Depression will not stop me (suburban homesteading with rabbits, chickens, & dogs)

There's a lot to unpack in this video.
First off, meet Brûlée, my new Creme d'Argent buck! He has been bred to Camille and we're hoping for some new babies on our suburban farm next month :) I also wanted to walk around to show you all the current litters and some updates we have made.
Later I share why sometimes I can disappear. Though I don't mean for it to, my desire for creativity can sometimes leave me, resulting in depression that can sometimes be long-term. I also share with you our current state in life, paying off student debt and trying to inch ourselves closer to our dreams.
And finally, I show some updates to the chicken coop and share some news about our flock of 6 chickens.

Having goals is extremely important! I understand student loans been there done that 4 times. Became permanently disabled in 2020 with no assistance due to Covid. Was a terrible time. I love your channel. Having critters does not have to be ugly. My building hutches is just not able. Nothing could live in something I built! I live in rural area zoned for farm animals. I have Silver Fox Rabbits and will continue. I also have pullets that eat a lot of ticks. I did raise dairy goats for 25 years but can no longer do that. I would love to find some Beveren rabbits close by but have not been successful. Your videos are very calming. Thank you and keep them coming!

I go through the same thing in spurts but 2020 has been an especially rough year, and not just because of the pandemic. I lost my heart dog of 12 years, my old man Chihuahua, to a terrible and unexpected tragedy earlier this summer. We've lost family members and gone through financial issues due to the pandemic. We were in a terrible 3-car collision right after Father's day and my car was totaled. So much has happened, and it has really just drained my energy and motivation. But there's so much I want to do, especially for our silver fox rabbits. They're just coming into breeding age and are just in basic cages right now, but we're wanting to build something more professional and substantial for them. The excitement of how that will look and function once it's completed is helping to bring some of my motivation back. Doing all of this as an introvert with depression can be extremely overwhelming and difficult at times. It's certainly been really rough this year. But I try to keep myself focused by planning future projects and daydreaming about the ways we'll be able to expand once we move to a larger property with more usable acreage and the ability to have chickens and goats and pigs as well as our rabbits and quail. Your videos are always inspiring! There aren't too many of us raising silver foxes that show and talk about them regularly on KZread. Most homesteaders that I started following to learn more about silver foxes have since gotten out of the breed in favor of more heat tolerant breeds, or out of rabbits altogether. So it's nice that I found you so that there's somewhere I can still get awesome silver fox content. And pretty soon we'll be starting up our channel as well, so the hope is that we can get even more folks interested in the breed! Thank you for the constant inspiration. I love seeing the relationships you have with your rabbits and I look forward to joining you in the realm of KZread in the next month or so! Stay positive and strong. Love your content and your authenticity. ❤️

Wow, your comment literally made my day ❤️ I’m so sorry that this year has been so rough on you. One thing I can definitely relate to is the loss of your heart dog. That is something I went through in February. My dog Stone, of nearly 16 years (I got him when I was 12!) had to leave us. The pain is still so hard. And I can’t imagine how hard multiple losses would be. I’m so glad you are okay, and I’m glad you’re here. I’m so excited for you on your Silver Fox journey! I can’t imagine I’ll get out of the breed too soon, I’m pretty hooked! 😊 I would love to see your brand new hutch when it’s built! (Or... the process of building it? 😉) we are on a bit of a time crunch to get our new hutch up and running. Soon!! Thanks again for your comment. Stay strong ❤️

I really enjoyed this video and can relate. After some hardships with my health ended my nursing career, then over past 4 years dealt with family issues that helped to create marital problems which me and my husband have gotten back on track and continue to work on (been together for 30 years and married for 26❤) then the unexpected loss of my father in law followed by unexpected loss of my father 8 months later followed by loss of my mother from cancer 7 months after my dad I deal with severe depression and anxiety. We also almost lost our adult disabled daughter in June after a choking incident caused her to go into respiratory failure with doctors telling us minimal chance of recover due to her underlying medical conditions but after being on a ventilator for 10 days, she showed them and got well enough to be discharged 16 days after she was admitted and just a week ago I lost my best friend my baby boy my companion our dog Kane by a tragic accident. Kane barely ever left my side, he slept with me even if it was all day due depression or other health problems, he followed me into bathroom to sit on rug and wait for me, he followed me in my garden and stayed by my side even when I would work in the pouring rain, he would walk around edge of pool when I would get in trying to get closer to me without getting in the water, that was always entertaining, he lived up to the title of lap dog, he always wanted to be beside me or anyone else when I wasn't available, I only had him 5 years before I lost him but was 5 years of him being by my side at all times, especially the hard times, he was the one constant. All of these things affect my depression and anxiety so I started to garden and started raising chickens that forced me to get out every day and do something. I have just recently found your channel and I'm a fan already. You exude confidence through your videos and in turn makes me feel confident in being able to try some of your projects. I know this comment is long but just wanted to know even through a camera you help me out when I watch your videos 😊

Thank you so much for sharing ❤️ I am so sorry for your losses, and I know that words can’t adequately provide as much comfort as we’d like them to. I love hearing about Kane and working on your marriage. These are all such beautiful things. Kane sounds like one of those dogs you just never forget (I totally understand. I just lost my dog Stone this year, and he took part of my heart with him). I love hearing about your experience gardening and your chickens. These things bring me such great joy, and I hope they can bring other people as much joy as well, even though this year has been full of learning curves with our garden I know that it can take time to learn how to do all this stuff! Don’t give up. I’m glad you’re here! ❤️

For the most part, I have managed through it, but I sure made some bad decisions because of it throughout my lifetime! Try to avoid making major decisions during a period of depression! We had a rooster in town, we managed him by putting him in a box during the night and didnt let him out till later in the morning when we got up. He didnt seem to mind and it worked for us. He didnt crow as he didnt see the sun coming up, in the box. I would put the box and him with his ladies every night before we went to bed. He wasnt a big rooster just a small one. Thanks for sharing, I can relate.

I have thought about the box thing! It’s not a bad idea, but he’s not super tame and I’m not sure I want to catch him every night 😂 we still have him, but we may be rehoming him after he helps produce more babies here for us, if the collar doesn’t quiet him down. He’s been quieter since it’s winter right now. Time will tell!

It’s sooooo hard to get in front of a camera and expose yourself to the harsh judgment of the world! You have a beautiful heart and it shines in all your videos. Beat yourself up less, love. You don’t have to be perfect. I think a lot of us struggle with mental health issues, especially sensitive and caretaker type women. And hormones don’t help. Sometimes I try to “just do it” and think less to get myself moving on those days. And the VERY best cure to those long days of no motivation is to focus on yourself for a few days. I find that exercising, eating really healthy, doing some skin care, and giving myself some love tends to really help in those horrible slumps. And also, do something immediately gratifying and thoughtless that you’re avoiding. Like doing the dishes. Scrubbing the kitchen. The other day I waxed and buffed my wooden farm table. Even better if the job makes you sweat a little. We do so many long projects and so many things that never end that sometimes you need that happy boost from completing a job! Raking leaves or waxing a table or washing the car is mindless. You don’t need to think. Just engage your body. Feel your muscles. Focus on the work itself. When you finish you’ll find you feel really great. Not that it lasts forever or fixes the slump. But it can really make a bad day great. And that’s something. Just my tips. Love your channel!

Hi Tiffany! I'm Crystal, Im up here in Michigan. Im a new sub to your channel, and Im so very glad that I found you! I recently got into meat rabbits(NZs), and it went from a "backyard meat production" to a total love for rabbits & interested in bettering the breed, breeding program, and show now too LOL. Silver foxes are going to be coming to our rabbitry here this week, and Im super excited! But finding more detailed info about them seems to be really difficult, so Im glad to see you covering them here. Also, finding it hard to find info on shows. I'd love to get more info, if you're able to do those types of videos. breeding genetics, what to look for, breed for, etc. So, pretty much anything I can do with the rabbits, Im looking to expand on. On the more serious note of your opening up to your subscribers, its' an awesome video. Making yourself vulnerable can be really hard for a lot of folks but you did it very gracefully! Myself, I struggled with depression and anxiety (over anything and everything) for years. Since I was a teen. Im currently struggling with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) on top of everything else going on in our world right now. I also tend to hyper focus on passionate topics (which has become rabbits, as of late lol) and I always have to find ways to be bettering our new homestead-same as you-constantly have to be building or doing something to stay busy and feeling "Productive". I'd be conservative to call myself a "hot mess" lol. I think allowing yourself to let your subs see you in this light, allows them to connect with you and your journey all the better. Its not something that's often talked about, not nearly enough. Yet so many people struggle with it. I think a lot of youtubers have a "production quality" feel. Which is great for educational purposes but, I don't hang on the edge of my seat, waiting for them to release videos. You're real, and you're showing people that. It's an awesome thing. I think a LOT of people (including myself) can relate to what you're going through. Feeling like you're not alone, is one of the best things that people like us can feel, and letting others know they're not alone is one of the greatest things WE can do for them. Hang in there! Looking forward to more content. We just bred three of our NZs and currently rushing a hutch build in our garage lol.....so I want to say THANK YOU for those videos! Im getting some great info off those. Very helpful!

Hi Crystal! Rabbits are addicting little creatures aren't they? :) Depending on where you are in Michigan, you should definitely join us at a show in the future! And yes, I find that so many youtubers only show their audience the highlights, and that's not what I wanted to do on my channel. SAD is real too, and so hard to go through, especially right now when we are drowning in snow and can't see any glimpse of spring yet. I'm hoping to do more videos like this is the future, along with more vlogs and educational stuff. There's more animals coming to our home this year. They give me a purpose, and that's a beautiful thing :)

@@TealStoneHomestead They really are! It's spiraled out of control already, haha! I would love to meet up with you at a show! I'm hoping to start getting into them this year. Still new to the process tho, and trying to figure out how to navigate that scene. Somewhat confusing for me :( I still have to come up with a homestead name tho before I can register! LOL. Probably the hardest part really. Im strugglin'. We're in West Michigan, but I would love to travel out of state (nearby, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio) if they're not terribly far. Not sure which ones you usually frequent? Though, I warn you....I'd pick your brain relentlessly. Im a perfectionist and hyper-focused right now. Overwhelming combo lol. I completely agree on the weather. I feel nearly claustrophobic when we're dumped on like this. I can withstand the cold, and snow is pretty only around Christmas. Come the new year, Im ready to get on with Spring already! :) Well, I'm glad you took your channel the route you did. I' love connecting with the youtubers that show character. I've been wanting to get into youtube and do my own channel (We have a newer homestead and still working on a lot of infrastructure type things, slowly adding animals/gardening etc, so Im still new). Seeing channels like yours that are real though and connect with their subscribers, that's what I'd want for mine. My anxiety has been holding me back tho. Maybe someday soon :) Keep up the awesome work!

There is a phrase you pronounced in this video that reveals a possible cause of your issue, which is one of the most common causes of depression: continuous need to be in activity. That has proved to be a weak attitude since it is a clear unbalancing of our intellectual (mental) condition. In fact, we also need periods of mental rest to allow our personality to regain the necessary balance and to be ready to start again in calmness and proper concentration. Ancient Romans had named these periods of total and true relaxation "otium" and it was one of the most important trainings they taught to their children and students since the most tender age. It was such a profitable "discovery" that modern psychoanalysis has adopted it as a main point of its work.

Wow thank you for sharing about your struggle with depression and sharing your wonderful projects! Your work looks amazing! I, too, struggle with depression and anxiety(on top of ADHD) so much that it keeps me afraid of accomplishing anything. I have so many ideas but I'm afraid I'm going to mess it all up or find out that I can't finish it. But my husband also struggles with ADHD and he works a full time job. Sometimes projects get put on the back burner because he struggles with finding the motivation to get them done. I am planning a time to ask him to teach me how to use the saws safely so I can help him build things around the homestead. So with that being said, thank you so much for sharing this! This video is helping inspire me to not let my struggles and fears get in the way of accomplishing my dreams! I recently recovered my joy in my gift of art after neglecting it for the past 10+ years and am amazed at what I've been able to accomplish with it. So I know after I learn how to use the saws, I can be of more help around the homestead so we can give all of our animals the best life that we possibly can! =)

It took a while to learn, and I am definitely not a pro, but I love creating things! One of the main things I learned this past year is to not wait for the perfect moment to get started on anything. The perfect moment is never going to come. After I realized this, I started diving into so many things. It definitely makes me feel like I have more of a purpose. If I can do it, anyone can ❤️

As of now I still need Cassia to help me along with my Creme d’Argent program.

One of your videos casually popped up on my dashboard yesterday (because I was looking for ways to help my bloated rabbits) and I was so amazed and happy to see a girl building rabbit hutches, using power tools, taking measurements, mounting things and in general doing all those typical "men" things, (and you are pretty too! Here girls are seen as either "Manly" on the ugly side but able to do "manly things" or "girly" beautiful but unable to do anything if not paint their nails and go shopping. Which I think is really sad and reductive). I so so much related! It's so hard to find videos where girls build things and use tools like you do! I am absolutely like that too! I'm an artist (A tattooer exactly) and I love to build things, to get my hands dirty, to raise my own animals, to care for them and do everything that pops up in my mind! My ultimate goal is o have an homestead, possibly a self sufficient one, but now it seems impossible with this pandemic, since for sure t's not doable here in my county (I'm Italian) and that's why I want to move to Australia, and now I just have to put it all off and wait for who knows how much! So, even the depression is something I can greatly relate too, sadly. it's been a part of my life for so many years I can hardly remember a time when it wasn't, but I've learnt to deal with it, and as you said, be outside, be with my animals, care for them, helps a lot, so much I just know I can't live without them anymore. Gosh, this comment is so random, sorry... I just wanted to tell you that you are GREAT! And it made me so incredibly happy to see your videos and what you do, so just keep doing it! And I hope you will get to achieve your dream

You think your comment is random, but I read every comment I get and this one makes my day ❤️ the state of the world makes me weary lately, but the best thing we can do is press on and on. I have been blessed with nagging determination. I really hope you can achieve your dream of homesteading. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith, and things won’t always go according to plan in the beginning. But the best advice I can give is don’t give up. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you’ll stick around ☺️

@@TealStoneHomestead It's true that right now there is no certainty, and it's scary, but it's also true that hope and positiveness are the best allies in situations like these. And I really hope I'll be able to not give up and manage to achieve my dream! For sure I will stick around now that I found your channel! I wish you only the best!

Depression is rough, I'm so sorry you've been struggling with it. :( I'm glad you are coming out of it, as a fellow creative it is scary when your desire for creativity just disappears. I had no idea there were such things as rooster collars! I wish I had known about that before we got rid of our rooster!

Perennial herbs yes! We question whether or not it would be worth it to add fruit trees since this is not our forever home. Hoping to move to the country in the next couple years 😊

exactly!! its pretty ADORABLE!! I too am taking notes, we have a new property we bought (28 acres, 8 of it pasture, the rest wooded) and it came with a barn, and the barn has a TON of these little old paneled windows in it on the ground sitting against a wall... I KNOW WHAT I AM GOING TO DO WITH THOSE WINDOWS NOW!!! So pretty, so cute, so functional!!

Is it better to cross breed for meat or does it really matter if they’re pure or crossbred for meat production?

I have found that it’s better to find good overall body type and grow rates over anything else. My silver foxes outdid my crosses every single time in terms of meat production.

So was college worth the debt?

I think college was worth it when we went. I met my husband there, made lifelong friends and discovered my passion for photography there. I learned many things about graphic design which ultimately landed me a full-time job that I held for 8.5 years, that I recently quit to pursue my own business. I don’t think college should be as expensive as it is. And with times changing, I’m not sure if the value of going to college is going down. It’s interesting to think about

I raise rabbits for show, meat, and purebred breeding stock. My best advice is to try and find good homes for them when they are old enough!
