I think they chose that version of Idina because, in a lot of instances, that’s how her voice sounds now. People say it’s because she did the role for so long but Jackie Burns has been in the same role for significantly longer than Idina and has maintained a healthy sounding voice. That video of Idina shows what it sounds like when she sings it now!

Yeah and I - as a vocal coach - disagree to the should ...closed or open vowel is just a question of taste...breath support wise the closed vowel is much easier and less hard to sustain (especially on a tired or sick day). It is less resonant BUT it is also quieter so a valid choice if you decide to not go 10 on the volume meter in the high belt area. She did open it up in a lot of performances...Willemijn that is...she can do it all. Also a tighter sound does not mean that it is automatically uncomfortable or "squeezed" in an unhealthy way...there are distinctions.

Idina isn't the best for consistency, but she's probably the best raw ACTRESS Elphaba ever had- her notes have meaning and her acting skills bring her a step beyond- so many other Elphabas come off as grumpy or too snippy, but she was perfect with the vulnerability and the attempts at disregarding others.

You are so good also Hannah, your modern singing is spot on. I have difficults on highs even though i'm a soprano...but the problem is i try to bring more chest when i am not prepared to...sometimes we are more good on head...i guess the middle voice that bring the colour of that too is a good thing to look at even in our chest i guess it's safe to always have a head point or focus so we go with easy even in bad times.
