Baldur's Gate Descent into Avernus is an adventure based in the first layer of hell, Avernus! Well at least it eventually is. Baldur's Gate is where the adventure starts. And the party better want to save a city Elturel from being stuck in hell, otherwise this will be a short adventure!

Exactly! The first fight (aka first TPK) has beaten into our new-to-5e, 1st level baby brain that "only NPCs can save your sorry ass". Obviously, we started using henchmen. Sadly, the DM didn't let us to do so for very long ‒ our first group of henchmen were cool simpletons, but later nobody wanted to come with us. One group even stole our money. I guess DM didn't want to have hour-long combat rounds but didn't want to be frank about it. It's good not being alone in our suffering in Tier1.

When my party ran DIA it became a running gag that we were just doing the quest for the Biggoron Sword in Ocarina of Time. The whole Avernus part of the module is just this long sequence of fetch quests until it finally culminates in you getting the best sword in the game.

Thats the thing with this module. Its been sold as Mad MAx in Hell. But its actually Fed Ex/Errand Boy in Hell. The module sends you on a bunch of "quests" and have you "do" a millions of stuff, but none are really related to what you're supposed to do and why you're here... Even our group got fed up and the DM decided to expedite things a bit cause it was really boring.

Oh, you forgot the near TPK fight in the tavern in the beginning of the adventure, and also the part where if the party doesn't accept Zodge's task to clear out the death cult that he sends bigger and bigger hit squads to TPK the party, and can send an infinite amount, which.... wait, why isn't he sending THOSE teams into hell instead of level 3-4 adventurers???? Excellent review/parody review lol, there are so many issues with this (and other) WotC advnetures. When I ran my group through this they literally yawned their way out at the hill of impaled people/meeting lulu.

  • 7 ай бұрын

I agree with what you are saying about the first combat as well, but I want to focus on Zodge. The party is risking life and limb for the goals of a corrupt cop because otherwise he just kills them off. They are expendable. If they behave well, they might as well die trying to clean out some shithole otherwise needing the understaffed Fist's attention. Such low treatment and abuse of player characters is a refreshingly brave move from WotC.

As someone currently in a DiA campaign, it’s a fantastic module… *if* you have a DM who’s willing to rewrite a good chunk of it. There are a lot of fun people and places and things to do in the book, but the way it ties those things together is often very clunky and narratively unsatisfying.

I’m running this right now I’m Ive rewritten some bits to make it less tedious and improve some plots imo First I rewrote some lore where the legend of zariel’s charge is known but not the outcome of z Ariel herself. Not even her name is known just that an angel helped the hellriders. I also had the shield become unidentifiable except for a few select NPCs in the game. Giving way for the devil inside to manipulate the party and open the plot point more. Lastly rather than make it a long escort mission I made it a sandbox where the party must travel and try to figure out how to save the city or just escape hell. All while uncovering slowly zariel’s story.

I'm still never getting over how they Butchered Jander Sunstar, the Icon, the Legend of old Ravenloft, and not even give us a true way to 'save' him from the stupid metal tree.

You are supposed to point and say ”I know that guy!", then I guess move on.

I was so excited for this book, I thought it was going to be so awesome. What a letdown. Baldur's Gate stuff gets shoehorned in to promote a PC game that was 3, maybe 4 years away from release? And that's like a third of the book? And Avernus wasn't even that great either. Great rundown nonetheless!

I really wish they had just started in Hell or had the opening be like 3 pages max. Wanted WAY more cool demon stuff and WAY less mundane cult stuff.

My group went to the crypt of hellriders early and managed to guess the password on like their 5th try. I let them enter 😁 I actually like this campaign, but you have to work a bit as the dm. But that's fine. If I just wanted to read a book I'd just read a book.

This one really is the worst adventure written for 5e, it’s so bad. I’m super glad Icewind Dale is literally the best written.

Giving a quick explanation of this makes me realize how bad WotC is at writing. The lore is cool. The world is cool. But they have a terrible way of connecting shit. Morons. They will lose it all.
