The Baby Bunny BOOM! How many were born?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Join me as we follow all three of my does during what I like to call the "Baby Bunny Boom." Spring is a fantastic time to raise rabbits and I'm taking full advantage of it :)
Hollyhock and Bella are purebred Silver Fox rabbits. Both of them were bred to Thorn, my Silver Fox buck. I am trying to raise my Silver Foxes according to ARBA's Standard of Perfection.
Camille is a purebred Creme d'Argent rabbit. We acquired her for diversity to crossbreed with our Silver Foxes for more meat rabbits. Hybrid vigor can make bigger, faster growing babies and that's what we're testing out!
I hope you enjoy following along, there will be more videos very soon! :)

    @@TealStoneHomestead For sure. My daughter and granddaughter watched your videos for hours yesterday after my comment. They made a list of all the ingredients we need to buy today to make up a special mix for rabbit health (falx seed, pumpkin seed, etc). Now I need to see that one. They are 5 and 8 :) I am heading to the hardware store to buy lumber to build another hutch to house our spare cages. Unfortunately they are all 21-24" deep and so I want to make a 2 level with separator like you did for top level waste to roll out the back and make the lower level deeper. I bought a lot of cages from someone with a lots of odds and ends so want to make use but increase space for new mamas and babies below (since we have less than a month from our due dates). Sorry to ramble but it is fun to share our new family journey too. I had 50 Netherlands and 2 boys showing them almost 20 years ago but with my youngest kiddos they never got to experience. Round 2 :) Also, I need to get the tea recipe (and the mix if you have a hardcopy). Thanks.

    @@tshultzpt sounds like you have a fun journey ahead of you! 😊 the seed mix and tea that I give my rabbits are completely optional, but I enjoy giving them supplements like that! You can usually buy the tea at any health food store. The brand is “Traditional Medicinals” and it’s just raspberry leaf tea, caffeine free with nothing added. Many people opt for feeding the actual raspberry leaves they have instead of giving tea. I hope to to that if we ever have raspberry bushes!

Maybe that's why she pulls more fur than the others too. Just an idea😊

    Love this vid, I’m watching a few of them again to make sure I’m ordering everything I need without forgetting anything. (Could be a good idea for a video for those new to rabbits). A few questions, Is there a reason you chose wood over metal nesting boxes? Did you make them or buy? I’m trying to determine the right size nesting box. I’ve found two I like, one being 10.3 x 18 x 9, the other is 11 x 20 x 10 and I’m trying to figure out if I should go with the larger or smaller. From what I understand, it shouldn’t be much bigger than the rabbit themselves plus room for bedding. Also have you noticed healthier kits or a more quick time to weight in your Silver Fox X Cream mixes? Also for the KW Cages, did you go with the standard flooring or upgrade? Thanks again for the great videos! They’ve been very helpful. I think my original plan for the 3 cage set up has jumped to 6 potential cages, so that way when I inevitably love it I won’t have to build another hutch right away and can just order more cages.

  • @TealStoneHomestead

    @TealStoneHomestead

    Hi Alexis! There's not really a reason I chose wood over metal. I just had plywood to spare and made these with what I had :) Wood is a bit more insulating, but harder to clean. Since this video, I swapped out 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth on the bottom of the boxes for 1/4" x 1/4". Bedding doesn't fall out as easily and I don't need a piece of wood in the bottom anymore, but pee still drains out. My boxes are 10" wide, 20" long, and 10" high. An extra inch of room definitely wouldn't hurt. I only did two litters of Silver Fox x Creme crosses, and both times, my purebred silver foxes outgrew them! In my experience, cremes are rather slow growing, but it could be my particular line. I'm working on purebred cremes now, trying to improve them and get those weights up. I never noticed a health difference, but there is such thing as hybrid vigor! For KW Cages, I upgraded all of my floors to HD 14 gauge. I would do it over again! LOVE the sturdy floors. Your plan sounds like a good one! :)

    @@TealStoneHomestead thanks so much for the reply. One other thing I thought of that seems people have a lot of opinions on. Do you process shortly after weaning? I’m planning to do a rabbit tractor but in winter will I need extra cages for them when I wean after 8 weeks or do you just process right around then and keep with mom until then.

  • @TealStoneHomestead

    @@Alexis_9339 Nowadays I usually keep mom with the babies until they're 8 weeks old (unless I need to rebreed the mom sooner). I don't typically process the babies until around 12 weeks. I have two rabbits tractors that are 3ft x 6ft and the litters have a lot of room in them :)
