Demopolis Lock Whirlpools!: The Return!
The first video: bit.ly/UFJ2U1
Video of Demopolis Lock filling it's chamber with water so a boat can be locked going upstream. These whirlpools are formed on the river that runs near Demopolis, Alabama. These are NOT naturally occurring whirlpools and instead occur because large pipes under the water suck water into the area behind me (not seen in video until I turn to walk off the bridge/platform area, it's the place to the left) and fill it with water so boats can easily navigate the river without having to load/unload boats onto higher/lower areas all the time.
I wanted to record the entirety of this video because I never knew what a whirlpool looked like when it was forming. Honestly, I think that's the most interesting part - not the fact that they are A) So big B) TWO of them and C) THEY ARE SPINNING OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. :D
This video is meant for educational purposes. Teachers: Go ahead, use it in class. I know I've already had a couple of my high school teachers want to show it in class and I gave them the go ahead. I'd prefer if people not to reproduce this video content unless they are making an educational video in which this is being used as an example.

Whirlpools are amazing and terrifying at the same time.
be great to see this area fully drained during maintenance so we can see the size and location of the pipes......

They do periodic cleanings - I'm not sure when they happen, however.
3:15 is when it starts forming if your impatient like me. You’ll thank me later...
The physics of this is beautiful. Conservation of angular momentum in a fluid. Man, if the water were clear enough and there were a way to *safely* film this under water, that would be a sight to see!
That would be absolutely horrifying to be dragged into, great video though!
The first person to see a whirlpool was probably like WHAT THE FUCK TED GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE THERES A SPINNING FUCKING HOLE IN THE SEE COME NOW

well put it this way, you ever seen the whirlpools when you drain your tub? if so you would realize the top of the whirlpool is much wider then the bottom, and it all corresponds to the height. If those 2 are 6ft across at their widest and the bottom is 18ft below, then the pipes are probably only a foot or 2 in diameter, which means in less then 5 seconds you would be sucked down and jammed into the pipes with the pressure of all that water trying to push you through...
Very cool video. It is amazing how the water makes some very solid looking shapes in the wave at the top of the whirlpool extends out over the vortex. I'm having a hard time explaining what i mean.

you mean when the white water comes out of the whirlpool? that looks cool i agree
Interesting place. What would the pipe entrances look like if the entire system was drained?
Notice they are going opposite directions. I ran an experiment with round funnel bottom 100-gallon tanks, filling them, and letting them settle then releasing the bottom plug, they went both directions. 50/50.
Whirlpools scare me.....

Har Har i know it does but is great to have a whirlpool
Epic whirlpool
So what I am hearing is there is 18 ft of water above those pipes that are sucking the water into them? Gosh those are some powerful pipes. That is so freaky.
Imagine falling Into that thing..

Beautiful...
It's like one huge ass Pool Drain going god mode
the amount of pressure from the water.
Yup, it actually gets bonuses when people try to use things like that.

Berry Cannon, what is the safety protocol if someone fell into the draw down side once the pipe was opened?? All rivers and cannals normally have life preserve ring's at a point to throw in to save life.

Honestly...I'm not sure. I remember I was required to wear a life vest at all times. If you fall into the water when the lock isn't in action, there are ladders inside and on the walls/lock itself to help you climb out. If the lock is in action, I would imagine throwing in a life preserver, rope, or anything to help pull the person out of the current would be the course of action. Jumping in to help was NOT the answer.
Put a romote control boat in there
so those are holes that sucks the water? so if you fall in , no one would can rescue you ? omg thats very dangerous
AMAZINH BERRY!
Why isn't there a grate directly over the pipe itself Do ships pass over that same area when it's still and that's why they can't put one?
how do you die if you fall in by the pressure ripping your body, drowning and why cant people be saved from the whirlpool

yes, the pressure from the water would likely force a person through the metal bars that cover the beginning of the pipe, extruder style. they're there to prevent large debris being sucked in and blocking the pipe but they spell certain death for any human.
So where was this shot at it looks like Ashland city Tennessee
I do not understand one here. As these eddies are formed? And for what?
you need to film from a drone......get right down there.....

OH MY GOD!!!!
Imagine if all that water were fabric
even If I use juggernaut combined with ressurectpotion?
plz explain what happens if you go in there with a submarine suit on
It's like a black hole forming
thank you concerned citizen lol
2 whirlpools goodness
I'm scared
Drone footage would be great
Dude. Dude. You're holding the camera portrait style. You should've shot this landscape... just tilt your phone 90 degrees.

Interesting subject. Pity this video was recorded in portrait mode which limits view to a narrow vertical. This is not natural. Far better and natural to record in landscape mode instead where more area and more detail is shown. Next time try rotating cell phone 90 degrees. This will record video in landscape.

at the beginning of the pipe there are usually metal bars to stop large debris being pulled in, anyone sucked into the whirlpool would likely get pinned up against the bars and drown, or the force of the water could be so great it forces them through the holes between the bars like an extruder.

The currents in there will crush your bones and tear flesh off you :) nice way to die huh?
One thumb up for attempting to show some interesting natural effects with explanation. Another thumb down for thinking that phone is suitable as a camera. At least turn the dang thing sideways.
This video has awkward dimensions.
