Deleting the blue from blue lined inks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is my method of getting rid of the blue from a DC comic board. Again this is just how I prefer to do it.

If you end up with blue line residue which may now look gray you can easily adjust the levels or brightness/contrast to balance it out and make it disappear.

Thanks for your videos! Do you think you might teach the "Intro to Inking" online class again in the future? If you ever happen to address it, I'd love to see a bit about where you used a brush and where you used a nib. I printed out Capullo's pencils and experimented with them to see if I could figure out how to approximate certain kinds of lines or effects that I saw in your finished inks, and... well, I now have a greater appreciation for the artistry of the inker :-)

i notice when i ink that the black areas are usually uneven in value, i also see that here. is that an issue when some black sections consist of slightly different gradients of black?

Hey Jonathan, apologies if you perceived my comment as being confrontational in anyway. Yes I can read the title and understand this is one method. I just wanted to offer a suggestion to those like myself who do not ink their artwork. It was not necessarily directed at you. I am a huge fan of your work and look forward to more videos you produce in the future.

This method is decent but it doesn't work if you work with pencil scans. I prefer to delete the blue lines using channels in Photoshop. Do this by opening the artwork with the blue lines in PS. Make sure its RGB. You can change later. Go to channels >click the blue channel >hit command A (Control A on PC) > Command C (Control C on PC) This copies everything in that channel. Click back on channel labeled RGB. Then go back to your layers palette and hit Command V (Control V on PC) and Voila!

Hello Jonathan I'm posting this so comic artists coming to this video can find my method on removing blue lines... I used to ink my boards on the pencil and then erase... Then I switched to your method but couldn't get a good result (I'm using Gimp I don't have Photoshop). Tonight while I was fooling arround with the scanner I just noticed that when I scan my inked board in pure bitmap (I believe most scanners have this capability) with the black threshold set to 110, the blue is "surgically" ignored and I get a nice pure bitmap. I have an epson Workforce 7525, quite cheap A3 scanner/printer combo with which I print and scan my boards... I hope this helps further anyone inking on blue pencils.

Same thing just like Reno Msad, for me it is better to deal with channels from Ps, now I just need someone to cut my hand off and put a Glapion one-miracle-hand-inkline and that's it, everything is possible you know....
