I think it's specifically a corporate franchise mindset. They see that you have already bought the product and have continued buying the product, thinking that therefore you'll continue buying the product. You see it whenever an IP is purchased by a larger company and existing customer/fans are seen as a given rather as a something that needs to be continuously nurtured and fostered. It's a drug dealers mindset, they think that you have to keep buying because they are the only ones who can provide your "fix".

The hard part of hearing all this is the very real possibility that Hasbro will just shrug their shoulders and say "well I guess D&D just isn't profitable then" rather than anyone at the top change course and basically end most support for the game. I don't think Hasbro can afford to lose D&D, they are having problems with many parts of their business and WotC is one of the few that are bringing money (or at least were), so the only way they abandon it would be selling it.
Their rival Paizo just announced they are funding a system agnostic OGL called the Open RPG Creative (ORC) license that will be created with the writers of the original OGL and with input from any company that wants to work under it. It will be impossible to revoke.They are going to make sure no company that makes RPGs owns the license itself and thus none of the companies that made it will have power over it. Including them. There honestly doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the OGL 1.0a license itself. It isn't as if Wizards was able to stop Pathfinder from being 3.75e after they went GSL for 4e. Wizards putting into OGL 1.1 that 1.0a is not authorized shouldn't really mean much to folks who aren't planning on moving to 6e. If Wizards wants to throw a frivolous lawsuit, the wording of the license doesn't matter. They can just put out ORC2 with the wording that ORC1 isn't applicable. If we are pretending that Wizards can override one version of a license, nothing says that they couldn't do it again. Frivolous lawsuits can be thrown on anything.

@arock6858

Bet that the mf that’s tryna catch the “snitch” was that one hall monster in school
I think one of the other things that wizards of the Coast fails to realize is that if they think that they’re going to get tenfold new D&D players into the hobby to replace all the people who are currently playing, they’re forgetting that somebody has to teach those people how to play. While DND 5E is easier to learn than some previous additions, it’s still fairly challenging to step into. What’s more, becoming a dungeon master can be intimidating for a lot of folks. The way that new dungeon Masters have been created is by learning from others who are willing to teach people how it works. And being a dungeon master requires a lot of homework outside of actually playing the game. When most people think about playing games at home, they aren’t thinking about doing homework in order to do it. Therefore, the only way that I can see wizards of the Coast being able to expand the audience in the way that the OGL 1.1 would require them to greatly simplify how Dungeons & Dragons works. Since they aren’t doing that, I don’t think they realize how much they need the current community to advocate to new players to get more people buying their products. That said, if they go video games and movies, then the need for the current community becomes less. However, the unfortunate truth is that while more and more people are enjoying dungeons and dragons, it is still the situation that the vast majority of people look down on tabletop RPG‘s. It’s too much work, it’s too nerdy, there’s a lot of math. All of those things are anathema to a large majority of the population. And so the idea that wizards of the Coast think that they can afford to lose their current community is very shortsighted. The bottom line is that wizards of the coast needs the current community to continue to grow this hobby if they intend for it to be essentially the same game moving forward.
@smokedbeefandcheese4144
Жыл бұрын
I think everything you said is correct but I would add. They have been having a hard time getting new dungeon Masters for a while. Because they simply don’t put out enough introductory material for new DM‘s. They are simply too focused on selling books for the players to make their characters more powerful. Which simply requires more work on the DM‘s part to create balanced encounters. Which a lot of new DM‘s somewhat struggle with especially when the challenge rating system is essentially useless. And only sits there to confuse new DM‘s with some thing that doesn’t even work. And then you have the stuff that they have been putting out for their settings and other stuff which hasn’t been that great anyway. Everyone had a problem with spell jammer and it was either the lore or it was the mechanics that made you mad. It was either the racist scrotum monkeys. Or the fact that they had no spaceship combat rules in their spaceship game.

@@smokedbeefandcheese4144 All good points, and arguments for using other systems. It also occurs to me: all bets are off if WotC decides they can somehow make a usable AI GM. If you get like 75% of the experience with an automated GM that can interpret language and knows all the rules, then maybe they won't have to care. That said, I've tried Chat GP, and it's got a long way to go. I would guess it will be at least a decade before that sort of thing would actually work. But... I could definitely see how not having to find a GM to play would make the game more accessible.

WotC's biggest mistake here was their refusal to accept that while they may own the D&D brand and make D&D products, they are NOT D&D. If their offices went into immediate shutdown and ceased all production of all D&D content indefinitely tomorrow, that wouldn't stop ANYONE from continuing to play. And they need to be made keenly aware of this, to know their role, and learn their place. This is the time, to tell WotC, "WE are the ones in control here, not you. Continue to make the game, provide the players with content, and we will continue to give you money. But stop trying to turn everything associated with it into a revenue stream. If you do this again, we're gonna smack you!"

Just take the Assassins Creed Franchise, Ubisoft is putting that stuff out since almost 15 years now. Every 1,5 year a new titel. Its allways basically the same and the feedback of the wide arrange of fans is allways mediocre to just bad, because the devs just dont care for what the fans think. The same goes with CoD, Battlefield, FIFA and most other big names. There will be allways those millions of boons which will buy every crap no matter how shitty it is what the gaming industry puts out. That phenomenon was especially painful with Blizzard during the last 5 years... and yet, Diablo 4 gets hyped again, just because the material we saw so far wasnt 102% crap from the get go... Diablo 3 earned a shit ton of critique because of the ingame store... but still, hundrets of Lets Playes croped up on YT, everyone played it, and everyone was angry at the same time. Sorry, but this is not a problem, which was exclusively created by the devs and CEOs, we, the community have a big part in this development. And yes, I throw the video game community and TTRPG in one pott here, because the crossover is very huge. I bought my last AAA titel back in 2014 and got burned, because it was so shit... since then, small and indy it is for me, especially so in terms of D&D, because the homebrew stuff you imagine at home with friends is almost allways just better than the stuff you can buy officially...

I will go even further and advocate for the use of wikkdot's d&d page to make charater from now on. They have every official character option available for us to people for free. Don't but their products at all, and make sheets using PDF's. Make them suffer in this war they started with their community.

Hey there! There are lots of places to start with TTRPGs, and I think the biggest deciding factor is what people around you are already playing. If there's a gaming group around you, see if you can hop in! If you're going to be starting out on your own, it's all about what you can convince your friends to play. If you want to play D&D like they did in the 80s, or how they do in Stranger Things, maybe look in to Old School Essentials. If you are more into 5e and the stuff you see in Critical Role, try Patherfinder (they have a discount going on right now!) Or 13th Age. If your friends are gamers, you might be able to win them over with Fantasy AGE (based on the Dragon Age RPG) or the Pillars of Eternity RPG. There's lots of stuff out there, but the thing to keep in mind is that the real game is what you and your friends do at your table. Don't be afraid to houserule, to make your own campaigns, to make the game you bought serve you and your table.

Just a friendly reminder that Hasbro could be the main instigator of this too (and is more likely, as they are the parent company to WotC). And they have to consistently do so, regardless of people getting "tired of hearing about it". We saw what happens otherwise in the world of video games. I remember back when predatory monetary practices in mobile gaming was becoming very commonplace, and people were furious initially but then got used to it and would defend these practices against "proper gamers" who would sneer at them for playing these sorts of games. Then these practices gradually started seeping into modern AAA gaming and at first people were again furious but over time the anger died down. Sometimes they would push things too far but they regrouped and often repackaged them later to better success or it became a way for their _slightly_ less slimy monetisation methods to seem palatable by comparison. Now we have a scenario where consumers will not just accept but often vehemently defend practices they would have looked down their nose at about 15 years ago, and get exasperated at people who still rail against them as just being whiners who can't accept this new status quo (which, fair, cos I can't and won't). If D&D players and influencers don't continue to rail against this stuff (and make a real commitment to migrate to different systems if things continue to get worse), it risks going the same way. Maybe it won't get as bad as the video game industry, given TTRPG's more niche audience, but I do think it is a concern.

DnD is not owned by some guy that spent time and effort to make a cool game story system. Honestly the DnD community should do what OPR did to Warhammer, when the price of buying the starter kit for Warhammer got to be as expensive as a 3d printer and fans got fed up with bloated rules books that take over 25 minutes just to read and even longer to figure out. OPR came by and made Grimdark Future, or "totally not 40k" and simplified the rules down to a simple system you can fit on a single page and use for multiple different wargames. The DnD community should take inspiration from this try creating a simple set of basic rules for tabletop RPG (maybe not fitting all of character creation and classes into a single page level of simple) and how to balance gear then make an open source game that people can expand freely. I mean if Straight to VHS can be learned in like 10 minutes and only uses free rules pdf's, paper and like a handful of D6's I think the minds behind some of the better custom classes and expansions could make a ruleset that puts the official Wizards one to shame.

Paizos a God damn legend! He doesn't care about the money, he cares about the memories and the fun times people have when they get to sit together with friends and kick butt together. I really hope that DnD will continue to thrive through Pathfinder if it all goes to shit

I haven't bought a single D&D product since WotC bought D&D. Not interested in their products. I would be perfectly happy to continue using AD&D 2ed.

@@abbeybelanger8118 I think Paizo may identify as female...only slightly joking because the founder and long time CEO of Paizo is Lisa Stevens.
Just my 2c, but why are major gaming companies been making anti- customer decisions like this in the last 5 years. Xbox trying to stop selling games between players and moving to a rental-only model, blizzard making a big deal about a phone game 'sequal' to Diablo, and now pen and paper IP game company thinking they are Disney and laying the legal groundwork to sue anyone who 'copies' their IP.

Welcome to capitalism.
WotC reported, in 2019 (pre-pandemic), 50 million players WORLD WIDE and 13.5 million ACTIVE ddb accounts. People really need to understand the numbers they are looking at.
"Greed makes man blind and foolish, and leads him an easy prey for destruction "
I think it's beyond short sighted for the leaders at WotC and Hasbro to look solely at DDB for monetization numbers, especially when they've only owned it for 6 months and there's been known complaints and rejection to the program since you essentially had to buy your collection twice just to use them online.

It's shocking that buying the hard books only gives you a 50% discount to online resources, rather than unlocking a full digital copy. When you've just spent £30GBP on the book (or $40-50USD in some places), you don't want to have to shell out AGAIN for easy access.

@@EyebrowsGaming movies, which cost a shit load more to produce than books do, provide a free “digital copy”-that is to say permission to stream it until they decide you need to give them more money or they just don’t want to let you stream it anymore-with the physical media version. Hasbro is staffed by idiots at the C-level who pressure their subsidiary business C-levels to make idiot choices, all in the aim of maximizing shareholder value on a quarterly basis.

@@stevendorries it's not even like it's just movies, I have digital copies of Warhammer books that I got as part of buying the physical books. It's not unheard of to have digital assets with a book, and if GW can do it, how is WotC failing to reach that low of a standard?

Just checked the current license, this can not be applied retroactively to any previous products sold or created under OGL 1.0a. While there is a clause allowing for updates to be made to the OGL license, its a moot point for existing products as the release to sell was provided en-perpetuity. Existing sellers can continue to sell existing products, and while WOTC will certainly try to make them think they owe royalties, they definitely don't. This is the standard for how these sorts of licenses such as MIT work, where if you decide to move to a stricter license later you cannot forcefully grandfather in people who were operating under the old license unless it expires or specifically stated that this is an option. Their license explicitily states the opposite of that, so WOTC doesn't really stand a chance and are just hoping people will settle That said, not a lawyer and have primarily only dealt with contracts and licenses with both parties in the US. Obviously if you make $750,000 you should spend the money to get a lawyer and have them confirm or deny this.
Remember, when you cancel, everything continues to work until the next pay period, so it you're paid up for a month or year, you can cancel and still use the service while you search for/migrate to an alternative, or even if you just want to wait to see what happens with this and then expect/hope to turn it back on. One less thing to worry about when clicking that unsubscribe button.
This all puts a damper on me buying the Dragonlance book. Luckily, I did it before news of the OGL 1.1 came out, but I still feel dirty for giving them my money now. All these entertainment companies truly learned nothing from the 2000's. Piracy declined because of legal services like Netflix, and Apple Music/iTunes, and now D&D Beyond. It didn't die though. We've all just been waiting for these companies to fuck up, because we do like giving creators compensation for their work, but we hate being taken advantage of and will burn it all to the ground if we feel our kindness has been mistaken for weakness. Yo ho ho, mateys! It's time to once again set sail!
This reminds me of a Games workshop incident but the whistle blower was reported by the person that received it and it was quickly silenced.

They took TTS from us. That's all I care about. Fuck those absolute wankers.
Scandals like this remind me of one thing and one thing alone: We are to much focused on individuals rather than systems. Yes, it is not the empleyees. Yes, it is not even the managers. Guys, it is not even the CEOs. But we make it about them. In an economy where profit is the one driving factor, this is what is supposed to happen. Even if this is also a failing of individuals it is critical to note that they have only ended up in the positions they did, precisly because they are capabale of making the decisions they do make. Them being replaced achieves nothing. Someone else gets the job. If we continue until there is literaly no one left to do the dirty work... yeah what happens then? Will the good people finally get to make the good decisions? No! The good people will have to make the bad decisions. Probably it is the case already. I've read that we should be "aiming for the head" in this comment section. Truth is: there is no head. I would even argue that there is no one at guilt. Again: All this is not a bug, it's a feature! The system is aranged in a way that for us the product (in this example d&d) holds real value (not only in an esoterical way) in that we can make a real use out of it (having fun). For the other side the product holds no value other than the surplus it creates. Solutions are vast but even more unlikeley. Each and everyone of them being even less likely than the others up to the point where there are still some weirdos beliving in the marxist revolution. (do not get me wrong. If done correctly it would quite defenetly solve this problem) It seems we will have to live with this unperfect situation for the lack of an essential need to change it. But still I want to install some hope. One solution that at least applies to our situation is possible - even easy. Let us switch (role playing) systems. The (role playing) system in question must only fullfill two critera: 1. Be fun 2. Not be owned by anyone or anything The internet did lay a groundstone for a possible liberation. It was never this easy to share information. Find talented people and promote them.
