Dell G7 7790 Review - 17" RTX 2060 - Open-box deal $740...Worth it?

Ғылым және технология

In this video I'll be reviewing the Dell G7 7790, a 17" gaming laptop that I recently picked up on a good open-box price. I'll look at build quality, screen, performance and ultimately decide how much this laptop is worth. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to get you an answer.

I got my used G7 today with a 9th gen i7, rtx 2060 and 16gbs of ram, with 240 gb ssd and 1tb hdd (but with 60hz screen) for a total of $500. The market for laptops in Greece is terrible so this one was a great catch.

Not sure if this will be useful, but I got my G7 17" 2 years ago also as an open box deal. I have the i7, RTX 2070 which I upgraded to 32gb of RAM and it has worked really well for everything I've thrown at it as a student. For RAM heavy software like Maya I really noticed a difference after upgrading from 16gb to 32gb for RAM. I study 3D Animation and have left this to render for hours at times. From a long term, heavy stress perspective I would say this is definitely worth it if you are looking to find something on a budget. Once docking this to a dual monitor set up and getting the peripherals you want, it's a beast for the price and you are also able to take it places if you want. Only cons I can think of are: Heavy and hard to take to and from school Battery life is not good (yet you probably aren't getting this for that) 60hz screen on this model (but still great for most games) MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN IT OUT EVERY FEW MONTHS, if you don't clean it after long term use, dust will build up and you'll notice the fans get loud all the time. I just bought compressed air and unscrew the back every 6 months or so to just clear it all out.

Very good review that’s exactly how I feel my my laptop I got for paying double when the laptop came out lol with the Rtx 2060 but they sold out of my model so they upgraded me from Dell to a Rtx 2070UC version. The laptop is amazing and I used the gaming laptop so damn hard, that I killed the battery. Right now I am ordering a new battery. I can tell the battery is the weakest point because of it. I am sure it needs a battery that would put the laptop over 15 lbs heaviest which I wouldn’t care. I like to keep my laptop only in my dorm.

I got a used one with 300 CAD. Other than your RAM only being able to run 2667 mhz the performance is decent enough.

Yes it should work just fine. I'm using a 2TB Corsair MP510 in mine which is too thick to fit in my ultrabook but has plenty of room in the G7.

Not bad, always needs the cooler stand or it shuts down, so a cooler room than ours is recommended. Curiously, it is 32GB ram, but someone on youtube says they were able to put in 2x32 GB ram w Vengeance LPX DDR4 but has anyone else raised the ram that high on this unit? I use mine equally for light gaming and electronic music /vocal recordings using Magix, something that previous laptops didn't handle well. So this laptop brought an improvement in productivity for me. I like the choice of usb or jack input for headphones.

Thanks for this review, but I have to disagree with you about the battery... You can manage the performance of the 7790 by using the app => my dell. Go to battery, thermal and you can manage everything! I don't know who needed to read this but your welcome. You can also adjust the fan speed.

I have a G7-7790. How do I know which display I have? I don't use for gaming, got it as a warranty replacement for a laptop that Dell couldn't fix due to lack of parts. Mine has 256GB SSD M2 mvne boot drive and 1TB HDD second drive and 16GB ram. No complaints other than the trackpad is not my favorite, I suspect due to the plastics and not as stiff as it should be.

You should definitely open it up and check to make sure the fans haven't become clogged with dust. Beyond that, it sounds like there could be a software issue of some sort. A clean install of Windows would probably be my best catch-all advice, but there's a lot of less extreme troubleshooting you could go through. Also I would remove all of the Dell/Alienware preinstalled apps. I noticed mine runs way cooler in normal use, and Steve from GamersNexus noted some major performance issues causes by these apps in one of his recent videos. Good luck!

That's a common problem with this laptop. The definitive solution is to repaste. I recommend Cryonaut, I managed to reduce temperature by 20 degrees Celsius on average and got rid of throttling. There are numerous tutorials on how to do it on KZread; it's not difficult, just need the correct tools.

I found my 17" to be decent (I think that 144Hz screen should be brighter too), but the last couple of years of seen big gains for CPUs, so I probably wouldn't want to pay more than 500-600 USD for it.

I do still have it. It performs great. I've even started using it with the screen closed (with monitor) to save desk space, and it seems to run at full power even in longer gaming sessions without issues, which has impressed me. It's silent 95% of normal use since I did a clean install of Windows and didn't install any Dell stuff. Can't speak to ultimate longevity yet, but my experience with the G7 7790 has been very positive.
