I like that you started with the output transistors, then to the amplifier board power and on to the lower voltage power regulators. This is a good approach for all amplifiers and you're instructions could apply to almost any modern amplifier. Good job.

You did an excellent job of explaining your procedure for troubleshooting. This seems to be a very common problem with all models of Denon AV Receivers.

Thank you so much for posting this. I ran into this same model with the exact same problem. I measured all the output transistors expecting to find a shorted one and/or burned up blown amp, but everything looked perfect and I just drew a blank on where to go next. I should have thought of this and figured it out myself. I remember my electronics instructors in 1984-85 and my trainer at my first job of servicing home audio/video equipment saying "always check your power supply first" Garbage in-garbage out. Without proper power supply voltages, nothing will function as it should. I still do a lot of TV work, but it's probably been 30 years since I serviced a stereo receiver. I'll have to go back to basics and remember the fundamentals of troubleshooting next time I run into a similar problem. Thanks for the refresher course. Also, I would highly recommend using desoldering braid when removing the old component and clearing out the holes. What you did worked on a cheap single-sided board, but without solder wick or a solder sucker, you'd never get the holes open on a 2-sided or multi-layer board with plating in the holes.

I got a similar problem with my AVR-1909. Both 15V and -15V regulators (KIA7815API, KIA7915PI) seem to got damaged. I also had a exploded diode caused though a power surge. Your video helped a lot in locating the error.

Well, I'd typed a rather long (perhaps too long) comment thanking norcal715 for his very good, informative video & just as I was typing the last few or so words, something happened causing it to go to a previous page. The result, all I'd typed was gone. I guess that'll teach me not to be so long fingered. Anyway, thank you norcal715 for the ''very good & informative'' video on how 1 should diagnose a problem in a piece of electronic equipment to narrow down & find the defective, problem causing component. As an electronic tech. for around 40 years. I've got to say, your techniques & procedures are very good. Thanks again, keep up the good work & take care.

I subscribed, I've watched several of your videos. This one hit home because I started to work on an old Integra DTR 7.7 AVR I had. It was originally working but I discovered it definitely had a bad surround channel and went into protect mode. It definitely has bad output transistors and what I believe to be a bad voltage regulator. This video came up on auto-play you tube as I was wondering if what I thought was wrong was in fact wrong. I confirmed the output transistors out of circuit and believe I'm getting a short on the voltage regulator. This appears to be exactly what happened to the receiver in your video!!!! I will use some of your testing techniques "at my own risk" of course to get a more exact answer as you have. Thanks for the great videos!!!! I'm smarter from watching them. I'm a new norcal715 fanboy!!! cheers!!!

A big thanks. My AVR788 had exactly this problem, and despite my abysmal soldering skills, i got it fixed. Struggled mightily with the desoldering, but got that done as well. Very useful. One useful tip when removing the regulator. An option is to clip the three leads close to the faulty regulator body and then remove then one by one using a soldering iron from the top side. The advantage of this approach is that the soldering iron tip is not applied directly to the solder pad on the underside of the board as sometimes this can cause damage, particularly with single-sided low cost PCBs like this one.....

Thank You, I have a Denon 2311CI and had the red blinking light and the stereo shutting off problem after it got very hot because i used it on a very hot day and poorly ventilated room, i thought it could be the same problem as in your video, but i disconnected the high current power supply cables that go to a connector next to the two big capacitors (red and yellow wires) and just powered it up with the low current cables that run the display and front controls, and it didn't shut off, so this let me do the factory reset procedure and everything looked good. So i thought that there must be a bad regulator in the power supply. I turned it of and reconnected the high current cables and just for the heck of it, i turned it on again and this time it turned on and worked perfectly (i suspect that the power from the high current cables was somehow not letting the system do a full reset...) i haven't seen a video on this model (2311CI ) addressing the problem, so i hope this also works for someone else.

Terrific video for DIY sound engineers, which I am not. Thx for sharing such thorough info. A question. I have a Denon DRA-800H RECEIVER (2020). Unbenounced to me, due to ignorance, the Receiver has 2 speaker connections, A and B. I connect a pair of Elac bookshelf speakers to each. Then, i paralleled connected to the B speakers, another pair of Fluance bookshelf speakers. They sounded fantastic playing in unison with the Elacs. Elacs are 8 ohm rated, with nominal 6 ohms, the Fluances specs indicated 8 ohm rating. After playing both A and B (6 speakers ), at about 60 to 65 out if 98 volume, the Receiver flashed red and shut down. I consulted the Denon manual, it revealed it was the Receivers internal protection system shutting it down due to overheating or potential damage. I plugged the Receiver into a separate electrical outlet from the other equipment, which seemed to help and thst condition didnt occur again. But, touching the Receiver, it is pretty warm. I also try playing only the B (paralleled 2 pairs of speakers), and that too doesnt trigger the shutdown. I found a speaker switch that has an impedance protection circuit built in ( Niles, OSC or Monoprice). Would this do the trick to protect the Receiver?

Great video has inspired me to try fixing my denon 1906. I've managed to remove the main board, and want to replace regulators 7805, 7815 and 7905. Problem is there are large capactors (or something) blocking access so my question is... should I try removing the capacaitors to get at the screws... or instead should I loosen and remove the heatsinks to which the regulators are screwed... and then attach the repacement regulators to the heatsink, before relocating the combination back into the board, and soldering?

I am working on a Pioneer looks totally different inside. Plug it up and it's dead. So I opened it up and found the fuse blown. So I put a new one in and turned it on. Blew it out. At any rate I got to checking around and found a dark spot on one of the boards. Looks like something got hot. I found a transistor C2705 somewhat crispy. I checked it and I know it's bad. Also there looks to be a very small resistor red with a black ring around it, not sure if it is a resistor but some what toasty. Thanks for the video I know now about how much grease to use. Denon uses overkill output transistors. The most common cause of Blinking Red Light of Death on Denon gear is a missing power supply. Usually, one of the linear regulators e.g., 7805, 7905, 7815, 7915, etc. The second most common cause is cold solder joints on the output board.

I do have subwofer that was hooked up to it and i noticed that the RCA jack was bent and broken in one are from being pushed up against the wall.... Went through your diagnostics and one of the power transistors ( 2SB1560) power trans. was shorted across the C and E. Hi there norcal715. I have picked up a denon AVR-889 with the same red ring of death problem. I've traced everything to the (very similar) power board that you are showing. I get similar readings at the transistors so I think those are fine. The power board has the similar pins but slightly different. The +15V readout is 1.4V so that seems part of the issue as you mentioned, the -15V reads -14.7V. I get the following readings for the pins to the regulators 7915 in reads -24.6V, 7815 in reads +24.9 so is it safe to assume both those are bad regulators? The 7905 in reads -10.6V and the 7805 in reads +9.7V s I think those may be ok. The 78R09in reads +19.0V. Is that one ok as well or should that be replaced as well. How did you determine 25V on the input pin and 0V on the output pin at around 9:35 of your video. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again for the very informative video.

It seems like Denon has dropped a bit in reliability since they merged with Marantz. Until recently it was rare for a fairly new Denon to fail - now I see them all the time. Hopefully they get a grip on their parts weakness, as it's getting harder and harder to find a receiver brand to recommend. I removed Onkyo from my list long ago - way too many problems.

Very nice to follow, good detail, and steady cam. Would love to see you fixing other amplifiers
Great video. Sound and image are very clear. And your way of explaining things is fantastic
thank you!!!!! ONE... of the best Video tutorial I've ever seen. very clear ( voice and video) and explained so well. thank you for sharing this Video. THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!!
AVR- 58000 just went out today. Went into protect mode. Already have in the shop. It is indeed a beast and I don't want no new one! The service guy says these older units a much easier to work on than the new ones!
Thanks for the part about short cq in the main tranistors. Thanks to that I repaired a AVR1306 and even another amp!! Never knew that, much oblige :-)
I'm a new norcal715 fanboy!!! cheers!!!
Great job! It demands a lot of knowhow to prevent electronic waste though and you have it. Keep going to do good work :).
@NorCal715 Hi.Many thanks for uploading these very insightful tutorials.I successfully repaired 2 of my denon amps watching your vids. Please upload more vids on similar amp repairs. Thanks a million!🙂
Just found the 7915 reg. in a Denon AVR-1509 to be bad, Thanks for sharing this video.
Great step by step troubleshooting video. I really enjoyed it. May start repairing receivers.
A big thanks. My AVR788 had exactly this problem, and despite my abysmal soldering skills, i got it fixed. Struggled mightily with the desoldering, but got that done as well. I don't know why, but after i replaced the old 7815 ( a KIA product) with the new one (the newest version from Texas Instruments), a previously present very annoying low hum was gone. Can't explain that but i don't care . Thanks again

Thanks for taking the time to post this
Will use the video as a suggested viewing tutorial for the morons at my local repair depot. My Denon ARV 3312 would got into "protect" mode after a longer period of time at home. Of course the problem didn't reproduce it's self on their bench when I took it in 2 years ago. Now the Denon kills it's self after a few seconds. Your video was really well done...steady camera and good narration.
thanks for the great tutorial! I will start my troubleshooting process now.
Amazing !! Good job, and so fast you found the error. Thumbs up.
Amazing videos, very simple to follow and well explained!
Very well done. Your troubleshooting process is clear and logical. As my preference, I would like to use a solder sucker for desoldering purposes. Stan.

@@norcal715 Thanks for your response Norcal715. I didnt mean to be critical. I have a Sony STR DB-840 that shows Ptotertor, but clears up when power recycled to it. Do you have a video on this unit? Thanks.
Duuude!!!!. You are a life saver. You just save my AVR 1803. Thanks.
It's refreshing to have someone who is actually knowledgeable in the field to learn from rather than 20 yahoos who are only good at blowing smoke up ass.
Thanks, I have 2 Denon units like this. Hopefully this will help me get them back up and running.
VERY well done bro! Only thing I would have done differently would be clean the flux off. Other than that, Very well done and great explainations...

Thx man you saved me a lot of money o appreciate
Excellent tutorial.
Thankyou for helping keep these out of landfills! Have been through your process and learnt a lot. In my case however the VR was fine, have +15 & -15v, factory test point is within few millivolt, and the transistor collectors have -50 & +50v. Yet still have the flashing light problem. (a+b reset didnt work). What electrical component can I check next if all these look ok?
Great video, thanks!!
Thank you, very interesting!
GREAT VIDEO !!! THANKYOU !!!
I had the same problem in a Denon DRA297 and KIA7915 regulator was wrong , greetings from Ecuador
your great....appreciate it very much
First of all, great videos! Glad I found your channel.Do you have any denon knobs you would part with? I need all three for my AVR-1609 but preferably the volume and source select. Thanks and keep up the great tutorials.
Great Video; you make understanding electronic circuts and their functions easier. Here is my tip: Use a wooden toothpick to clean out the solder from the mounting hole.
This was fun to watch
good explanation dude... keep it up...
Nice quick deduction.
Great video! I have a denon avr-887 and the right bank of speaker outputs doesn't work on the A or B side. Both left sides work. I will check the transistors as you showed, but can you think of anything else I should check? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for all you tips. Hoping u can lead me in the right direction. I have a denon Denon AVR-2112CI 7.1. the front panel display is not right it has random stuff on.*.*.* but main power button is solid green. Hope u can help
As far as parts goes which brand or brands would be recommend for replacements.
You are awesome
I like to sand the legs or leads of replacement components before I insert them in the board. You get better solder flow without the crusty oxide layer that's invariably there on unsanded legs.
I have a avr 1709 and this power board seems to be pretty similar and I have 12 volt on the 15 volt line . the amp runs for a few minutes an plays music but the the protect kicks in. do you think its the same problem?
Fantastic.
My Denon AVR-889 on highest volume go to protected mode, is this usual? Do you recommend it over Yamaha RX-V473 ?
Did you adust the idle current? The service manual for my Onkyo AVR 7.1 ch says 4mV in on the schematic, while 10mV is advised iin the adjacent comment. Wouldn't 4mV be too low? The highs sound somewhat grainy. Would appreciate your opinion
Denon uses overkill output transistors. The most common cause of Blinking Red Light of Death on Denon gear is a missing power supply. Usually, one of the linear regulators e.g., 7805, 7905, 7815, 7915, etc. The second most common cause is cold solder joints on the output board.

Thanks For your Sharing
Thank you .
I just got the 887 that has the same problem, the Surround back part of the amp board is the issue, the 2 Output transistors are shorted (and removed) and if i dont plug that part in, the reciever works just fine. But if i plug that in, it goes into protect just like this one does. I'm thinking if i replace those 2 it should work again?
Nice job
This was incredible - thanks so much!
Great job, I need help fixing my adcom gfr 700 receiver. It powered on but no sounds come out.
Lovely video, very informative, I have a marantz 1602 , there is a strange scratching sound inside when powered up also have audio but it not very clean sound coming through, any ideas as to what the problem could be, thanks.
I WONDER IF YOU COULD HELP ME OUT? I own one of these and the unit seems to operate normally for a while. After it has been on for about 15 minutes or so the left main channel produces a pulsing in the speakers. It stops when the unit cools. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
have you ever had any questions about the Denon AVR-790. That's what i have and it is shutting down and stand bye is flashing red. I have this issue with the speakers hooked up and unhooked from the receiver. I don't think it is a heat sink issue because now with the speacker disconnected it shuts off within 5 to 10 seconds of being turned on. I do have subwofer that was hooked up to it and i noticed that the RCA jack was bent and broken in one are from being pushed up against the wall.... I'm not 100% sure but could this have shorted and burnt something else out? Please help John Russell from Cincinnati.
Hi. My friend, I have a question. My 1910 doesn't power on the display and enter in protected mode after 7 sec. The center channel had a short, I replaced the capacitor in short but the receiver doesn't power on. The 7812 and 7912 are in good condition. Any idea of the problem? Tks a lot. PS. Sorry for my english, I know, is very bad.
hey, i have a question about my surround sound. two of the resistors and transistors are clearly bad. how ever next to the resistors is a normal resistor that appears to have blown. i can still read the value of it but its chard, my question is do you think i should replace the all three resistors and the two transistors or do you think this unit may be junk. side note there is a blown fuse but when its plugged in and you hit the power button it will still trip a relay but nothing else happens. its a pioneer vsx 604s
Thanks for the great explanation and soldering techniques. Same problem with my Denon AVR-E300. Went through your diagnostics and one of the power transistors ( 2SB1560) power trans. was shorted across the C and E. Do you need to replace these in pairs, the other PT, as well as the bias T, seems fine? (2SB1560/2SD2390). Emitter and base resistors were blown as well.
@norcal715
4 жыл бұрын
I certainly would replace them in pairs, also if the base drive resistors are blown I would replace the driver transistors also.
On another unit, Denon AVR-889 I'm having a different problem. The board is considerably different than the 788. When I check IC801 and IC803 (both voltage regulators 7815) I'm getting voltage readings of 43V in and 27.9V out. Would this be the problem and should I replace both? I replaced one of the transistors (one of the D2560's) as it was blown and thought that was the main problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hi, I have Demon 5700 that works good until it gets hot then the sound goes to very low level. I take the cover off and use wooden stick to tab some boards and the sound comes back. I couldn't really locate the single board that cause the problem cause they are all connected and to the chassis so the vibration from my tabbing probably affect them all. Can you give me some points as what to do next? I have access to solder station and doing ok with soldering. Thanks
Hey Norcal. I have the same problem with my denon avr1709. I was wondering if you knew of any reputable places in the north bay area (Sonoma County) or even you if your close enough and not busy. any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
@NorCal My denon avr 716 suddenly went quiet. No sound.Opened up and checked,no obvious sign of anything wrong. No shutdown and no dc output at the speaker terminals. No shorts on the output transisitors either. The 15v and 5v regulators are fine. Measured the outputs and am getting 51v at the collectors but no voltage on the emitters.Seem to be missing the 24v.What could be the problem?
tanx u so much
Ever work on Onkyo? I just picked up a Tx-NR709 and it has the HDMI infamous "no sound" issue. Also "No speaker indicator" problem on the display. Faulty HDMI boards were a problem i guess. Its under recall and is being fixed by Onkyo as we speak. They paid for shipping and even sent me a box! Can't wait to get it back and hook it up!!. Ever work with these issues? btw, I subscribed!
Good video
So, I have a 787 that has the same symptoms. Interested in doing the repair. Not sure what the shipping would cost but I would love to get it repaired and there is just not a local repairman that I would trust.
Hello, i have a similar problem with my denon 1908, except that mine doesnt send out the -15 volt from the supply board? U have any clue about what it is?
I have a denon arvr -x1600h and it had a blinking light at first but now it gets no light at all. Would it possible to apply this workflow to figuring out what it could be? I suspect lightning or over voltage due to power flash. advice?
Hello great report many thanks. I have something similar but the protection mode appear after long running time...(2 to 3 hrs) I have checked as described and find out that at 25°C (cold conditions just after switch on) the 7815 regulator is delivering a voltage closed to 12,5V --> I checked the specification and it should be min 14,4V. Do you think that it could be the root cause ? Regards Did's
Also i only mention there is huge radiator and the IC ,shut be a stronger 78S15 with hawe 3A current output.

I have Pioneer VSX921, suddenly notices there is not audio from SBR and SR channel; I checked that there is audio at relay PIN. Other channels are working fine. could it be a problem with relay? any logic that is not turning relay on. Thanks in advance
Did you ever use that nice copper solder "wick" ?
I have a DENON AVR1803 the right and left speakers are working as per normal the only thing now is if its other Sound Field features selected like Jazz, Pop, ProLogic and etc are not working. its service manual is not so clear in this matter...Need help some guide lines....
Hi I have an avrs760 with the light of death on just wondering were you located and how much you charge to work on them
It seems like Denon has dropped a bit in reliability since they merged with Marantz. Until recently it was rare for a fairly new Denon to fail - now I see them all the time. Hopefully they get a grip on their parts weakness, as it's getting harder and harder to find a receiver brand to recommend. I removed Onkyo from my list long ago - way too many problems.

Squall Leonhart I was being kind. I have one of those late model POS Denons that throws a red light fit when it feels like it. Regulators check / measure fine. Pioneer builds a much more reliable receiver - heck, Sherwood builds a much more reliable receiver. Honestly the Sanyo "Studio Standard by Fisher" was worlds higher quality.. and I am not joking.
I have Denon AVR 785 model. Problem is "No Sound" All voltages are ok. Do you have any idea of No Sound problem ?

I have a AVR-788 with a odd problem, in stereo mode i can turn up the volume and all is good, in Surround Sound mode if i turn vol past 11 unit go's into shut down and if I quickly switch mode back to stereo it will be ok again. Note this will happen with no speakers attached Bias test at speakers connectors all under 15mv but for front right is -22mv don't know if that's enough to be a problem , my -/+ 15 Volt line is 14.6 unit stays running all day in stereo mode. any idea's ? Fantastic video by the way !
I have same problem with my TX-SR606. Have checked the resistors driving the output transistors. They are not open.
