Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood, Daredevil) joins us this week to share her process as an actor in taking pride and enjoyment in your performance, but not lingering on it after the fact and letting the opinions of others make you defensive in your next role.
This idea of other’s opinions gets expanded as Deborah shares her experience being bullied as a teenager and how the isolation and trauma still lingers with her to this day.
We also talk unfinished Marvel projects with Daredevil and the Punisher, guarding your confidence, and the legacy of True Blood.

Karen Page??? She was HATED by fans for being so entitled and judgmental. She was pure insufferable cringe in every scene she was in. Obviously not Deborah's fault, she was told to play this horrendous character, who was supposed to be disliked as she was in the comics. I mean, in the comics, she ends-up living on the street, becomes a heroin addict who does underground porn, and sleeps with Matt knowing full well she has AIDS. He character was actual trash. I love Deborah, but that character, even though diluted, was horrible.

Deborah An Woll has been an ABSOLUTE favourite of mine since True Blood. I REALLY wish she was in more stuff. She's always excellent, and appears to be a genuinely wonderful person too. Breaks my heart to hear she was bullied. As (barely) a survivor I know exactly what she means. I carry my trauma with me to this day (at 38) and I will remain broken. I wish I could spare every other person those feelings.

@@ronburgundy3172 Indeed. It's incredibly sad that you could all too easily be correct (and I'm no fan of mindless "me too" accusations. I'm just pragmatic and cynical enough to know that where there's money there are people who will exploit others for personal gain) It's *extremely* unlikely that Weinstein was the only or the last abuser in such a position. We can only hope that however imperfect the activism has been it will have a positive outcome in the long run.

You don't have to remain broken because you aren't truly broken, you *can* heal. I'm older than you and have dealt w/serious childhood and adult trauma and thought I would always just be damaged goods (cus of course there are ways the stuff in your head affects your body as well)...until i tried microdosing. I had been raised believing all substances are bad (by those who chose to drink heavily and chainsmoke like chimneys) so i was petrified - and then i actually tried it and almost couldn't stop crying the whole first experience because of the utter relief i felt - from my ptsd, debilitating anxiety, depression, just the weight of all that bullshit i had been subjected to lifted off and I felt like myself, fully, for the first time in my adult life. You don't even have to do it that often for it to be effective, it felt great for months before i even sought out more but you can also do it weekly if that's what you require. I just know that you are amazing and resilient and deserve to feel worthy *because you are* and I want you to have that knowledge firsthand. I hope you're doing well regardless and remember to always be kind to yourself 💝

It was so great to hear her talk in such a warm, open and generous way, she seems like such a sweet person, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want to hurt her - but then I guess bullies are intimidated by people who are special and shine. I want to know why she hasn’t seen it. She talks about all the people who wrote it, went up there to film it, and worked on it, etc. There were also people who busted their @$$es on post-production. Don’t you think their work should be appreciated by the actor who played the title character of the episode? I’m a little disappointed to hear she didn’t respect their work enough to even look at the finished product.

On occasion we get to hear actors shine a new light on their background with unheard stories(Kevin conroy, Wil wheaton, Robert Patrick, David Harewood). Deborah Ann Woll's story has been one of those exceptional stories that has had that effect on me. Just changing the way, we look at their acting and gaining a perspective of where it is coming from enhancing our rewatching experience. You're doing something beautiful here Michael and thank you for it. This beautiful actress was so open and genuine throughout the interview then at the end you thanked her for letting you be inside of her but not in some pervy way… Lightened the mood before saying goodbye, I had a bit of a chuckle. I needed that chuckle because her recounting the bullying she endured struck very close to home for me, I can rhyme off the names of my attackers without straining to recall. That’s perhaps one of the reasons I enjoyed Smallville so much, Clark has this amazing destiny ahead of him but he’s gotta survive high school first. Really enjoyed this episode Love Deborah, I been bullied not only in school but at home from two of my siblings. So glad my granddaughter,s school don’t tolerate it and the children are tough to be responsible to each other. School have changed so much over the decades. Not only do you feel that kind of pressure in school and from your parents, I can imagine that pressure you get in doing acting specially at a very young age. I think everyone wants to be good what they do, they should give less crap what others think just do the best you can. My children ask me one time, why I was dressed in pJ and going out like I just woke up. I told my children dose it matter I am not going out to impress anyone. I am going out to be me and feel free and get me a cup of coffee, boy did I get a lot of lookers 😂 I was were Star Wars PJ with slippers I did get asked were I got them 😁 it took me years to come out of shell after being bullied abused and dealing with pressure at work and from my EX. To care what others think and I won’t be bullied or abused again.

I have not seen True Blood, but my wife and I were huge fans of Daredevil when it first came out. Since then, we have re-watched the series at least twice. In my opinion it is still some of the best work that Marvel has done. Deborah's work in that show is outstanding, to say the least. I do remember the episode she's talking about, and it was very very good. If you happen to see this comment, please tell her that many of us really love that episode, and she was spectacular in it. I was also picked on very heavily as a kid, and it certainly does stick with you for a long time. It changes the course of your life. Listening to her talk about that stuff was difficult but also relieving, she was very brave to do this with you!

Sweet girl, hard to believe she was bullied. I think most of us were at one time. I remember being very popular in one school for years and then having to transfer to another in which I was a social pariah. I have no idea how that happened but it was rough. Fortunately I grew faster that most of the guys and got into athletics in High School which made things much better. Being a kid is tough.

You are very good in God of War Deb and it was a pleasant surprise to see you in there. Miss you as Karen page though, your character personified the idea that not all strong women kick the shit out of everyone and act like men. You bring a realistic strength to femininity that's is a great example for writers and people learning about writing or storytelling at any age.

Talking about validation from random people vs a fellow professional. . . I'm an illustrator and of course I love hearing from anyone at all that they like my work and they think I'm skilled. But when you hear it from a fellow artist, and you like their work and feel they really know what they're talking about and what it takes to do what you do, it is even more appreciated. I can't help but value those comments from those people more than random people. And a new Daredevil without Karen Paige will not be quite as good. What she did with Karen Paige was so unbelievably perfect, Marvel better call her!!! I love Deborah Ann Woll, she's such a lovely person.

She did a few episodes for Geek & Sundry (Relics & Rarities) and it opened a new world of gaming for me ^^ So... thanks :) Secondly, @Michael Rosenbaum, condolences for the loss of your colleague on Justice League, Kevin Conroy has always been and will always be Batman.

You're a good dude, Rosy. It's amazing to see these real people, whom we only really have relationships with as the characters they play, appearing relaxed in a casual situation and always glowing, open and with a big smile across their faces. I'm hooked on the podcast to the extent I've had the jingle stuck in my head for weeks.

It was great seeing Deborah Ann Woll again, and learning so much more about her. She was amazing as Karen Page, and learning the character's backstory in the third season was a gut punch, but explained so much about why Karen did what she did. I too was bullied growing up, but every experience can teach you something, if you're open to it. The most empathetic, kind, supportive people I know are often people who experienced bullying. It can really open you up to understanding and identifying with the problems of other people, and recognizing the power of even simple acts of kindness. Oh, and Michael, if you need proof that people listen all the way to the end: Yes, I think we all like to "shit in a nice room." ;)
