Destiny vs. Nathan Robinson on Palestine

Ben has Nathan on to discuss his wide-ranging debate with Destiny on the war in Palestine, in which the streamer stated that even if Israel nuked Palestine, it wouldn't necessarily be a genocide.

Couple of years ago Destiny admitted that he would take certain positions on topics in debate just for the sport of it Even though there isn’t anything wrong with that in general, it can be harmful if he’s successfully arguing in favor of something that’s dangerous just for the sport of it I couldn’t take his debates seriously after learning that I’m not sure if he’s doing that with Gaza but the fact that I’m wondering about his seriousness illustrates my point

“Genocide is just a word. It depends how you define it.” Precisely right…and Destiny is applying the actual legal definition for the crime of genocide and concluding that the crime requires a higher standard of proof than the current evidence supports. It’s bad faith to criticise his take while acknowledging that you are using a watered down definition but want to keep the word for its morale weight and therefore his argument does not make sense.

There are parallel errors here. Leftists (though less so the ones in this video) have trouble criticizing the no good, very bad things that Israel is doing in Gaza without invoking the word "genocide". Destiny will do backflips to defend the no good, very bad things as long as they aren't genocide.

If Israel tries to reduce the 2.3M Gazans to 1.3M, through bombing, because the latter number of Gazans would be better for Israeli national security than the former, and not because of mere bloodthirst, then it is not genocide. That's Mr. Pappardelle's position... I wonder what he would say about the fact that Hitler was trying to achieve a similar goal himself.

If you keep running into problems describing something because the terms have Holocaust connotations, you have done a pretty good job of establishing that whatever it is, it ain't GOOD. Declare it a "Holocausty" and move on to what you DO about Holocausties.

Also yes, I am quite sure Destiny throws out bait to get a rise out of people on certain topics so that he can then dismiss them easily as whatever strawman best applies (to call them a tankie or an unrealistic utopian etc), and sure it probably does catch out some people with questionable views but it also comes across like whataboutism, red herring, strawmanning, character assassination etc. And really it is for that bloodsport bs so he can make them angry, laugh at them, his audience can pat him on the back and get some semi-viral clip out of it, all the while he avoids having to actually have to answer a difficult question or hypothetical that might be at the core of it.

Destiny would probably score very well on an Israel Palestine modern history test/quiz. That doesn't seem to translate to him having a good position on this. He supposedly wants to combat the inflammatory and irresponsible language on the left, which is understandable in some situations, but the hyper focus on technical details when arguing against someone like Nathan here makes it feel like he's just doing this for himself

This is the smart move, regardless of whether one thinks what Israel is doing is genocide. Criticizing the no good, very bad things Israel is doing in Gaza without invoking "genocide" takes away the ability to rebut that criticism with semantic arguments that are irrelevant to those core criticisms.

Because he’s already amassed a large fan base and it’s important to pick him a part when he’s wrong. I genuinely agreed with a lot of destiny’s takes in the past but lost a lot of respect for him with his take on this conflict. I think Nathan and Marc Lamont Hill have done the best job in taking apart destiny’s arguments. Destiny thrives when people get emotional. When you stay calm and answer his arguments one by one without letting him change the direction of the conversation every time his argument seems weak it exposes him…

My impression of this network is wannabe pundits who care so much about this conflict that they talk about it all the time, but apparently don't care enough to actually go there themselves to help make an actual difference or even do your own reporting. Keep arguing with internet streamers, I'm sure that makes you a hero to the people in Gaza.
