For Chlorine, I found that the red carnation is the state flower for Ohio (where Tyler and Josh are from). I thought that was interesting... Also, some think that the line "Sippin' on straight Chlorine" is a secret message from Clancy. "S.O.S. -Cl"

In Tear In My Heart MV, Jenna grabs Tyler’s throat and lifts him in the air. Also “she’s the tear in my heart, take me higher,” and “Im so high, my jumpsuit takes me so high” could Jenna be Tyler’s metaphorical jumpsuit?

Another important topic the group Nicolas Bourbaki covered is topology. Topology is about how objects, when they morph into other objects still keep all their basic properties. So maybe another thing Nico tells Tyler is that no matter how much he changes as a person (morphing to someone else), he will still be the broken person that he is and will never get better. So in a way, he is also mocking Tyler’s efforts to get better with the help of his music, which is actually supposed to be Tyler’s main motivation to make music in the first place. Pretty cruel, and that’s how Nico is described by Clancy in the letters. So basically, Nice might be trying to take Tyler’s motivation to make music away, which also fits with the bridge in Jumpsuit.

from a religious POV this is my theory: ever since reading the interview where tyler says that trench is the closest to entertaining a world without a God i’ve realized some things. Tyler (in trench,in this point of his life) is depending on banditos and friends and family and the people around him. They are helping him get out of DEMA too. but we see a loop in this album and in the music videos- Tyler keeps getting pulled back into DEMA (into doubt, depression, etc.). Maybe Tyler is realizing through this that he needs his jumpsuit, he needs God and that God is the only one who can pull him out fully. As christians, we go through a lot of struggles with faith, and personally i relate to Tyler on that level because i do too a lot. (no one seems to talk about it in churches though, so that’s why i lean to Tyler) but anyways- i think when tyler says “i’ve used up all i’ve collected” - he’s saying he’s used every defense mechanism, he’s prayed, he feels as if he’s tried everything, so maybe he came up with trench (came up with a world he created) to feel control and to see what it would be like without a God (like he says in the interview). He’s trying something new. something dangerous- something worth thinking about. It’s really made me think. (idk if that made sense- there’s so much to say)

I haven’t read the interview yet, so I may be off base, but for me, I see DEMA as an archetype of traditional Westernized Christianity [with a marginalized God]... and Tyler/Clancy’s escape w/ the banditos as those who have awakened to find themselves on the inside of a hollow, controlling, and cold system, resistant to rogue chatter. I generalize there, but let that generalization largely cover the obvious extreme stereotypes. In this analogy, the banditos may still be believers in Jesus... just on their journey to reconcile the words and example He sets, contrasted with the sometimes harsh political, divisive, and selfish Trench we find ourselves in. Again, examples to the extreme (but not really). As the Church, we have done so much damage to the name Christian, that it may never recover. So, I find myself joining an ever-growing number of souls, seeking to simply Follow Jesus. And to be less trapped by a tarnished name, in a Sunday system. I see myself in Clancy’s struggle. Watching the bishops cling to an aging church concept in the form of a heat-less neon light they’ve fashioned. As a believer, I see the Church in a state of flux and in need of a paradigm shift; although unsure what that looks like... I’m compelled to believe it will be lit with the warm, crackling glow of Torchlight. Sadly, the world has discerned the flaw in our armor long before we had the strength to admit it. Or, the unraveled stitching of our Jumpsuit, as it were. We need Spirit-led unity. Sahlo Folina

Tyler is right. Nicolas Bourbaki took their name from Nico who Tyler refers to as someone named Charles-Denis Bourbaki. Nicolas Bourbaki group were named after a French General who was pretty good at his job until in 1871, he lost 63000 soldiers in the battle. Rather than surrendering himself, he tried to commit suicide. Mysteriously the gun flattened against his head as if it was an iron plate. Anyways the group did get their name from him and he tried to commit suicide because he couldn't handle the embarrassment (Sort of same story with their name as well) And that is how Tyler is right. Nicolas Bourbaki got their name from nico.

Posting my TOP maladaptive daydreaming disorder theory here because many TOP fans might see it and tell me what they think Twenty One Pilots theory Alright, I know in a little late to the party but 12:00 thinking when supposed to do homework thoughts, and theory vids are fresh in my mind, ya know those kinds of thoughts. Anyway, I have a theory obviously about the beautiful duo of Tyler and Josh aka Twenty One Pilots, and I theorize that Dema is the world created by Tyler as a result of the mental disorder Maladaptive Daydreaming. Bold statement considering the disorder is recently coined as such, but lemme explain sweet summer child. Now I have personal knowledge of Maladaptive daydreaming because I have it. DISCLAIMER; I am basing this off of personal experiences I am not saying MD is the same for everyone and please do not use the examples in this explanation to diagnose yourself. This is the link to common asked questions about MD I used for evidence www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/maladaptive-daydreaming#outlook Ill bullet symptoms and things I do personally I think relate ill explain how this ties together the best I can further down Symptoms extremely vivid daydreams with their own characters, settings, plots, and other detailed, story-like features daydreams triggered by real-life events difficulty completing everyday tasks difficulty sleeping at night an overwhelming desire to continue daydreaming performing repetitive movements while daydreaming making facial expressions while daydreaming whispering and talking while daydreaming Personal experiences I think relate Strong ties to music (duh) Aids creativity in things like choreography, art, songwriting (pet cheetah) Use events in daydreams to work out inner problems ( questioning religion or fear of never getting out of a bad place) Uses it to escape reality but also glorify the things and people who make reality better ( Jenna and Josh are saviors to him in this world through the Banditos) Multiple versions of self or parts of self-personified (Blurryface and Clancy) Knowledge in the back of the mind that one day this will stop (leave the city) Inner turmoil has graphic visual imagery ( grab my throat and break my hands in jumpsuit) Having an elaborate and complex timeline in order to merge old daydreams with more recent ones ( blurryface strongly motivating trench) Past historical knowledge regarding events or people have impacted the world my characters live in ( Oh come on NICOLAS BOURBAKI) I have created an entire religion in the past that my characters believe in which in a way condemns their actions because they don’t follow my real life beliefs ( Vialism even though Christian) Have multiple what-if scenarios play in my head for mental preparedness Characters have a word that has little significance but means a lot to them for me the word is Overpass (Sahlo Folina) How this ties together TOP essentially has taken a long time to seamlessly connect blurryface to trench (some theories even go as far as heathens and No Phun Intended) similar to how an MDer holds on to a personal attachment to characters and past time. But it would not surprise me if this entire thing was planned In my mind I have an alternative me (her names Cealestis). Like how Tyler has an alternative him in the form of Clancy In the song Morph Tyler sings, If I keep moving they won’t know ( if I keep fueling these dreams people wont know I’m struggling) What they throw at me’s too slow ( this problem isn’t resolving fast enough so ill work it out in my mind) Ill morph to someone else ( ill become this other me (Clancy) to help face my problems) Im just a ghost ( im observing my problems but a different person is fixing them) A defense mechanism mode (This disorder helps me with problems and protects me) 3) THE F-ING OUTRO TO BANDITO I created this world to feel some control ( this could not be more obvious) Destroy it if I want so I sing Sahlo Folina (i can leave and destroy this daydream at any time but my connection to it keeps me there and Sahlo Folina is the decision to keep Dema a thing) Feel free to add more to this but its just a theory that would be amazing if it was true

Buy a jumpsuit, learn how to levitate, morph to someone else, put a band-aid over a cut on my lip so my blood can stay with me, sip on straight chlorine, get beaten to smithereens, paint a gravestone neon, get hyped to see Nico and the Niners, become a bandito, find a pet cheetah, become a legend in my own eyes, and leave the city. When Tyler says that he created Dema and that he can destroy it if he wants, he can’t really do that, it will always be apart of him now. The fact that he wants us to make our own fan fictions about it(which I happen to be making one) basically solidifies the fact that it cannot be distorted, if you give an idea too much power, the idea grows so strong that it cannot be deleted.

Tbh, I though that with Dema they also meant a city where everyone's in a state of depression, and you either get out by beating your depression (and if you beat depression you usually don't go back, at least not willingly) or you die/take your own life and are therefore unable to go back to your depression/Dema. Also he might be scared to leave Dema because even though it's bad, it's also the only thing he knows, and since he doesn't know what's outside of the city, it might feel safer to stay and know what's going on than to leave and not know what's out there waiting for you.

It seems to me that this story they created is inspired in the song "Sound of Silence". For example, the silence itself is a very important theme of both stories, these neon graves the bishops make seems to be a reference to "the neon god they made" in Sound of Silence, the message of both stories seems to be very similar: disturb the silence, say what you feel and what you think...

Nico and the Niners, aside from the references you mentioned, also helps connect Heathens to Dema as Nico and Niners basically outlines the prison break from Heathens. That also is why he says we'll win but not everyone will get out. At the end of Heathens video, all the prisoners are gone, except Tyler.

Could ‘rebel red’ mean yellow? Red is often associated with violence and rebellion but red is shown to be the bishops colour. The banditos can’t use red as their colour as it represents the bishops and the blurryface era, despite it being the obvious rebel colour. The banditos chose yellow as their colour as the bishops ‘can’t see yellow’ among other reasons. We see the yellow flowers in all of the trench music videos and in Nico and the Niners we see Tyler put a yellow flower in his pocket. The phase ‘rebel red’ could be a reference to the yellow flowers as it is their adopted ‘red’.

It's an interesting thought, making My Blood Tyler talking to a younger version of himself. In Bandito he could be saying that he had done the high road before and knows the outcome so he's going low now. Anyways, I don't know if it checks out because of Clancy's letters... Because in that case the religious references haven’t fully left The absence of a Christ figure didn’t actually throw out the biblical references Tyler uses, he just got better at disguising them. If I were to roughly translate what “East is up” from “Tyler language” to plain English, factoring in that Trench involved Tyler contemplating a world without God, perhaps it means “Believe in something, so that you keep going and don’t return to the city.” Most directly, it’s “Believe in the other side of Trench,” but for us, it’s got a very similar message to Car Radio, and the fact that Neon Gravestones are the end result of Vialism corroborates this. Vialism would be believing in death as the only answer, and the Banditos refuse that lesson and choose to run for their lives, to run to stay alive, and to believe there is a reason to stay alive, and this time Tyler’s extended a hand to also say “Stay alive no matter what that reason is. If you don’t believe in God, like Trench is a godless world, believe in something and run, and you’ll have lived a better life in Trench than you would have in Dema.” In that case, Leave The City gets a second meaning about the inevitable death you have anyway, but not because you ended your own life. He says, quite importantly, in Trench he’s not alone. It’s death at an old age, surrounded by loved ones. The struggle with faith Tyler mentioned means he’s still looking to believe in something so he can make it there. He wants the reason he’s tired of tending to fire to be his own body giving out. He mostly separated this album from his faith, in order to get us to listen, saying “okay, maybe there really isn’t an end to Trench, but you LIVED there.” He keeps on going back to the city, which for him means contemplating just that, to save more people from the neon gravestones, and THAT IS WHY CUT MY LIP IS TYLERS FAVORITE SONG ON THE ALBUM. One day, maybe, he’ll stay in his Trench and stop coming back to the city. But for now he’ll just stay alive and help more people to run. Which is another meaning to Leave The City. Some of this post is probably wrong but some of this seems like it’s the right direction.

Im just now delving into the depths here but some things Im considering from the outside looking i. that i feel may have been overlooked are: 1. Maybe Dema is set in the future. May be the cause for the Clancy reference as the Clancy games were set in the future as well. 2. An anagram for Nico is Coin. Maybe money is his weakness or biggest temptation. Also Dema is Made. Maybe coming from being "Made" isn't all its cut out to be. 3. Maybe when Nico tells him he's a copy hes referring to him being a clone or a twin. Which would help with his "Prestige" act and is where the 3rd would come from or maybe even all twenty one... But who's driving the plane?

really great video! totally disagree about leave the city tho. i think he’s saying that he has been trying and trying to get out of dema (escape his demons, depression, etc) but that he doesn’t have enough energy for that right now. Leaving the city means recovery, not death. In time he will recover, but for now he just needs to focus everything he has on staying alive. I think “they know that it’s almost over” is they know that whatever they’re struggling with is almost over. I think it’s a song about perseverance and hope. :)

I also always thought that "leave the city" meant dying, I guess because I thought the alternative is "for now I will stay alive" (so it's dying vs. staying alive). But your interpretation makes 100% sense to me. One day I will have the energy to get out, but for now I just have enough energy to hold on and stay alive. Thank you 🙂❤

my take on "in time I will leave the city, for now I will stay alive" is about how he is currently unwilling to escape his situation, perhaps because he finds comfort in it as it as what he has known for a while now. tyler knows he has the ability to escape and join the banditos but he also knows it is a big risk- one that puts everything he's built up to in jeopardy, regardless of whether what he is living right now is dangerous, the lesser option. i think tyler is afraid of the uncertainty of life outside the city. afraid of what freedom could mean for him. so he will stay living, albeit in worse conditions, in the city. perhaps in time he will find that he is strong enough for change. but he will remain in the city until that day.

Leave the city is so sad. I could tell that there was some stuff about losing faith in Trench, but I never really thought that was the idea behind leave the city. It's interesting though, how Tyler talks about destroying the world if he wants (and destroying dema in that sense) but I think that has interesting implications with Leave the city if you are right about the meaning behind that song, where leaving the city means dying. Like he says in Morph, the "when" of dying scares him, so he can destroy this Godless world he's created if he wants to, but in the end he will have no choice but to find out.

He's calling out god to "Come down, come down" "I know I shouldn't say this But a curse from you is all that I would need right now, man" Here I think he's basically denouncing God Overthinking? Listen to the rap of N&TN while watching the Heathens music video. It relates completely. There was a video by the channel Nalbis on it. There are many examples of this and shows how far back they had planned this. Here are a couple of the obvious ones. "Force a sponsor" Forcing the Heathens - Suicide Squad sponsorship, it was not the most successful movie, and the sponsorship was forced. "And start a concert, a complete diversion. Start a mob and you can be quite certain." This is when Tyler brings all the prisoners into the room and starts playing music, he's created a diversion, and all the prisoners [likely of Dema] are there with him. There's a huge mob there. "We'll win, but not everyone will get out" By the end, all the prisoners are gone, except for Tyler. He also has Josh with him acting as the last shred of hope, one last Bandito. During the end of the song, we see some similarity to Trench as well. "Why'd you come, you knew you should have stayed (It's blasphemy) I tried to warn you just to stay away And now they're outside ready to bust It looks like you might be one of us" You should not have fallen to Dema, I warned you. It's blasphemy, you're losing faith, and will to live. Blasphemy is shown like this in several other songs (Blasphemy, Kitchen Sink etc.) Now they're outside ready to bust, looks like you might be one of use. The bishops are outside ready to claim you, you're one of us now, you'll suffer through Dema, but we'll help you as a bandito. We'll make it through, together. This idea is also explored in My Blood, "Stay with me, you don't need to run", "I'll go with you", "If you need anyone.". Hope this helped you a little more!

I want to suggest this, as a Chinese Rmb the 'East is up' pitchfork symbol (屮) used in the Trench era? According to a book I recently read about Chinese radicals, 屮 actually means the upward growth of plants. The idea of East is Up could be related to the fact that sun rises from the east. And plants grow towards the sunlight. If Tyler and Josh (or the Banditos) are heading towards the east, that could mean they are chasing after the sun(the brighter side of life), especially when the idea of heading towards the sun is suggested in Taxi Cab, 'We're driving towards the morning sun'. Well, I could be wrong, so feel free to correct me.

I like the Dema story and your analyse. I would like to share a little bit of my point of view for a slightly different twist. First, I believe there are several references to God throughout these songs that you do not mention. Also, It seems from all the mirrored themes and events that the Dema story is a Parallel to Earth, our existence, and current state of metamorphosis which many are experiencing as individuals and collectively The Dema "Sagas" are a sort of mythologicalized version of what is actually going on. Awesome; giving Joseph an outlet as well as contributing to the Awakening of the collective consciousness while individually leading the way as a positive role model without putting himself in danger. He teaches us the importance of thinking for ourselves and questioning authority, while being relatable and showing us his weakness and the struggle. He leads by example by sharing his wrestle with God, & with himself to find deeper meaning , understanding and discipline. His Art gives us almost prophetic reflections in code, of our political and spiritual dilemmas, state, climate and situations. Thanks for the Great Video. also, fyi, Dema or Adema, is use in England as a SLANG for "Don't let anyone find out or else (paraphrased)." Roger Waters was on Fox talking to Tucker Carlson about Julian Assange and mentions it. Also, Adema has an interesting and parallel meaning in the ancient scriptures too. Makes me wonder if all 3 meanings aren't from the same original root? Thanks for the great video! Thanks TYLER JOSEPH and JOSH, and families!

I thought leave the city was about leaving the city of dema? I also thought that the fire represented the music because once tyler runs out of music to put out the bishops might come and get him or that the fire that represents him fighting and he is tired of fighting. There is more of a theory on this from the user named: nalbis i think he goes down more and into the core of the songs from the album.

Very well explained! You have a way of breaking deep lyrics down and simplifying them in an easy-to-understand way! :D However, two things... 1. Towards the end you say that "leaving the city" is most likely referencing death...how so? You don't elaborate that any more, but if DEMA represents being trapped in a bad state of mental health, whether that be anxiety, depression, doubt, etc., then how would escaping from it be death? Unless you're inferring that the only way to escape DEMA is to die, which most likely isn't true, since we see numbers of Banditos roaming the wilderness...unless they all get capture in time? Either way, I feel like that wasn't explained enough. 2. Is it "pet cheetah, pet cheetah," (

Good question on Leave the City, I'm a quite puzzled by that as well. To me the phrase "why no one ever comes back with details from beyond" sounds like a clear reference to death, but the rest of the album has been saying to leave the city and head East. Seems a little contradictory?

About Leave the City, I personally thought that with Dema they also meant a city where everyone's in a state of depression, and you either get out by beating your depression (and if you beat depression you usually don't go back, at least not willingly) or you die/take your own life and are therefore unable to go back to your depression/Dema. Also he might be scared to leave Dema because even though it's bad, it's also the only thing he knows, and since he doesn't know what's outside of the city, it might feel safer to stay and know what's going on than to leave and not know what's out there waiting for you. Yes, he's in Trench now, but I'm getting the feeling that he hasn't escaped Dema just yet, if that makes sense? Like, he could still fall back or maybe be captured by the Bishops and be led/forced back to Dema without knowing what's life outside of Dema/depression is like. He's trying to leave but leaving is also hard, it takes a lot of fighting and running and if he can hold on long enough he'll be free from the city but he's also getting tired of fighting: "I'm tired Of tending to this fire I've used up all I've collected" In the end, he'll leave, either by gathering strength and making it out, or if he isn't able to escape, by dying. But for now, he's gonna stay alive and stay where everything is familiar. "In time, I will leave the city For now, I will stay alive"

  • @SongTheory

    @SongTheory

@@elvencorpse I think DEMA does represent a bad state of mental health, which could be many different things for different people. Tyler said that for him personally, this record was about doubt, and it can be inferred that since he's a Christian, doubt is what he's trying to escape from, thus making DEMA a state of doubt for him. He's always said that he wants his music to be able to mean different things to different people though, and he's said that Trench in a broad sense is about being in between two places. As for the rest about him not necessarily being free from DEMA, I definitely agree with that. Leave the City drops you off in a spot where he could either have escaped for the last time, or be sent right back into the cycle again. That's what Cut My Lip illustrates through conflicting lines like "But I'll keep moving" and "I keep on going back."

Although Tyler states that The band name came from a movie where bad parts were put into planes that killed 21 pilots. But apart from that I think like all things TØP there is a possible second meaning. Although it is controversial and not allways considered correct some studies from the early 20th century found that the weight of a soul is 21 grams and obviously that’s the same number as the band. My idea is that the 21 pilots are the 21 pilots piloting each gram of our soul. Idk just a theory, anybody else think the same?

Also I have three theories for Nico relating to Stressed Out At first, when TOP posted about the bishops names it was NIGO, with a G instead of a C 1. "WheN I GOt" older would match Nigo to Stressed Out the same way it matches the other Bishops to their songs. 2. my Name Is blurryfaCe and i care what yOu think N I C O this could also be a possibility but it differs from the names of the other Bishops, because the letters don't follow up and might be far-fetched. 3. Nico is Blurryface (or Nico is Tyler's Blurryface to be exact) dmaorg.info site contained the text U N STILL I DONT C KNOW O HIS N REAL I NAME C DO O U? If you clear out the letters that are too much, so to say, that leaves: "U still don't know his real name, do u?" "He" being Blurryface, and the name being again (U N STILL I DONT C KNOW O HIS N REAL I NAME C DO O U?) N I C O N I C O Meaning Nico is Blurryface, thus relating him to Stressed Out.
