Hi splchina! Please note that you will get just a power amplifier with no pre-amp. You might need a pre-amplifier with quite high voltage output to be able to max out the power amp. Good luck!

Correct, the external input connectors (EXT IN: FR and FL) are connected directly to the power amplifier. No signal processing will be applied.

Yea that makes it pure direct so you have proper timbre tonal awesomeness .

I own an model 2307 with the same issue. I was listenting to music using this setup - TV -> SPDIF -> AVR and suddenly stopped and started making a noice like a beep at 1-2Hz interval. Now it works on radio (i'll check the spdif input again to see if it works) ok but when i toggle using function potentiometer between inputs and get back to radio, sound dissapear and moreover the volume level cannot be modified, it looks like it's locked .I reset it several times but without any succes then i found your video. Is it worth repairing in an Denon authorized service?

Hi, Catalin N! It sounds like there is something wrong in the digital control circuits and it might need to be reprogrammed after a repair. If that is the case you will probably have to take it to an authorized service. The second hand market value of these units does not seem to be that high, so it´s possible that repair cost will come close to or even exceed the market value. I do not know Denons service policies for their older units, so it is hard to say with certainty whether or not it will be worth it financially. If I am to make a guess, I would say that in the best case scenario you will be paying for a new control board + 1-2 hours of work for installation and possibly reprogramming, which might result in a total cost below the market value. If new control boards are not readily available the repair cost will probably increase significantly. I would recommend that you ask for a price estimate from an authorized repair shop. They might not be able to give you an exact price but you will probably get an idea of whether or not you think it will be worth it.

My Denon AVR 3801 has a very similar problem. It always worked perfectly, but after moving it to my new house, the problem started. Most of the times I get sound when I switch it on, but after changing a setting (like input source) and setting it back to cd, there's no sound. The same problem as you describe in your video. Sometimes however it works as it should. I can switch settings and it keeps playing. Then after a few minutes the sound just falls away and nothing comes out of it, although the knobs and display keep working. So it looks like sort of an intermittend problem. Because it stopped working after I moved it, I keep thinking it could be a connector that came loose, or another thing that might have happend when I moved the receiver. I tried to unplug and replug all the internal connectors between boards, but that did not solve the problem. Would a bad Eprom or dsp chip cause an intermittend problem like this? Sounds unlikely to me, but I'm not an expert.

Hi pbruelemans! From the behavior you describe, it sounds very much like a problem with the digital controls. The EPROM failure might start out with just a few corrupted memory cells, and depending on the initial conditions at start up, it might be able to run a working block of code until something is changed and it tries to access some of the corrupt memory cells. It is a bit harder to explain why it comes and goes, but given that the EPROM seem to be a common point of failure on these units, and the bahavior matches it closely, I would assume that this is the case for your unit as well.
