INSANE *TWIN* WHIRLPOOLS!!!

Ғылым және технология

On the same day as the Lennox Head Tornado event, I stumbled upon these twin whirlpools in a heavily flooded paddock. They were big, fast and intense!

You are spot on. Two drains run underneath a road and are both about 40cm in diameter. The water is about 5 - 6 feet deep and anyone getting caught in there wouldn't come out again. The water would pull them through a barbed-wire fence and into the drains. Someone with adult-sized shoulders would be stuck and drowned in one of the drain pipes.

nice example of when a second vortex is nearby the other one will contra-rotate. (spin the opposite direction) this happens to less than 1% of all tornado systems, this little vid is a good insight to the forces that allow it to spin the other way.

What is so odd also about the double whirlpools is the fact that one has a clockwise rotation while the other one has a counterclockwise rotation to it.

Defies well known Coreolis Effect of fixed water rotation direction below the equator. ALL of Australia is below the equator so this should not happen, but is happening.

the puzzling thing is that we are told that in the northern hemisphere whirlpools always spin in a clockwise fashion. IT is evident that two whirlpools spinning in the same direction can not exist near each other so that at some point in their formation one was stronger than the other and forced it to be in the reverse direction.

@TheGleeVids I thought it was interesting because I remember back in school we were taught that toilets in Australia spin the other direction like typhoons which spin counter-clockwise. This shows that toilets can spin either direction and so Typhoons must have some other forces acting other than the Coriolis Force on it than water. Water probably doesn't act on that effect explaining why it spins any way it wants (probably depending on how it drains).

up at our farm there is a constant whirlpool next to the concrete bridge we have across a creek, its simply water being sucked under the bridge and into a pipe so the bridge dosnt act like a dam and it lets water pass under

One started and set the direction of flow before the second began. That close together, they couldn't rotate against each other. The first one set the dynamics, the direction of river flow supported it...and away it went...wheeeeeeee.

I noticed that one whirlpool flows in a counterclockwise direction while the other is flowing in a clockwise direction. All in the southern hemisphere. I guess the Coriolis effect is not always the rule of flow on a oblate sphere rotating from east to west.

+David Bowman Even though the coriolis effect is stated to affect the rotation of whirlpools, the effect is small in comparison to other factors that affect the direction of rotation.

@vikkiandbradley07 Very interesting and thanks for the explanation about the elongated left whirlpool. It's sort of mesmerising to watch. Fancy finding this phenomenon in the middle of a field somewhere near Lennox! Actually I shouldn't be so surprised because there are so many natural wonders there but this one looks quite dangerous. I wonder if it feeds some underground lake or cave. Maybe a hole that gets filled up with water then suddenly one day when it's dry the earth gives way?... Hairy!

The 2 whirlpools rotate in opposite directions, one clockwise the other anti so they draw anything between them like two vertical rollers and squeeze it and spit it out or one of the two swallows it. There are 2 such reported in the Illiad written by Homer, which were the bane of seamen in antiquity. One was named Charybdis the other Scylla. If you tried too hard to avoid one, you fell into the other.

@astronemesis50 I'd assume a whirlpool would spring counter clock wise in OZ, but same whirlpool would spring clockwise if located in say North America. Right? But side by side like that; weird. Is it because they're side by side, that one rotates in one direction, the other in an opposite way?
