voids the warranty, but my low end dewalt reciprocating saw from HD is going in 15 with no problems. I'm not overly concerned with the warranty. I've never had a problem with cut lines, but that's because I'm good at it. I'm definitely interested in speeding up the process.

Don’t like the ringing in the blade aft cut. Don’t like the location of dust back

Couple things to mention. If you switch out to a Diablo blade, you wont get that ringing. I agree with the dust port location. It makes it hard to put this up against a wall. Other brands have them closer to the blade.

I ordered one along with the upgrade kit to add the light. I always fought my Craftsman saw thinking I was terrible doing angles until i realized the fence wasn't aligned on both sides. I'm hoping this one is true.

Mine was true right out of the box. I recommend checking it before using it. I want to add that light. Let me know how easy it is to install and how it works. 👍

I just had to get it out of the box. I watched a couple videos and saw that they are suppose to come with a 60T blade instead of a 32T. I called Dewalt to see if they will send one. I'm waiting for their reply.

I just looked at the Home Depot website and it didn't say how many teeth the blade has. I just quickly glanced though.

A radial arm saw will allow log rip cuts on full sheets of plywood.

  • @MarkThomasBuilder

That would be handy if you're wanting some nice, straight cuts. I don't think the radial arm saw I owned would cut 4' wide. I didn't keep it long enough to find out.

It has a depth stop setting that allows repeatable cuts that are like a dado cut. It doesn't take a dado blade though.

Not trying to be "that guy" or a "well actually" person but strings on hoodies pose a serious safety risk. Just a friendly reminder to wear clothing without such strings or remove the strings before using any tool that can pull on the strings and cause serious injury.

i think you are right, particularly if builder NEEDS 12". But for me, since my health has declined, the width of boards i can cut with my sliding 10" lets me build many items without the need of a table saw. So in away- saves me space. But i see a lot of builders on you tube have to move heaven and hell to make room for radial arm.
