Denon AVR-2105 Repair - no display or output

Ғылым және технология

This Denon AVR-2105 was a repair for a family member after 10 years of use. It was a fairly simple issue this time but demonstrates a couple of useful diagnostic techniques.
After the repair I did blow out the dust with a compressed air line - normally I would do this up front but the thrill of the chase (and the terrible weather!) meant I dived straight in :)

Dave you did what many don't. You cut the cable tie flush. Auto electricians and others leave them a little long but you can get cuts on fingers if one pushes past. I have a Denon AVR2113 with a blown HRC fuse. Better as a mirror now like your one. Unfortunately a 400v line had fallen onto the 230v feed to the house where it is used. The amp was on standby and several 1N4007 diodes on the SMPS PCB were taken out. Once replaced the amp is functional again. The HRC fuse saved the day as there are many 80 pin ICs in the unit. Thanks again.

They leave a little incase the tie slips a position, so it doesnt go entirely loose. Cuts on fingers is not a real issue at all.

Nice video. Could you possibly point me in the right direction for the following problem: I have a Denon X4200W, it no longer outputs any video or sound. All the other functions seem to be working fine. I can hear the relays clicking for the main power, relays clicking when plugging in headphones. I can connect to it over the network and change settings, see that I'm playing music through bluetooth, etc. I tried to find someone with the same problem and maybe find a solution that way but I was unable to. Any idea where this problem could be coming from and where to start looking. Greatly appreciated for any suggestions.

@Eclectronics greetings from Sweden! Your video is the closest I have come to understa d what is wrong with my Denon AVR-1905. It worked in the morning, but after a faulty toaster caused the Residual Current Circuit Breaker to cut the power at lunchtime, the receiver din't work in the evening - I guess these to events could be linked. The unit does not start up at all. No lights/display, no sound and no startup-buzz. Totally dead - but the fuse is ok! Any ideas how to go forward? Or is it fried? Thanks for a great channel, I've learned a lot! 👍

Hi Enmanuel , that sounds like an interesting fault! I don’t have a definite answer but it could be a dried out capacitor causing the issue. Very hard for me to make a suggestion but perhaps you could apply a heat gun or hair dryer to some areas inside and see if you can locate an area that affects the bad sound. Then check capacitors in that area. Good luck!

Hello, thought I would take a chance here. I have the Denon AVR-587 very similar on the inside. in my case doesn't even turn on, I don't hear any relays clicking and then I tried to connect a table lamp to the back panel power AC outlet, so nothing so power isn't flowing even to the near by AC outlet on the back. So clearly not getting passed the very first few inches of circuit from the AC cord. I checked for broken solder joints and even the first relay, the two fuses. So frustrated.

What I liked is the eventual repair. What I didn't like was the ugly modification. As a owner I would be greatly upset if this would be done without my advance permission. I always seek as original as possible in all repairs. Sure, the rectifier was of a higher value but, still.

Glad you enjoyed it. In this case the unit was from a family member who was going to throw it away. I knew that he would not care about a new bolt head on the rear panel! I could have sourced a black one to help disguise it but speed was more important in this case. Thanks for the comment.

Hi, Interesting stuff you do... I am a bit like this but.. I have a 24 year old Denon D-UTF88 system in mint condition, but I think I have inadvertently damaged the system inter-connect function. This probably whilst trying to replug it to make all the units respond to the handset.. The cables are 3.5mm stereo-like connectors which allow the handset, via the main amp, to control the tuner, CD and cassette. This no longer works, it did!, so suspect it may be blown transistors on the outputs. I have the full Circuit diagrams for each part, and there appear to be a NPN/PNP pair, plus one, on the outputs.. Do you have any knowledge of this as to what the fault may be. I am tempted to try a repair but dont want to proceed without some idea of what it is.. In all other ways the system is working fine, well, aster replacing both the CD and cassette rubber drive belts which had 'relaxed' too much! Cheers Paddy

Mathias Oen it sounds like either your unit has the same issue or there has been a failure of one of the power amp output transistors. You can test for these exactly as I did in the video. Look for any readings that are less than a few ohms, check the bridge rectifier and power transistors. Good luck!

Very nice troubleshooting video. I have a Denon AVR 1802 that stays on Standby and does not power up. I tried factory reset holding Spkr A+B and plugged in the AC power, the display flashed, and then the LEDs stayed on for Spkr A, B, Auto, PCM, DTS, Digital, and dts; it still does not power up. During display flashed, some clicking sound were heard. I measured the rectifiers on the board, and both have ~ 0.5V values. Is there something else I need to do? Thank you.

Protect mode can be caused by many different faults but the typical ones are (1) DC voltage rail out of spec (2) power amplifier outputting DC voltage (3) power transistor shorted in power amp. (3) can be checked with a multimeter on the diode check or low ohms ranges. (2) can be checked by connecting the multimeter (on voltage range) to each amp channel in turn (before output relays) and powering up; Any sustained DC voltage indicates a fault. (1) sounds like you already checked, but without a service manual it’s difficult to know you have tested all the internal rails.

if you run it over an Isolation transformer, which is not needed it has a transformer of its own so it is Galvanicly separated, but if you really want isolation ok, but then Ground it and defeat that isolation really makes no sense to me . The reason you use Isolation in the first place is so that when you hook up Oscilosciope that you dont make a Ground loop with phase when you check phase , or something , when you ground it you practically defeat that and back to square one it is . So i dont understand why do it .
