B. Dave Walters, Seth Green, Deborah Ann Woll, & More at the BEADLE & GRIMMS Table! | D&D Live 2021

Ойындар

Dungeon Master Jon Ciccolini and Host Bill Rehor from Beadle & Grimm's leads B. Dave Watlers, Deborah Ann Woll, Seth Green, and Xander Jeanneret on a wild journey as they play Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill! Can our heroes improvise their way through a doomed campaign to hunt a massive monster with a challenge rating the size of the moon? This session is unlikely to roll critical hits but sure to score critical laughs (unfortunately the monster has maxed comedy resistance).

G4TV, please ask Deborah Ann Woll if she would be willing to join the team for the game review portion of the show (together with Adam Sessler, especially since Morgan Webb is doing something else). She is such a talent, she plays D&D (she was great on Relics & Rarities and every other D&D session I've seen her in), and I'm sure she would get into the gaming if she isn't already.

@@riverswater5688It’s been a few years and you may have already figured this out by now, if you weren’t discouraged, but it’s not a match because not all sessions are battle sessions. Sometimes the players are just solving a mystery or a puzzle. It’s not really a win/lose thing that a match implies. This one is obviously a one-off which is why it was okay they got killed of. A DM would not generally be that viscous but they were quite likely clued in a bit. They had really low hit points. Anyway, it could have been explained in a nicer way originally.

Just in case that wasn't sarcasm: Advantage on Wisdom saves wouldn't have helped; they already mostly made their saves against the fear effect. Regaining max HP from healing (e.g. 8 instead of 1d8) wouldn't help either; they have to survive a hit for that, but Beacon of Hope doesn't reduce incoming damage. (rules-as-written, Cornelius shouldn't have been cut in half; the 15 damage was less than twice his HP, so he should just have been at 0 HP, not killed outright by massive damage. Unlike Ursus, who took 17 damage vs. his total of 7. Half-orc relentless endurance only works if you aren't killed outright.)

@@TheUpperbutt On the first watch through I will admit that I did think that this DM wasn't exactly maxed out on his CHA, but I didn't really notice the players running roughshod over him or anything. I did think that the "host" hiding by his side (and doing the intro without any lighting) was weird. After your comments I watched through it again, paying more attention. If anything, I liked the DM a bit better the second time through. All parties knew it was a throwaway short one-shot with a guaranteed TPK, and I thought they all just seemed to be having fun. At least 2 of the players are themselves accomplished DMs and the other two are both trained actors; nothing here seemed over the top wrt improv. Sure, the DM may not have been my first choice, but I'd watch another one-shot with him (ditch the weird host guy though) to give him a chance. I don't think the situation was really dire enough to warrant comment, though.

while I am stoked that G4 has made or is making a comeback, and I like Seth Green, I would rather watch campaigns with ordinary people rather than professional actors who, though quite talented, are experts at improvisation and voice work. I think this is why I can't get into stuff like Critical Role.

Great players mediocre GM. I don't understand; was it always the project to have them fight against a way more powerful monster and TPK? Was it to show that level 1 players shouldn't fight against a dragon with legendary moves? I really don't get it... Couldn't it have been other monsters?

If they dont kill em ppl wont stfu about continuing episodes. Ppl like closure. Not everyone can play a crit role campaign. This isn’t peak d&d. This is a PR campaign to sell d&d.

There was some kind of audience participation gimmick during the livestream that determined how powerful the monster they fought was going to be by showtime. The players were always going to be level 1. I think baseline for the dragon was level-appropriate at the start of the event but enough people participated in chat or donated or whatever it was to boost it up to…this.

@@silromen42 thanks for the much needed context. I guess that makes sense. I'd never let twitch decide the CR of an encounter personally, but it makes sense from a PR standpoint.

Full party wipes aren't fun unless ALL agree on it as a one off. But those aren't that engaging. And it won't sell. No one wants to die. Dumbest marketing strategy ever.

This DM isn't very good. Missed a lot of things, and the host was just weird. I only got through this because of Deborah Ann WOLL NOT WALL, and Seth Green. The objective of D&D is to tell an engaging story. If your story is only engaging because actors are carrying you, then it's the exact opposite. Also, if something LETS you hit it, you don't need to roll. A roll suggests they are actively trying to defend themselves. Should have been a critical. You said it dropped its guard. What AC would it have? It isn't defending itself. 63 damage would have hurt. Even a dragon.

With two ... TWO!!!...Dungeon Masters running this game, with ONLY 4 players to manage, and they still had the nerve to ask a player to pull double duty and voice another player's NPC follower? ...wow... That's some weak DMing.

Does anyone know the rules? Two reactions in one turn, a Kenku that doesn't use mimicry but just speaks like a normal character... This is a bad advertisement for the game 😡

Kenku PCs usually bend or break that piece of lore, so they can play. But yeah, as for being sloppy with the rules, perhaps they weren't trying because they knew it was just supposed to be an instant TPK. But yeah, half-orc Relentless Endurance only works if you aren't killed outright, and he took 17 damage vs. his max HP of 7, so that took him below -7 so he wouldn't just go to zero (and instead 1). IDK if B. Dave intentionally bent that rule for RP reasons, to do something other than what the last two players did, or if he forgot the full details. From the way he said it, I'd guess the latter. Most professional actors that play on actual-play streams didn't enjoy math class or computer programming, and really enjoy the crunch of how rules interact to make a game system. (There are exceptions, like Brennan Lee Mulligan and some of the dimension 20 players who make interesting builds, although they also tend to be pretty lax about the rules when actually playing, like limits on mastermind rogue help actions.) Cornelius, Xander's character, should have just been knocked out, at 0 HP, since he only took 15 damage against his HP of 8. -7 is less negative than -8, so he's alive at 0 HP making death saves. Same for Seth Green's paladin, surviving by a much wider margin. If there's one rule they should have familiarized themselves with for this one-shot, it's the overkill massive-damage rule. Or maybe they talked about it and agreed to not bother very much with rules? B. Dave's invoking of Relentless Endurance seemed weird to me, like he thought his character really wouldn't have died. --- As for two reactions, that back-and-forth sounded it could just be her turn again. IDK why the DM said "as a reaction"; maybe he meant "as a response" (to Lenny's words), the plain English word rather than the game term? It could actually have been a legendary action, or just her next turn. Disappointed Lenny didn't use Divine Smite. Oh, but they're level 1, and paladins don't get spell slots and smite until level 2. xD. So it was never possible for him to triple the extra 2d8 damage. And apparently only the base weapon damage was tripled, not his modifier.
